I'll do these nominations in blocks as much as possible, hopefully I get most if not all covered by the deadline! Like last year I do wanna cover some people deserving of recognition that haven't been yet nominated so I'll hopefully do them justice if possible. I'll try to have a batter and bowler included if possible but I'm happy to leave only one in if that's the rule. :)

Test Player of the Year - :sri: Dinesh Chandimal | :aus: Pat Cummins
  • I'm surprised that Babar's received the bulk of the nominations so far as this has been a decent year to bat for many, certainly the most friendly in this current pace revolution and whilst Babar deserves credit for the way he's just accumulated runs in a lineup that has sometimes been brittle... I can't see past those roads that Ramiz served up kindly for him to benefit from even if that is a bit harsh. So I'll nominate Chandimal who played the best knock of this year with his unbeaten 206* which led a Sri Lankan side that might have had one of those nervy moments to a 554 score against Australia's 364 and eventually caused an innings defeat to salvage the series against them. He failed to turn up with a 50+ score in only one test this year which was Sri Lanka's worst test defeat in games he played. In terms of individual accolades... he does have the highest batting average (over 100) this year healthily boosted by that double century. Commiserations to Mitchell, Blundell, Khawaja, Shakeel and Brathwaite who all deserve a nomination at the least too for various reasons.

  • As for bowlers... a trio of overseas pacers standout for being excellent on the Pakistani highways and I'm going with Cummins who's got a 5-fer there with an overall bowling average of 21. I do think this is a pick biased by me watching him on multiple occasions this year and being just unplayable as he has generally faced favourable opposition like pre Bazball England on home soil and perhaps the weakest batting units to have turned up for an Aussie summer in a long time alongside having the benefit of a strong supporting cast and the benefit of being captain which gives him the leeway to bowl when he thinks he can best contribute. Both Anderson and Robinson deserve a shoutout.. especially Jimmy who keeps aging like fine wine and was spectacular as always.. I might have just opted for him on another day where I didn't watch Cummins bowl one of the greatest spells in cricket history. In the current pace bowling revolution aided by some pitches that offered generous support to spin there won't be a lack of names who could have been there and these include in no order Boland, Jayasuriya, Jansen, Wood, Starc, Joseph, Naseem and others that I'm surely forgetting.

ODI Player of the Year - :aus: Travis Head | :wi: Alzarri Joseph
  • Babar's been nominated multiple times already which is probably the main reason why I've gone with Head here. Head didn't have an easy task auditioning for Finch's role long-term and then stepping into it once the latter had retired but he managed to excel at both with his style of aggression that few other openers managed to achieve on a consistent basis (112 SR @ 68.75). This includes two 50+ scores in all of three series' that he played with a couple of centuries thrown in for good measure. If he could get going thos bloke was unstoppable and he will be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming ODI WC if he can sort out his spin troubles. Other than the already nominated Babar and Raza, Latham, Litton, Shreyas, Gill, Tector (seriously, this bloke has only failed to score above 50 once this year across six games and that includes two centuries against NZ) and Salt deserve mentions.

  • Joseph's easily been the most improved bowler over the last couple of years and it's finally reflected in his numbers. Hazlewood, Boult, Bumrah, and the Fizz are the only pacers with a better economy rate than him (4.61) after filtering and that is elite company to be in. He's also got the most number of wickets among full member pacers (27 wickets @ 25). This has been achieved despite being in a bowling unit that barring Hosein has frequently failed to turn up and there are only bright things ahead for this bloke as he grows into being the leader of the WI pace attack across formats. Zampa's already been mentioned whilst Mehidy's got a nomination too.. other than them I'd say Boult, Fizz, Siraj, Prasidh, Shakib, Starc, Rashid Khan, Rauf, Henry, Farooqi and Hosein all deserve a mention. Hopefully we get more competitive ODIs in 2023 too with as many bowlers impressing at the least.

