Retirements Thread - Rohit Sharma - Test

I have to agree that this is the right foot forward by Rohit. To me, he wasn't the best ever Test cricketer- part of me believes Rohit got a longer rope in the format+ the sudden resignation of Kohli left them with no alternative- hence the last 3 years see Rohit play Test matches more than ever.

I had a feeling that his average would be less, but I was pleasantly surprised to see him averaging above 40 in the format, after playing 67 Tests- 12 hundreds too! Good showing.

As mentioned above, Virat would be the next to go- I believe post the England series? Remains to be seen though who will lead the team now- lot of talk about them not preferring Bumrah, but in my opinion, he seems to be the best placed for the role at the moment.

Drama in Indian cricket- Virat wants to join Rohit as well, after being turned down for the Test captaincy. Should clear out in a few hours from now.

Personal opinion, I think it will be good for India. But both deserve a home farewell game at least.

Turned down? Was he really interested in the job given that he had given it up earlier?

There have been reports that an ex-India captain wanted the job, but was turned down. I think, Only Kohli fits the bill there.

Furthermore, what I don't understand is -why cant Kohli simply announce retirement? Why tell the BCCI that he is planning? Is there something more to it than meets the eye?

Confirmed that VK wanted to be Test captain -request was turned down by the BCCI. In retaliation,Virat announced that he will retire from the format.

I don't think the Indian team needs a divisive character in these times. We are trying to build towards the future. If someone is demanding things and then trying to play if and Only if those demands get fulfilled, I think he is better off elsewhere.

Do you have a captain in mind who can lead the team on England soil like he did? You remember what happened the last time when Kohli led India in England ? Mind you, the great captain MSD failed on that soil.

If he wants to come back to the role and groom a younger player, why not? BCCI has been hypocrite from the beginning. They removed him from ODI captaincy because they wanted one captain for all the limited over formats. Then we saw game of thrones, handing over captaincy to one player after other.

He has all the rights to demand, especially when he is the most successful captain in Tests. We all know Indian team dominated the Test format under him, not just at home but on foreign soil too. IF he has asked for captaincy, it's a blessing in disguise for the selectors, that too when such an important series is coming up and we do not have a (experienced) leader.

Ok. He has the right to ask. The board has the right to refuse. However, one isnt greater than the game that he can simply put forth the threat of retirement. Mind you, his form and returns haven't been there as well.

He led well in during the time he was captain, we dominated-true. He also had a settled side and a good bowling attack at his disposal then. Had Kohli been captain in BGT 2024, the result would not have miraculously over turned.

I personally don't have anyone in mind. But we know it will be Gill. Had Ashwin not hung up his boots, I'd have gone for him.
