If they want to make cricket more exciting they should just make batting pitches all over the world. Harsh as it is, most people enjoy cricket when the batsmen are scoring runs. Only a small percentage appreciate good bowling and fielding.
That is obviously not a viable solution.
I think the powerplays can be modified a bit as suggested here, to space them out a bit. Perhaps the umpire can decide when to enact the powerplay.
(JK). Perhaps they could start by changing the name of the strategy (... powerplay?). The Supersubs at the moment are just really, really... stupid. If you want to develop a 12-man ODI game, you might as well allow full-fledged substitution, here, there and everywhere. The super-sub now is just too iffy for anyone to build in any concrete strategy.
Unless you're chockful of all-rounders, your plan is somewhat like this:
a) Win toss -> use supersub to advantage
b) Lose toss -> pray to God (or to yourself if you are agnostic or atheist)
Obviously it is not that clear-cut and differs from situation to situation, but you are just driving the advantage towards the team who has won the toss. And a team's success in a match should start with the quality of their players, not the outcome of a flipped coin.
