SHANE Warne has talked privately with Australia captain Ricky Ponting about ending his limited-overs retirement for the World Cup.

National coach John Buchanan yesterday told The Sun-Herald from the Bangladeshi city of Fatullah that Warne had spoken to him, Ponting and Australia's selectors about making a comeback before the tournament in the Caribbean next year. Buchanan urged the peerless leg spinner to decide as soon as possible.

Cricket Australia issues its player contracts this week. The size of each player's six-figure deal is determined by whether they play both Tests and one-dayers.

CA will want to know Warne's plans before deciding how much to pay him.

"Ricky, myself and [chairman of selectors] Andrew Hilditch have all had discussions with Shane about the World Cup," Buchanan said.

"There needs to be commitment or otherwise from him. Either he makes himself available in terms of the team moving forward with its plans, or not. And then the selectors will have some decisions on their plate from there. Shane spoke to us in South Africa, and then again in Bangladesh.

"There are a lot of considerations for him, mainly in terms of the longevity of his career. He needs to come to a conclusion. With the contract meetings coming up, I imagine it will be one of the topics for discussion."

Warne retired from one-dayers at the last World Cup. What should have been a triumphant departure became a nightmare when he was suspended on the eve of the tournament for failing a drugs test. He flew home before a ball was bowled.

Australia's next one-day tournament is the Champions Trophy in India in October. The grand plan is for the world champions, who have been running auditions for places over the past six months, to play their best squad from the Champions Trophy right through to the World Cup.

"We're pretty sure about a core group of people now," Buchanan said.

"Things have moved forward. We've been able to see what depth we have with some changes in the team, forced or otherwise. A fair bit of planning and thinking will be done during this break period. The next tournament will be the beginning, if you like, of the competitive phase leading into the World Cup."

Australia's bowling attack in the final one-dayer against Bangladesh was led by Mitchell Johnson, Brett Dorey, James Hopes, Dan Cullen and Mark Cosgrove. Such an experimental line-up won't be seen again as preparations for the cup gain momentum.

Australia's elite list of 25 contracted players will offer few surprises. NSW batsman Phil Jaques and speedster Stuart Clark will earn upgraded deals. Cosgrove, a bolter to be Adam Gilchrist's full-time opening partner, and Johnson are likely to be included for the first time after being eased into the national fold.

The bigger winner in the money will be Mike Hussey. Having become the backbone of the Test and one-day teams, his pockets are about to be lined with gold. Or about $500,000. Only Ponting and vice-captain Gilchrist will receive bigger contracts.

Good to know us Aussies will find out soon if Warne will be there come the WC. Going by the Windies pitch I would say we may well play Hogg and Warne together. Cullen still might be in the squad as 3rd spinner given the nature of the Windies wickets.
Also seems like we have our WC squad sorted and there won't be any outsiders apart from Warne and hopefully Tait.

This is good news for Australia. Surely Warne will make a difference with the ODI side.

He definitely would give the bowling a better feel to it but it would be tough on Hogg for him to be dropped. But as I said they both may well play together.
However it would be surpising to see Warne u-turn his ODI retirement as he has been stating clearly he doesn't plan on coming out of it.

Warne would be a great inclusion but personally I think it would be a bit selfish if Warne returned. Aus already have Cullen who is pretty decent and Hogg who has done a pretty good job since Warne retired.

i personally think warne is a too proud man to go out of ODI with his name under the droug scandal. he has made the decision to only play tests to help his country and i think he would love to go out of ODI after a world cup win. that would capp it off perfectly for the best spinner ever

I am waiting for Warne in ODI team.He can make the difference to this Australian side along with Mcgrath and Gillespie.

Here's the latest on the issue,Warne says that he's not going to return.

MELBOURNE, May 2 (Reuters) - Leg-spinner Shane Warne has reiterated he will not return to Australia's one-day squad ahead of the World Cup in the West Indies next year.

"I must have said it 14,000 times. I have retired and I have no aspirations to return," Warne said after leading English county side Hampshire to victory over Essex in a C&G Trophy match on Monday.

Warne played the last of his 194 one-day internationals for an ICC World XI in a tsunami charity match in January 2005 and said he wanted to focus on his test career.

Captain Ricky Ponting revived talk of a Warne comeback on his return from the tour of Bangladesh earlier this week when he urged the 36-year-old Victorian to make a quick decision over his one-day future.

But Warne, who has taken a world record 685 wickets in 140 test matches, stressed he would not change his mind.

"I have taken 200 wickets in the last two years in test matches and that is no coincidence. I have been playing better than ever.

"I have to be fair to the squad. There is a lot of cricket ahead in the next year with the ICC Trophy, the VB series and the World Cup and they have to prepare.

"If Ricky said to me at some stage 'look we really need you', then I would think about it, but I don't think it would ever come to that."

Warne played in Australia's 1999 World Cup winning side but received a one-year suspension on the eve of the 2003 tournament in South Africa after testing positive for a banned diuretic.

hmm slightly disappointing Warnie wont be there but i think Hoggy and Cullen are more than capable.

I always had a strange feeling that Warne wouldn't come back to test cricket unless Australia 'really' needed him desperatley. It is apparent that the latest article typifies this.

No surprise there, he always said he wasn't coming back so changing his mind now would be selfish of him.

It's a shame, but inevitable; it would've been highly unlikely if he returned after a delayed decision like that. Also, although it may not have been the greatest conclusion to a spectacular ODI career, I think the abrupt end is fitting as it sustains the air of controversy and scandal that has played a major part of Warne's career. :p
Anyway, Hogg has forced his way back with consistent performances ever since his recall and deserves the experience of another World Cup, and Cullen is a more than capable back-up option.

Also Warne is currently in a head to head with Murali with regard to Test victims.Perhaps he feels that if he concentrates only on tests it would help him perform better.

Warne romp caught on camera - report
08 May 2006

Australian spin bowler Shane Warne has been allegedly caught on camera having a sex session with two models, including Christchurch-born Coralie Eichholtz.

British tabloid News of the World has published grainy black-and-white images of Warne and the two women in various sexual poses with a blow-up penis.

"I've known him for years but nothing happened before because I knew he was married," Eichholtz told the News of the World.

"But since his split he's been texting like mad. He even sent me one during a match."

Despite his wild night, Warne took seven wickets for 99 runs for his English county side Hampshire just hours later.
