Inspired by @blockerdave's thread I thought I'd do the same thing with England's Test tours of the 90s. I'll be using the "All-Time Greats Series" mode on Cricket Captain, which is quite ironic given that I'm playing through as 1990s England. My plan to play a series a fortnight or so. A few things to note:
  • My opposition will be as close to real life as possible (some players might get injured during the series where they didn't in real life).
  • I will have the freedom to deviate from the cricket-on-drugs selection policy of 1990s England.
  • Cricket Captain will only let me play one-, three- or five-Test series, so I'll change the series lengths a little bit.
  • I will probably try to put adjusted career stats together at the end.

England have picked a brave squad for this tour thst includes several uncapped players (denoted by :redo:), but insist this isn't a sign of chaos in the camp. This certainly is the start of a major rebuild around experienced players like Gooch, Smith, Gower and Botham.

If anything, the squad is a little batting-heavy, but one hopes that a seven-man pace battery can last the distance of five gruelling Tests for which England will be second-favourites

True. But it'll also be interesting to see what happens if the teams were picked as though the selectors weren't on glue

yeah but you also lose a lot of the narratives. This Windies tour was about a conscious moving on from Botham and Gower, could Lewis or Capel be the new Botham, could Stewart or Hussain show the future of English batsmanship, would Lamb blossom as an elder statesman given responsibility of vice captaincy and away from the “negative” influences of his two great mates...

Winning in Jamaica, almost winning in Trinidad, being one absurdly low ball away from a draw in Barbados, this was an unbelievable achievement with the team we had.

If you pick Botham and Gower anyway, don’t pick Capel, add Mallender and Nixon who were not even in the conversation at the time, you’re really changing the make up massively.

Hussain didn’t play again until 93, Atherton and Stewart were both in an out of the team over the early 90s. Are you just gonna pick them anyway because Atherton was better than High Morris?

It’s more “correcting the 90s” than “playing the 90s”

That is definitely true; Mallender is someone who struck me as never being in the conversation until he got picked. As for Nixon - well, we can't let Steve Rhodes play Test cricket can we?

That really depends on whether they get runs or not. I'm not going to stick with someone I like if they're averaging 12 because that wiuld be wild.

That's true, but it'll still be fairly 90s other than not being able to play more than 18 players in a series. Would it not be equally 90s if Robert Croft ended up playing 40 Tests because the selectors just refused to let Phil Tufnell bat at number nine

You’re also missing out on the failed resurrection of Wayne “Ned” Larkins...

huh ive not hear those - where can I find them?

They're in Tuffers book, I think it was Tuffers Cricket Tales (listened to the Audio book because Phil reads them himself). They basically had Ned be Tuffers room mate on the Trip where he made his debut. Talk to me about how that was a good idea...

England win the toss and choose to bat

- - -

It was a brave choice to bat first for England against quite so strong of a fast bowling attack. Gooch and Atherton did very well to see out the fiery opening spells of Marshall and Walsh without overly worrying themselves with "batting positively", but Bishop and Patterson were no respite as they took a wicket each (Atherton and Stewart) as soon as they were brought into the attack. The Judge came in at four, and was very assured against the extra pace scoring at a little under three an over and playing chancelessly. He and Gooch batted well into the afternoon session without alarm before a fantastic delivery came back in through the gate of Gooch.

That wicket really did open the floodgates. Despite the continued progress of Smith, nobody else could offer him any sort of lasting support. After Gower was dismissed for 16, nobody else made double figures. When Gus Fraser became the eighth man out, Smith had made it all the way to 99 not out, but he would scarcely face another ball. First, Tufnell fended on straight into the hands of Carlisle Best, then Devon Malcolm added insult to injury by nudging the last ball of the over and running hard. Smith had no choice but to let Malcolm keep the strike. In fairness to Malcolm, he did get back off strike immediately, but Marshall then strung together five dots to complete the over. After that, the number eleven could not survive another over of Walsh, and The Judge was left stranded one short of his century.

The West Indian batsmen did not face quite the same threat from the English bowling attack, with their big first innings built around partnerships of 88 (Haynes and Richardson), 142 (Haynes and Best), 81 (Richards and Dujon) and 56 (Dujon and Bishop). The English bowlers seemed almost entirely toothless; the task eventually fell to the part-time leg-spin of Atherton to finish off the lower order. Ultimately, the West Indies made almost 500, in a batting performance that will leave some of the English bowlers in fear of their place in the side.

Faced with the hopeless task of either overturning a 264-run deficit or batting two days for the draw, England took until the seventh over to put a run on the board in their second innings. Once they had done so, Graham Gooch looked by far the more comfortable, rolling along at four an over while Atherton looked to survive. They came close to a century partnership before Malcolm Marshall really hit his stride. Gooch carried on completely unaffected by the loss of both Atherton and Stewart (2 and 5 on debut) to breeze to a classy century from 149 balls, which was all the more remarkable when the other batsmen had combined for only 39 runs between them by that stage. His concentration was finally broken by the Day Four lunch break though, leaving Smith and Gower to hold the fort. They did not hold the fort. Gower did manage a typically pleasing 66, but aside from him the best contribution came from Phillip DeFreitas, who made a very disciplined unbeaten 44 from number eight. Phil Tufnell completed a pair.

A target of 46 to win was never going to be a challenge, and it wasn't - but at least the English resistance had forced the match into a fifth day. DeFreitas and Fraser added three wickets between them though, which should help both feel a little safer in the side going into the second Test.

England win the toss and choose to bowl

- - -

After being kicked to the kerb in the first Test, England dropped both of their debutants for the second - something that I'm sure will be a real vote of confidence for them both - and returned to Allan Lamb and Eddie Hemmings. Upon winning the toss, Graham Gooch signalled a slight change of mindset by choosing to field first. This could be seen as Gooch backing his bowlers, or it could be seen as Gooch failing to back his batsmen. In reality, it's probably just a captain wanting to try something different after his team got absolutely violated in the first Test.

Unfortunately it quickly became evident that things had not improved from the first Test. The West Indian openers breezed through the first session almost entirely untroubled. Devon Malcolm looked particularly off the boil, leaking runs at four an over. Indeed, the only England bowler to claim a wicket at all on the first day was DeFreitas, who dismissed Gordon Greenidge for 36; Desmond Haynes fell to a run-out which seemed to be the main mode of dismissal England were bowling for. There's not much to say about the West Indian innings other than pointing out that they finished the first day on 294 for two, Jeff Dujon also got a load of runs, and Angus Fraser dragged his body through 42 overs to finish with three for 94.

The English reply wasn't catastrophic, but it was punctuated by remarkably regular wickets. There would be no fifty partnership until the seventh wicket stand, which was between Jack Russell and Phillip DeFreitas. Russell would run out of partners before becoming the second batsman of the innings to record a half-century (Gooch again), and also before he was able to haul the tourists past the follow-on target. So follow on they did.

The second innings followed much the same pattern as the first, with five batsmen reaching 30 but none of them reaching 50. Curtly Ambrose, replacing Marshall presumably because it's hard to fit five fast bowlers into a team, was particularly outstanding even if the pressure he built tended to reward his bowling partners with wickets rather than himself. A late flurry of boundaries from Fraser and Malcolm did force the West Indies to bat again, but not in for more than a few overs while they knocked off their sub-30 target.

Another embarrassing performance from this England team that was meant to herald the beginning of a new era (but really hasn't). If they lose again in the next Test, then the last two games will count for very little.
