This is maybe great news for the Australians. I hope he plays. A World Cup without the world's best legspinner would feel strange.
Warne may consider World Cup comeback
SHANE Warne may consider a comeback for the next World Cup - but only if there is no one ahead of him doing a good job.
This is the view of Warne's brother and manager Jason as speculation continued yesterday over whether Warne would make himself available for the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean.
Warne has spoken informally about the matter during general discussions with Australia selection chairman Trevor Hohns but there has been no indication of whether he will end his three-year exile from one-day international cricket.
A decision is likely to be a year away.
"It's still a long way off and no decision had been made," Jason said. "If someone makes the position their own between now and next season I don't think he would consider it because he would not want to take someone's place if they were performing well.
"But if no one puts their hand up and the position is there, he may consider it. It is too early to tell yet.
"I think everyone knows Shane was pretty disappointed the way things finished last time and if the circumstances were right who wouldn't consider it?"
Warne was banned for a year after being found guilty of taking a banned substance in a diet pill just before the last World Cup in South Africa in 2003.
He has not played a one-day game for Australia since the ban but remains in stunning form in the Test arena.
Brad Hogg remains Australia's first choice one-day spinner and continues to do a serviceable job. There is a feeling that the Cup format could suit him because he will have the element of surprise against fresh opposition as Australia works it way through the tournament.
But he is no Warne and the next best option, Victoria's Cameron White, is yet to totally convince the selectors of his worth.
There are hopes the new super-sub rule may offer Warne encouragement to return.
Hohns said yesterday he has received no indication from Warne he plans to end his one-day retirement.
"There's been no formal meetings about it - it has just been mentioned in general discussion by Shane," Hohns said.
"We cannot guarantee we would pick him - we won't give that guarantee to anyone.
"It has been a long time since Shane played one-day internationals and the game has changed a bit since then but we know what he can do."
Asked whether Warne would have to play in a tournament before being chosen for the World Cup, Hohns said: "To just be picked for the World Cup - I don't know that would be fair on anyone but we will have to wait and see."
If Warne does decide to return to the one-day scene it is unlikely to be before the final one-day tournament before the World Cup - next year's VB series involving England and New Zealand.
There would be little point in him playing this season or in the Champion's Trophy in India in September as Australia can use these matches to cast their net for other options.
