None of them- most players are more concerned about their team winning.

It wasnt about a team winning or not.

Otherwise were do you draw the line declare at 500, 600, 700 what score?

3 and a half days to play with 750 total is a good plan. Getting 400 during that why not? It comes down to the fact that WI needed something to inspire them.

England were beating them to death. God they scored 47 in an innings.

Yes a crap draw resulted. But if they had smashed them and got the win what then?

As for the question.

Its a hard call as anyone and numerous other players could do it.

Gilchrest, Vaughan etc

As who has the mental to take it on with form for big scores and wanting to push big scores for a team to follow.

Sachin would be my man.

They batted until after lunch on the 3rd day- Tests go for 5. How long does that leave? And the 750 was probably just when Lara figured that he'd have 400, if he was on 390 they would've kept going.

Sorry thought it was day two.

So fair enough it still leaves the fact that they needed a big score to breath life into their cricket.

two and a half days left to dismiss a team for a combined total under 750. Thats still not a hard ask.

If England hadnt fought back in the second innings a win was surely on the cards.

every one still forget that it was a flat pitch. If Lara declared at say 650, with WI poor bowlers & WI poor average in 2nd innings,
England would have made us bat again and god knows what WI would have done.

maybe bowled out for 150. Any 1st innings under 700 would be a disadvantage to WI on this sort of pitch

it would have to be an opener i s'pose... i couldn't see Gille do it... batting 7th or so he'd have to score it off of 100 balls of sumthing... i think that Langer and Hayden are both highly unlikly of scoring 300... i think some one like knew from India or Austrlia would have to do it... i dunno... all to compicated...

it's gotta be a left hander of course...

up leftys!!!!

It started to swing with what Lara should have done but moved back to the great 400 mark.

God its good to be first at something.

I reckon Lara's record may well fall pretty soon. Australia are going to be taking on a pretty poor Zimbabwe side where runs may come a lot quicker than they did for Lara against England. Who will do it? Maybe Hayden again, maybe Ponting, doesnt really matter, but Lara should be signing his endorsements pretty quickly methinks.
