AUSTRALIA has enlisted a specialist opposition scout to aid its quest for redemption at this month's World Twenty20, and head coach Tim Nielsen predicts the growth of cricket's shortest format will eventually demand different coaches for different forms of the game.
In a sign of a more sophisticated approach to Twenty20, and a determination to erase past failures, Cricket Australia has outsourced some of its planning for the tournament to Michael Sholly, a highly successful player and coach at Melbourne University and Melbourne cricket clubs.
Nielsen said it made sense, because of Australia's hectic schedule, to use an expert who could analyse opposition teams and players in the IPL, and provide a blueprint for the coaching staff and Twenty20 captain Michael Clarke.
A ratings winner: Nielsen spruiks idea of specialist Twenty20 coaches
Originally thought he was talking about someone replacing him as coach of the T20 side. From my understanding, he wants T20 coaches to teach the players how they should be playing T20. Don't know how useful it will be until the T20 WC as the odd T20 or two usually doesn't require that much thought.
