Retirements Thread - R. Ashwin

Ross Taylor joins the chorus.

A great servant of New Zealand cricket. Massively under-rated but was one of their top cricketers for a long long time.

One of my favourite cricketers. Was the third best ODI cricketer over the last ODI cycle. Just a shame that he couldn't bring it all to the main event.

Still expected him to play till the 2023 WC but given how COVID doesn't seem to go away and his steep decline recently, I guess he wanted to take the break.

Quinton de Kock announces sudden retirement from Test matches. Will continue to play white-ball international cricket for South Africa.

(Also can a staffie update the thread title)

Guess De Kock is likely to soon become a freelancer (i.e. quit internationals and ply his trade in domestic leagues worldwide). Good for him if that happens! People should be free to pick and choose what they want to play.

Social media is abuzz with all comments (primarily from subcontinental goons) about how he's prioritizing domestic leagues over nation, blah blah blah. But its his choice and my respect for him doesn't go down in any manner because of this! Go well, QDK! :cheers

Guess England will get a keeper soon in QDK :p Retire from Africa play for England. @wasteyouryouth ;).

Jokes apart, that is a shock retirement from tests. I do not blame him as in times like these, 3 different formats are too much. Kill ODI's already and have T20 and Tests as the only formats or else we will keep losing big players like QDK from Tests.

Wish him well.

This is what De Kock had said,

Quinton de Kock said:
I have taken a lot of time to think about what my future looks like and what needs to take priority in my life now that Sasha and I are about to welcome our first child into this world and look to grow our family beyond that. My family is everything to me and I want to have the time and space to be able to be with them during this new and exciting chapter of our lives.

I love Test cricket and I love representing my country and all that it comes with. I've enjoyed the ups and the downs, the celebrations and even the disappointments, but now I've found something that I love even more.

In life, you can buy almost everything except for time, and right now, it's time to do right by the people that mean the most to me.

So I think this could just be assumed that he is plying for T20 franchise Cricket but it's nothing more than a rumour at this stage.

I'd say its good he has taken this decision. Paves the way for youngsters to come through the ranks.
T20 has definitely opened up avenues for players to keep playing into their 40s regardless of form. However, from a national stand-point, this would create a bottleneck, especially when it comes to grooming the new guys. I wouldnt be surprised if Shoaib Malik announced retirement over the coming few months as well.

Next announcment will be by Tim Paine or Shoaib Malik ;)
