The failing opener after 12 months of hell has been dropped from Test Cricket!

England in Sri Lanka, 2007-08

Strauss considers his options

October 21, 2007

Andrew Strauss says he is still coming to terms with being omitted from England's Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka and has yet to decide on his next option. After a poor 12 months he was overlooked in favour of Owais Shah and Ravi Bopara, the first time he has been dropped from the Test side since his debut in 2004.

Poor fella. Look back to 2005 and Matthew Hayden. Obviously an older and more accomplished player, but Hayden, like most Australian players, had the full faith of the selectors.

Hayden's run without a century lasted 14 months. 30 innings, 5 fifties and an average of 30. Strauss's run also lasted 14 months. 25 innings, 5 fifties and an average of about 29.

It's plausible to say that England as a whole are lacking the form to continue to carry Strauss around, while Australia can usually afford to be patient.

At 30, he is definitely not too old to return, in fact, his best cricket should still be ahead of him. Unfortunately, they dropped him at the most inconvenient time, immediately after the English cricket season. He'd probably be welcome back at Mosman in Sydney, but First Class would be ideal (to be honest, I think NSW could do with one more decent batsman, but I doubt they'd bite).

He has been struggling for a while. Now he needs to put his head down in county cricket and score the big runs.

You could say the difference is that before Hayden was ranked the number #1 batsman in the world for the last 2 or 3 years prior to going through that rough patch of form where he scored about 20 centuries in the space of about 40 Tests.

I think his past his best anyway.

He was struggling quite badly and yes he had a few dubious decisions that went against him but as a professional cricketer he should be able to bounce back. Hmm, i don't think he's past his best just yet. Haha, you guys forgot that Hayden was a no-namer and did poorly in 1994 and waited till 2000 to gain any recognition. Justin Langer struggled to get into the team till around 2000 where he finally cemented a spot. Damian Martyn is another one. Sehwag is on a similar boat actually and it would be interesting to see how these two react in the future.

Hmm, good comparison there karnog. Do you people reckon Struass will go through as bad a patch as Sehwag is ?

Australia are the best team in the world, if anyone can afford to 'carry' a player then they can. Strauss has so many technical flaws at the moment, picking him for a sub continent tour would be suicidal. We can open with Vaughan and play Shah or Bopara, probably Shah.

And so we see the departure of yet another Ashes 2005 hero. I think come the first Test against Sri Lanka we'll only have Pietersen, Hoggard, Vaughan and Bell left.

It's not half obvious Hayden is more accomplished, but Hayden's 20 centuries in 55 Tests is neither an unmatchable feat, nor an incomplete career for a 34 year old. By contrast, Strauss had 10 centuries in 30 Tests. If he is indeed past it, he joins a tiny group of international cricketers to not peak in their early-to-mid thirties.

Dang.
I always enjoyed his cut shots-seemed to be his best shot.
I can't see Vaughn opening in Tests. I'd say England should hope Tresco comes back ASAP.

I personally think that with a fit and firing Flintoff this side is better than that side.

I never said it wasn't. Just sad to see so many of the players from that glorious series fade away.
