Say no to Doordarshan

Good news is that STAR TV is finally going to offer its DTH services in 2006 with "Competetive Prices", "200+ channels", rich content and quality. It might be called "Space TV" Their service was delayed over ZEE tv's DTH because they waited for Indian Govt. to subsidize and legislate something in favour of all the Pay channels and their "booked tranponders" are yet to take off. The satellite is getting launched in mid-december,2005. STAR obviously has the best bouquet of channels and they should be able to persuade SONY as well. I hate ZEE TV anyways. It sucks big time. So things are looking good for 2006. But wait and watch.

Things will be good if the telcast rights for Indian cricket are indeed given to ESPN STAR.

The latest on that tangle was that ZEE has offered to withdraw its cases given that the rights are given to them.

I wonder what kind of cases those F***ing ZEE guys are talking about. Dumb a$$ w@nkers. Never liked their programming anyways. And they got their monoply in AUS and NZ as well. It will cost you $50NZ to watch Zee here on top of $800 installation. It makes me so sick.

in Bangalore, India the cable guy charges Rs 350( around US $5). We get around 80 channels which include Star Sports, ESPN, Ten Sports and the so called sports channel DD sports. we also get around 6 english movie channels, 40 regoinal channels, 7 music channels..so it IS cheap!!! how much does Cable tv cost in other countries like UK?

I haven't checked though its around 50 pounds for starting packages and with all the goodies and channels must me around 80-90 pounds.
IN AUS its $99 for the major package. Here in NZ its $70 for the major channels.
But beleive me the content and programming available in India is the best in the world. SKY TV sucks here, I had it for 8 months during the world cup 2003 but after that nothing so great to watch.

Hi Guys,

I had written on this topic when cricinfo had raised this issue during the ind-pak '05 series.

I simply hate the doordarshan coverage. But I would like to clarify a few things which the others have posted on this forum.

1) Doordarshan is just showing the feed produced by some other channel. Thus it is the commentators of that channel that you are listening to, and not DD's. The last home series v/s Pak was produced by TWI and the Australian and South African series were produced by Ten sports. That was why we didnt hear dumbheads like Arun Lal,Maninder Singh ,etc during AUS and SA series. Thus we cannot blame doordarshan for the commentry as they are not the ones responsible for it.

2) I am surprised that no one raised the topic which I thought would be the first one to be discussed about in this forum. The HIGHLIGHTS-Doordarshan doesnt have competent staff who can produce the highlights within a few hours. So what do they do ? They show the ball by ball repeat telecast of the whole match or the day's play.
When there are so many people who find watching test cricket LIVE boring, this amazing channel shows the whole damn days play within half an hour of the end of the day's play. The highlights are shown only the next day at a time when most would have left for work ,school or college. This is the most bugging thing for me in them telecasting cricket.

Well ,we are talking about Doordarshan in general.Even before the telecast tangle of 2004,the DD guys held the rights and the commentry team was :
s manjrekar
arun lal
maninder singh
l sivaramakrishna
k srikanth and charu sharma being limited to the studio

After that the Pakistan series was produced by Nimbus not by TWI as you have stated.
The DD guys have shown 4 balls over during the Indo Pak series.

Agreed we cannot blame DD for commentry,but even DD had these bunch of guys who cannot commentate.The very same people.
You may say that I am favouring ESPN STAR over here,but DD is no where qualified to show cricket matches.
They are only getting it as they are India's only terrestial network.

I agree with you iceman_waugh that DD is a pathetic channel and doesnt deserve to be telecasting dometic matches, let alone international ones.

I would love to be watching the matches on ESPN-STAR or even TEN SPORTS as they add a new dimension to the game.

But what I was stating was that we cannot blame DD for the commentary for the past 2 or 3 series as they are not producing it even though all these commentators are in DD's team as well...Manjrekar is the only decent commentator in that lot..I dont know why he is still stuck with those nuts !

Hi, I live in the UK and here the very basic pack is ?13. Medium one (which I have) is ?20 per month. Top of the range with all the best movie channels and Sky Sports which show the best live sports is ?40 per month. On top of the ?20, I pay ?10 a month for SONY and B4U and ?5 for Star Plus and Star News.Which works out to ?35. This is around Rs.2500 per month. Compare that to Rs.150 per month in India....

I couldn't agree with you more, cricketfanatic.

The only commentator I like is Ravi Shastri, the others keep repeating the same stuff over and over again, especially Arun Lal.

Atul Wasan chants in english as well as hindi and also sucks in both languages due to which we cant understand properly. "wicket kuch jyada movement nahi di kha raha tha, seam ya swing bilkul nahi ho raha tha and due to which ball bat par achcha connect ho raha tha aur ballebajo ne achchi score banayi" etc etc

Mohinder Amarnath is The worst amongst them. whenever he sings his
****ing poetry about players, i feel like throwing my arm out.
doesnt speak english properly but talks in hindi as if he has done his masters in that language.
