Today, Windows downloaded an update, but when I restart the system, it says 'configuring updates 0%' - stays like that for ages, then says something like 'failure to configure updates - reverting changes'. What's going on and how do I get these damn updates to install properly?

Thanks in advance for any help. :)

That used to happen to me a lot on Vista on my laptop. Hasn't happened to me on Win7 so I dunno what the problem could be.

It's happening every time I start the system, but this time there's a countdown timer from Win Update saying to restart to finish installing important updates, maybe now it'll do it.

What did you do when it happened with Vista?

For me, it happens when it tried to update Microsoft Office. Other updates install fine, but when an update for Microsoft Office is available, it first says "Installing updates" but then fails to update and gives some error code. Tried to investigate it, but couldnt find a solution at all. What I do is, I manually download those particular updates from the Microsoft download center and update them manually.

These problems happen in Vista/Windows 7.

I just either didn't install the update, or kept trying until it worked.

OK, it seems to be fine now. I was getting a bit concerned because it took 3 restarts to get it to work. Hope this doesn't happen much in the future.

On one of my laptops the update took long time to install but thankfully there was no corrupt install message.

Happened to me as well. Mine kept restarting itself starting to configure then failing. Eventually worked and logged on.

I've never faced it. Once it took ages but it did install. I guess maybe it was too large?
