Dirk Nannes, the left-arm fast bowler, has decided to become a limited-overs specialist and has retired from the first-class game. Nannes has completed only one Sheffield Shield match for Victoria this season due to injury, but has remained a threat in the one-day and Twenty20 arena, including being part of Australia's plans.

"This decision will allow me to concentrate on 50-over and Twenty20 cricket and extend my career with Victoria and Australia," he said. "Hopefully I can continue to make a strong contribution in the shorter forms of the game for a number of seasons to come."

Its a shame to lose another speedster from the FC ranks, don't think we have any bowler that bowls around 150km/h in Shield cricket now. Right decision though as hes next to no chance of making the Test side. Some reason his OD form hasn't matched his T20 or FC form and hes probably missed the boat for the ODI side with Harris making an impact.

Why would he do that? Does he not love to play cricket? It's a weird decision really.

I think he felt he would be unnecessarily putting his body at risk.

He's come out and said he is going to focus on IPL, so good on him for that.

Exactly, what is the point of playing FC if you are never going to be a Test cricketer. Might as well save the body for limited overs which he does get to play at the highest level.

Shame really, he could have walked onto most other sides.

Nannes is one dude I think is fully justified cashing in and doing whatever he likes, australia treated him a wee bit shoddily.

However, I think what's important is for a player to maintain his body for playing cricket at the highest possible level. For some this is test cricket, but for nannes, the highest level of cricket he's going to play is international twenty20 events, so let him focus on that.

In any discipline, there is a time to expand and a time to focus on what matters most. I don't think Nannes will regret playing first class cricket just because he's never played a Test. His career with Victoria led to a career with Middlesex, that in turn led him to success in T20s, an IPL contract and further recognitions in that format.

So although he was no doubt paid well for his FC record, it doesn't take a maths whiz to work out the efficiency of cutting that form of the game loose and perhaps playing more matches as a result. It's funny, they keep saying T20 is a young man's game, but how rarely has it ever proved true?

As he has said in the press, he is 33 with a young family and his body i showing signs of not coping with 4 day cricket, doesnt take a genius to make his decision.

Yea most likely. Since before i always thought given he took up to cricket late, he probably didn't have miles in his legs like your typical 33 year od quick. So i always felt he could give a good 2-3 more years of FC cricket & probably play tests for AUS - but it seems like his body can't cope for real.

Cause his selection for Test cricket is just around the corner :sarcasm

You never know, Lee, Johnson, Siddle, Bollinger, Hilfenhaus, Clark, McKay, Harris, Hazelwood, Geeves, Laughlin, Rimmington, Hastings, Drew, Hopes, Bracken, Noffke, Dorey and Tait could all get injured. In an unrelated story, Pig's can fly and T/20's are banned.
