England win the first ODI by 185 runs
It really was a very disappointing effort by the Aussies. Australia was overwhelmed by the massive target England set and could never make up their mind to either go at the target aggressively from ball one or to approach like any other game. In the end the massive target England set syched out Australia into submission. Although the pitch wore a green look batting was easy enough and Australia have to blame themselves for having thrown away many of their wickets. Only Ponting, Gilchrist and S.Watson showed any sense out in the middle but were undone by some very good balls. For England it was an inspired captaincy with the field settings and the bowling changes. Almost all of the bowling changes paid off and Vaughan was happy to risk using spinners on a pitch like this. England true to their form played good cricket first by batting their full 50 overs, Trescothick carrying on almost to the end, aggressive bowling and excellent captaincy. The campaign for the Natwest and Ashes would not have begin any better for England.
Australia will need to rethink strategies in the upcoming game. Calling the toss right but not opting to bat may seem a tad disappointing but it was no cause for loss. Improvement in both bowling and batting department is need to come back strongly in the Natwest series. Not all is lost and for a champion team like Australia losing earlier is better to shrug off any complacency.
