As expected Shashank Manohar was unanimously elected new BCCI President today by BCCI. His appointment had been but a mere formality once the East Zone states, led by Saurav Ganguly of CAB helm, backed Manohar.
Manohar was a one time key Srinivasan aide and had sat alongside Srinivasan to end Lalit Modi's BCCI career. Srinivasan and Manohar had a major falling out in 2013, once spot fixing allegations surfaced, Manohar was the first to openly demand Srinivasan's resignation.
Srinivasan tried his best to sneak in through the back door by trying to back Sharad Pawar for the President's post. However all his moves were thwarted by Anurag Thakur who is the face of the new BCCI Administration. Thakur was said to be key in convincing Sharad Pawar that Srinivasan was best kept out and that Manohar was the person to back.
Thus the Pawar base West Zone didn't put up any candidate to oppose Manohar's nomination by the East Zone, and this paved the way for Manohar to be elected unopposed and thus left the Srini camp without options.
Manohar has a reputation of being a no nonsense administrator and his record speaks for itself. He was key to kicking out Lalit Modi once it became clear that he was into corruption. Manohar was the first to publicly ask for Srini's sacking after spot fixing allegations.
Manohar was ruthless in dealing with Kochi Tuskers, and promptly banned the IPL outfit over allegations of breach of contract. The Kochi Tuskers allegedly had not shown their source of funding and allegedly had 'influenced' Lalit Modi to allow the franchise through, despite irregularities.
The status of CSK and RR still hangs in the balance and Manohar has been an open supporter to terminating the two franchises, so it will be interesting to see how things go from here.
