The American Heritage? Dictionary of the English Language

Just curious, but why/when did these small changes in spelling/grammar occur between the American English dictionaries?

no idea, my guess would be the changes occurred slowly over early colonial times to maybe post civil war. but thats a pure guess.

As far as my knowledge goes the US spellings are closer to the originals generally. Like Mark says it's hard to criticise...

It does make English a bitch of a language to learn. Went years being confused on the proper spelling of a lot of words. Still am to a certain extent.

Mark, you do realise I was purely winding you up? :p Amusing rant none the less.

English in itself is a collaboration of languages. Anyone who would attempt to de-value American English is just intolerant of the history of the language and the various invasions and occupations of our Island.

Yea I know you were winding me up, only problem being it actually winds me up :p

On the subject of languages I'm currently dating a German lass and she speaks really good English with barely an accent, and claims to be pretty good with Russian and French (like I know if she is or isn't :p) Anyway, I did say to her isn't English a really hard language to learn and she said it wasn't too bad, and that actually German is one of the hardest to learn because of their grammar. I don't have a clue as I can speak passable French and that's it, but was wondering if that langauge is a bitch to learn as she hinted that maybe I should learn it, as her parents don't speak English. Great........ :rolleyes

My aunt lives in Germany and says the grammar in the German language is really hard to get a grasp on unless you have a knack for languages. It took her some time to start speaking German fluently and she does know a couple of languages already.

German is piss to learn.

In other news, my car died today, I'm so sad.
But contrasted against my girlfriend, whose uncle died, it's nothing..

Bollocks, languages are not a strong suit of mine, looks like I'm gonna have to dump her :p
