Should ODIs be scrapped?

Graeme Swann has called for ODI cricket to be scrapped. Whilst his view is probably coloured by the 5-0 drubbing England just experienced in India he has a very good point. Test cricket and T20 is quite enough to be going on with. 50 over games are more often than not dull, predictable and over by the change in innings.
Of course it won't happen as long as the BCCI hold sway but I'd be interested to know if it's just English cricket fans who agree with Swann or whether he'd get support in other countries too.

Source.

Perhaps just tone them down, 3 match series once in a while. Definitely do away with the 7 match series.

I don't understand what the BCCI has got to do with this. ODI cricket is very much interesting and IMO ,we have definitely seen a lot many interesting encounters. Swann's view has been colored, no doubt by the drubbing that they received at the hands of India recently.

Again, just cause England are the T20 champions ,does not mean that theformat should be carried forth. Just cause England are good in Test cricket and have signed some multi-million dollar deals with Investec is not a good point to continue. Swann's perception of ODI cricket rests on the fact that England suck big time in that particular format.

I wonder if he would share the same views if England were the reigning World Champions. :mad

I agree, it probably shouldn't be scrapped, but the amount of ODIs played should be greatly reduced. 7 Match Series are boring

I have to disagree with Swann, but the Champions Trophy has to go IMO.

Yes, get back the ICC Knockout competition, that was real fun. I think they had only two of them, one in Bangladesh in 1998 and the second in Kenya in 2000. That way every match becomes important and the interest levels go up drastically.

Pretty much anything Swann says, do the opposite. I'm basing this off him being a massive ??????. He should stop playing ODI's and collecting cheques from them if he feels so strongly about it.

The BCCI has a history of following the money ie. the format India is most likely to win at/whatever will bring in the most revenue. After the 2007 T20 World Cup, they hyped the IPL and made stacks. When they hit #1 in the Test rankings they started scheduling random Test series against SA and Aus. And now they've won the World Cup, I guess the assumption is that BCCI will focus on ODI scheduling. Any coincidence that after India got smashed in the England Tests that the Test Championship idea got replaced quickly by another Champions Trophy? No, because it's all about ratings on Indian TV and of course Indians want to watch Indians win. That's why they wanted 4 Indian teams to make the Champions League this year. It's the reason for most things in cricket. That's just what the BCCI does, they like money. It's the cards world cricket has to play with.

Having pointed that out, Swann probably wouldn't have complained so much if England excelled in ODIs, because obviously you'd enjoy a format more if you were winning more games in that format.

For me personally, I'm with Mark. More 3 and 5 game series, no more 7 game series. And less gimmicky rules. I think ODIs are OK, they are just a bit boring outside a World Cup I find, as there is no real consequence.

Nonsense in my opinion. ODI's are fun. ODI's test your patience to survive out there for a longer period (similar to test cricket) and it also tests your fast scoring skills (like how T20 does). It has a bit of both worlds, and it should stay. T20's should never be taken seriously, and should be used just to grow the game financially and entertain people occasionally. Just because England suck at ODI's doesnt mean the format should be scrapped.

Nothing wrong with them. And because of the WC, they do have some history and importance. But I think 3 match series is enough. 5 and 7 are just too long and boring, because the only time they really matter is the WC.

Bullshit... Just because you suck you feel like scrapping ODI's. Whoever thinks Champions Trophy is been scheduled due to BCCI fine and good atleast we have the balls to dominate the cricket game even if with money... And there isn't a fact where Indian team sucks at cricket. They compete hard and fine.

Test Championship cancellation reason was given and if you think its because of BCCI, why don't you join the ICC? Check out all the problems they have to face.

ODI's won't be scrapped no matter how much England suck. They will soon be losing No 1 spot in test cricket then please don't say scrap test cricket :p

ODI's are just about fine, it's more of a challenge for the 'skippers' than the respective ones leading the test/T20 sides. I'm gonna have to disagree with Swann here, for ONCE.

ODIs I think is in fact the best format that tests the skill of a player after Test cricket. In ODIs, all type of players like those who can play long innings as well as as those who can hit a long way can be a part of it. Its much better than the usual slam bang T20 at least for the players to work on their technique and skill.

Test cricket might not be everyone's cup of tea and same goes with T20. Guys like Virat Kohli and Colin Ingram can do very good in ODIs as they are not at all bad players.

Coming back to the format, well its not at all boring with the new rules. Yes its a bit long but that doesn't mean ODIs should be scrapped.

Reducing the number of ODIs will be the key here with maximum of 5 ODIs in a series. Also, I think scrapping the no runner rule can do wonders to the ODI format as batsmen would be able to play long innings of course, false injury should be checked and even doctors of neutral nation (not belonging to the countries that would be playing a match) can be appointed for primary examination of course out of the ground which won't take long anyway.

But the bottom line is, whatever might players like Swann think, ODIs are here to stay.
