Your current take so far on the new rules

If they want to make cricket more exciting they should just make batting pitches all over the world. Harsh as it is, most people enjoy cricket when the batsmen are scoring runs. Only a small percentage appreciate good bowling and fielding.

That is obviously not a viable solution.

I think the powerplays can be modified a bit as suggested here, to space them out a bit. Perhaps the umpire can decide when to enact the powerplay. :D (JK). Perhaps they could start by changing the name of the strategy (... powerplay?). The Supersubs at the moment are just really, really... stupid. If you want to develop a 12-man ODI game, you might as well allow full-fledged substitution, here, there and everywhere. The super-sub now is just too iffy for anyone to build in any concrete strategy.

Unless you're chockful of all-rounders, your plan is somewhat like this:

a) Win toss -> use supersub to advantage
b) Lose toss -> pray to God (or to yourself if you are agnostic or atheist)

Obviously it is not that clear-cut and differs from situation to situation, but you are just driving the advantage towards the team who has won the toss. And a team's success in a match should start with the quality of their players, not the outcome of a flipped coin.

Well its your fault if you pick your super sub as a batter or bowler. The way to go is to have a all rounder thus taking away any disadvantage at the toss.

I've already made the point that this doesn't work. Even take the recent Super Series games. 3 tosses won by Australia and WTF did Cameron White do to influence the game? This is why I say playing a simple all-rounder as a sub isn't a good idea. It is consistently being proven that the loser of the toss is the one using the SuperSub to effect.

Challenger series-Super Sub used only ONCE in six innings.

So...whats the point?

The ICC have announced today that the Super Sub rule will be scrapped after the trial period. Yipee!

I for one am pleased to hear it

Me too, Zims a legend.

And yes it's the right decision to scrap them.

Those are very kind words, but I haven't really been away - I am still keeping a close eye on you :p

Well its good to hear that the super sub is gone.

On the power plays a see 2 ways of doing it.

1) Powerplay 2 must be taken before over 25 and power play 3 can only be taken between overs 25 - 50. This would make thing a little more interesting in the middle of the innings
2) One of the power plays is controlled by the bowling captain and one is controlled by the batting captain. With one previso that the batting powerplay must be taken before over 40. If the batting captain fails to take his power play before then, he looses it.

Just some ideas, would make the game a little more interesting. As in 2 the batting team can use it to either get away in the game, or to get out of trouble. Anyway just some ideas.
