Faster Explorer Browsing

You may have noticed that every time you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers when you open Windows explorer. To stop XP from doing this follow the instructions below.

Open My Computer
Click on Tools menu
Click on Folder Options
Click on the View tab.
Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
Click Apply
Click Ok
Reboot your computer
Try it now, you will see a significant increase in speed.

Saving Images on Firefox fix

Sometimes when you save an image using Firefox your Firefox is hanging up for like 20 seconds and than comes back with the image saved. If you have this problem, here's the answer:

1. Close Firefox
2. Go to your profile folder
3. Delete the following:
a) Cache Folder
b) Cache.trash Folder
c) downloads.rdf

Profile folder locations:

Locate your profile folder

Before the configuration files are presented, you should know how to find your profile folder, which is where Firefox saves all your settings on your hard drive.

* On Windows Vista/XP/2000, the path is usually %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\, where xxxxxxxx is a random string of 8 characters. Just browse to C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ on Windows XP/2000 or C:\users\\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ on Windows Vista, and the rest should be obvious.

* On Windows 95/98/Me, the path is usually C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\

That's it for now :).

Faster Explorer Browsing? Never knew about that one! Cheers!

How to block websites without a Software

1]Browse C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
2] Find the file named "HOSTS"
3] Open it in notepad
4] Under "127.0.0.1 localhost" Add 127.0.0.2 www.sitenameyouwantblocked.com , and that site will no longer be accessable.
5] Done!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Turn off the system beeps

Start Regedit.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound
Once there, locate Beep on the list on the right.
Right click on it and select Modify
Change the value equal to no
Reboot your computer and the beeps will be gone!

Lock your computer

Right click on an empty area of the desktop and choose 'new' then 'shortcut.' The create shortcut wizard will open; in the first text box, type '%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation' and then give your shortcut an appropriate name on the next page, and hit 'finish.'

You will notice that the shortcut you created has a blank icon. To select a more appropriate one, right click on the shortcut and hit 'properties.' In the 'shortcut' tab, click the 'change icon' button.

In the 'look for icons in this file' box, type '%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll' then click 'ok' to see a range of icons for your new shortcut. Choose an appropriate icon. Your desktop locking shortcut is now ready for use. Test it out.

Good ones! Though the folder lock was mentioned by Adarsh once.

Faster Explorer Browsing? Never knew about that one! Cheers!

Do you have any where you can speed up your computer?

Yes eto'o;

For a Safer, faster XP Close Unwanted Services

To disable unneeded startup services for a safer, faster XP, use the "Services" Admin Tool (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services). If you are a single user of a non-networked machine, you can disable the following items, with no ill effect.

Alerter
Clipbook
Computer Browser
Fast User Switching
Human Interface Access Devices
Indexing Service (Slows the hard drive down)
Messenger
Net Logon (unnecessary unless networked on a Domain)
Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing (disabled for extra security)
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager (disabled for extra security)
Remote Procedure Call Locator
Remote Registry (disabled for extra security)
Routing & Remote Access (disabled for extra security)
Server
SSDP Discovery Service (this is for the utterly pointless "Universal P'n'P", & leaves TCP Port 5000 wide open)
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Telnet (disabled for extra security)
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Upload Manager
Windows Time
Wireless Zero Configuration (for wireless networks)
Workstation

Bypass Recycle Bin

If you do not wish a file or folder you are deleting (or a group of files or folders) to end up in the recycle bin, for security or privacy reasons, there is a simple keyboard shortcut to avoid it.

To bypass the recycle bin when deleting a file, press and hold the SHIFT key as you press delete or select the delete command from the menu. You will see a request for confirmation, and once you say 'yes' the files will be permanently deleted, and absolutely non-restorable from Windows XP.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

:cheers

You can also access the services by typing services.msc in the Run dialog.
I also prefer to disable the System Restore, Automatic Updates, Secondary Logon, Help and Support,Security Center and Windows Firewall services.

hey about the recycle bin. i have an opposite problem. when i delete my files theyre just gone. they dont go in recycle bin. i think my lil bro must have pressed shift key while he was pressed delete lol. he loves playin around with keyboard. so is there anyway i can undo that and get my stuff back in the bin?

You can use disk recovery software to get the deleted stuff back. There are loads of such softwares. Try googling for them. However it may work only if you havent copied any files into the drive from where the data was deleted.
