South African Spinners

Petersen looks good to me, I think is is a handy spinner. Smith just doesn't trust him enough. They aren't used to spinners, to the fact that they may get smashed around a bit.
There was this young offie who got picked to tour Indian. I forgot his name. A young black offspiner, Thmbasha or something like that, I forget. But he is a young spinner in RSA...

Peterson is awful. Doesn't deserve a place, just gets in because of the quota system.
Boje was also distinctly average.
Paul Harris looks good to be fair, if they treat him well and nuture him he could become pretty good.
Johann Botha looked good, he just threw, and threw badly, I doubt he'll come back with the success he had before.

South africa are just a pace team, untill they can get a amazing spinner they can proggress in the world rankings but for the moment there staying

A lot of past great sides haven't had a spinner.
It's not a nessesity. It just depends on the rest of the attack.

Paul Harris looks to have a lot of talent...and can spin it at home . Peterson is a shocking international spinner, I reckon our club team could take him to the cleaners. (Well we do have a first class batsman in our team :p)

In the modern one day game, it's a dangerous business to lack slow bowlers. Of course, a good spinner adds dimension and can sniff out tough wickets, but there's much more. They change the tempo of the game, which can often make a batsman bogged down and also relieve pressure from fast bowlers to bowl their overs faster than they'd prefer. South Africa currently face this problem with over rates, so it is in their best interests to find someone who can bowl a tidy spell.

The problem for South Africa is that they have to keep picking quota boosting players and in addition they have that old world view of spinners, so they will never give a spinner a preference in the quota hierachy unless they can bat like crazy.

As I currently play club cricket in South Africa I can safely say that Captains and coaches don't trust and are generally scared to bowl spinners. It is a sad mentality in SA cricket that players and administaion only care about pace and how far you can hit a cricket ball, SA cricket needs an attitude adjustment if "Brave Cricket" is ever going to be fully Implemented

Here they are

The are only 3 spinners of international quality in SA :

Thandi Tshabalala: Young Off Spinner.. Has been the best domestic bowler in the Pro 20 ( South African 20/20) for the last 2 seasons. He has an over-the-top action like harbajan, but bowls it a bit slower and has good flight variation. He has been given time to develop and is bowling along side Boje in the domestic scene.

Johan Botha: Uncoventional Off spinner. Quick through the air and can bowl a doosra.

And lastly Paul Harris.
