I've seen some old videos...where Dickie Bird was the umpire. He was very good, so was his reputation.

I prefer to go with David Shepherd, very calm figure, and very confident on the field. Taufel is up next, very young (low 30s!) but again very confident, and respected umprie.
Venkatraghavan was also very good.

I wonder what could be the possible reason for that....
He gave Inzi out so many times, when It was clearly not out, and
that made Pakistan loose matches.

Well I dunno if this thread could fairly be named ' the top three umpires ever', maybe of the modern period as we clearly don't know the ability of the umpires officiating in previous eras.
Dickie Bird, well I obviously know of him but wasn't around for his performances, but his devotion to the game earned him most of his respect I guess, I once heard he felt as if he was 'married' to the game, hence never sought a wife, and purely thrived upon his job and aimed to learn more about it, and was a quality umpire of course....
I hate Billy Bowden, I actually think he's way more boring than the others, purely because he's so repetitive when trying to be funny...

Not very sure about that. If you happen to read Sunil Gavaskar's autobiography - Sunny Days you'll find that he does not find Umpire Bird the fairest of all umpires and neither does he have very good things to say about his competence or the lack thereof.

Can't really talk about the "best umpires of all time" (who bothers much with the umpires anyway :p ) but Simon Taufel and Rudy Koertzen (sp?) have been excellent in recent times.

I think everyone in the list is the best!

And also, the spelling of many umpires in the poll is wrong! :)

I'm not talking on behalf of Sunny...it was just my impression, when i saw him on the field.

Of course...my impression/feelings may not be right, but thats because i haven't seen him a lot..when i compare to Shepherd or Taufel.

Has to be Fred Goodall. I'm sure Croft and Holding would agree. All Hadlee had to do was hit the pad and Fred's finger would go straight up. NZ wouldn't lose a test if we were allowed to have Fred umpire all of our games.

I have added the names of S. Venkat and Aleem Dar.
Also corrected all the spellings..... :)
Hope now it would be a better poll....