T20I Player of the Year - :nz: Glenn Phillips | :ire: Josh Little
  • SKY has been unanimously nominated but spare a thought for Phillips who had to break into a conservative side after being rejected earlier for his inconsistency in the past and proceeded to finally seal his spot with swashbuckling displays of hitting that showed how poor NZ management was for trying to fit a trio of Guptill, Conway and Williamson until near the WC. These include a century against SL riding his luck when no one else turned up and a fifty against England in the WC and two spectacularly destructive fifties against WI and Bangladesh. All of this was achieved whilst he was being the world's quickest outfielder and backup bowler/wicket-keeper. And simply because SKY was beyond human capacity last year, the other blokes worth a mention are Kohli for his spectacular return to form when it mattered, Rizwan and Babar for continuing to be the best opening pair in the current T20I world, Raza for nearly carrying Zimbabwe all the way to a semis, Buttler for leading his country to the WC whilst starring, Miller and Mo for their middle order shenanigans.

  • This was perhaps the toughest one for me to nominate. Shaheen was brilliant when he did turn up but he was riddled with injury troubles that affected his presence and form sometimes. Nortje and Curran both had dream WCs and the latter was converted into a death bowler because a premium death bowler couldn't be fit and he aced the challenge whilst ousting a known name on the T20 circuit for the same role. Rauf was incredible at the death too and gave the Pakistani attack real belief in that anything could be defended with him at the back end. Wood was yet another fiery quick that looked unplayable on the few occasions he did play. Farooqi, Arshdeep, Parnell, Joseph and Blessing himself all showed that you don't need top end pace to influence proceedings. Moving onto the spinners... Bracewell meme'd his way to an extraordinary bowling average in single digits with an economy below 6 but had able support in Santner who took his game to the next level this year. Shadab, Mujeeb, Theekshana, Hasaranga, Rashid Khan would also do some wondrous stuff at times. In the end though... keeping with the theme of picking plucky overlooked individuals (with the exception of Pat) I've gone with the excellent Josh Little who would bowl scintillating spells at the WC against three top sides restricting them to less than a run a ball in his time alongside entering the tournament in good form having failed to pick up wickets only thrice (two of which were against associates). He finished the year as it's highest T20I wicket-taker and given that he's not had the kind of support that others on this list have enjoyed... I feel like he deserves to be nominated as the first choice.

Cricketer of the year - :zim: Sikandar Raza

  • I don't think I can look past him.. what he's achieved this year for Zimbabwe has been extraordinary and perhaps Babar is unlucky that Raza has also contributed with the ball whilst he has no chance of making up there. Yet again this is a close one like the Jimmy vs Cummins debate.. on another day I might have gone with Babar for leading his side to two T20I finals while being the star of the side in all three formats but there has been something special about what Raza has achieved this year. With every passing match there were doubts as to whether he'd sustain his form and yet he continued to contribute in some way to the side. The only drawback I hold against him is that he didn't play any test cricket in 2022. A fairly significant one but then again... I don't think he can be blamed for that when he was the top run-scorer by a significant margin in the Zimbabwe regional games played as a FC substitute which shows that he would have bossed it in any test he played this year too. Honourable mentions as always must go to Stokes after Babar for his test captaincy, all-round performances in tests and T20Is (alongside reinventing himself in a new role there), Litton for carrying the Bangladeshi batting unit, Rizwan and Pant for being the best keeper-batters across formats, Cummins for being nigh on unplayable at times (even if his white ball skills need some polishing), Starc, Bairstow and Southee for the way they've revived their stagnant careers, Shreyas Iyer for being the best bridesmaid possible and Labuschagne for showing us all that you can indeed make a living as a world class cricketer by using luck as a tool.

Best captain of the year - :eng: Ben Stokes

  • The only other alternative to this seemed like super Pat for his work off the field and on the field to reform a side struggling with dressing room issues and some bold captaincy moves at times but in comparison to the other one... no surprise here from me as in a year filled with every captain having a question mark or two over the head somewhere Stokes has been extraordinary in revitalizing a side that seemed to have hit their nadir after the WI series loss and has galvanized them in a way that hasn't been seen in a long, long time. Make no mistake, Bazball is here to stay and Stokes is here to pen the foreword to a glorious chapter in England's cricket history.
