This story will have updates of both seasons in it. I will start off with soccer updates but the AFL ones shouldn't take too long either. I think I will have to use the 2004 lists because I don't have any updated ones and I can be bothered doing it.

Melbourne Victory Manager: Ernie Merrick

Richmond Coach: Terry Wallace

Other info will be posted soon.

Victory Open Season in Style
Melbourne Victory have started their 2008/09 campaign in style with a 3-1 win over Sydney at Telstra Stadium. It was Sydney who were first to break the deadlock in the 30th minute with a great strike by Patrick deflecting off Muscat and into the back of the net, 2 minutes after Theoklitos pulled off a miraculous save. Melbourne created their first real chance in the 38th minute, when an Archie Thompson strike sailed over the bar. This resulted in Sydney having a shock 1-0 lead at half time.

The second half started well for Melbourne when Hernandez volleyed a low cross into the bottom corner of the net, just five minutes into the half. The Victory continued to attack and captain Muscat capitalised, finishing off a great through ball by Allsopp and giving them the lead with twenty minutes to go. Sydney never looked like scoring from here and eventually Melbourne scored again through Allsopp, after numerous chances went wide. Sydney subbed off Patrick, Corica and Brosque in stoppage time but it was too late, and at the final whistle the scoreboard read Melbourne 3, Sydney 1. Popovic was booked in the second half for a suspect tackle on Hernandez just outside the box.

Melbourne 3 - 1 Sydney

C.Hernandez 50'

Top win for Melbourne after being 1-0 down. Brilliant second half. Looking good already, nice clean style. Great stuff kiu! :)

Yeah it was alright.

I can't decide if I should use AFL 2004, TAR, FFX or wait for Premiership Coach for the footy side of things.

What are everyone's thoughts?

I remember playing as Melbourne Victory on Football Manager 2008, so they're my favourite Australia team. Nice to see you doing well already, with your incredible attacking force. Melbourne are the best team in the league imo, and hopefully you can live up to that expectation.

Sorry I can't help with the AFL side of things, don't really know the games that well. Great start to the story though, mate. Good luck. :)

Jets Hold Off Victory
Newcastle have pulled off a fantastic win over hot favourites Melbourne Victory to move into top place on the table. The Jets held off a determined fightback from the Victory to win 3-2, despite having far less shots and possession. Newcastle came out of the blocks well and created the first few chances, before an errant pass from Vargas in defence was intercepted by Bridge, who put the ball into the top corner of the net. Seven minutes later another Vargas error cost Melbourne possession deep in defence and a good pass from Elrich allowed Denni to score the second goal in the 23rd minute. Vargas was dragged by Merrick at this point who was fed up with his poor performance. Danny Allsopp got one back in the 29th minute, creating something out of nothing and scoring from outside the box. The Victory were holding on well for the rest of the half when a great low cross came in and was finished off once again by Bridge, giving Newcastle a very handy 3-1 half time lead.

Melbourne came out and played far more attacking and confident soccer in the second half, and after 20 minutes the Jets put a much more defensive game saving plan in place. This made it hard for the Victory to create clean chances, and it wasn't until the 68th minute that they scored. Archie Thompson took possession about 15m out from the box, dribbled it in to the far side, then took on two defenders before beating the keeper in what could be a goal of the year contender. However Melbourne were unable to create any more good chances despite dominating in attack, and had to accept a disappointing 3-2 loss at the end of the match. Newcastle played a terrific first half and deserved the win, but we also saw just how good the Victory are in that second half.

Melbourne 2 - 3 Newcastle
Bridge 16'
Denni 23'

Allsopp 29'
Bridge 45'
Thompson 68'

Brilliant match, and a great writeup. You unfortunately conceded just before half time, to end a pooor half for you, no offence. A tale of two halfs really, with you being unlucky not to get another goal towards the end.

Hopefully you can go back to winning ways, maybe try a 4-4-2? Great presentation mate, good read. :)

Yeah none taken, it was a terrible half. Definitely need to change formation, 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 maybe. We'll see. Still confident we'll win the league though.

I'm thinking of changing this to just the scores, I really can't be bothered with posting match reviews etc but I still want a story :p

Also I will be using TAR for the footy side of things I think.

EDIT: I might stay with AFL 2004, in which case I would write match reviews.
