New Zealand vs Sri Lanka @ New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg

Sri Lanka cruise to a 6 wicket win over group rivals New Zealand. Jayasuriya scored his 2nd 50 in succession and Jayawardene hit an unbeaten 54* to seal the win.

New Zealand lost the toss and were made to bat on a hard track. After just 2.3 overs the first wicket was down, that of Lou Vincent. A complete mix-up between batsmen saw them both at the same end and it was Vincent who had to go for 5. Sangakkara then dropped a difficult chance off Fulton from Dilhara Fernando. But very next ball Fulton did go, thanks to a superb 1 handed diving catch from Chaminda Vaas. Fulton went for 4 and Taylor (8) joined him edging to slip where Tharanga held on to a good catch. Fernando got rid of McCullum who was caught by Malinga for 12, leaving New Zealand reeling on 41-4. A quick fire fight back from Styris was ended after he skied one to Jayasuriya from an expensive Malinga, going for 25 (13). McMillan was next to go with Tharanga taking a good catch at slip from Jayasuriya, giving McMillan a 3 ball duck. And when Oram was run out a low score was inevitable. Oram went for a stupid 2nd and was out by a mile for 19 (18). Nobody resisted the Sri Lankan attack apart from Vettori who finished 17 not out. Jayasuriya took a wicket and Vaas 2 to seel off a fine bowling performance. New Zealand could only manage 115, being bowled out on the last ball of the innings.

Things started nervously for Sri Lanka as they lost 2 wickets in the first 13 balls. First to go was Upul Tharanga ran out by keeper McCullum after having no idea where the ball was. He stepped out his crease and McCullum picked up the ball and took off the bails. Sangakkara followed Tharanga's 1 with 5 hitting one straight down mid off's throat. Fulton took the catch with Bond being the bowler. In the 8th over a crucial incident in the match occured with McCullum droping an edge from Jayasuriya on 22. Oram was the unlucky bowler and New Zealand were left to rue that chance. Jayasuriya smashed 51* in 33 balls and at the crease for 41 minutes. He had hit 4 fours and a six on the way to his fifty before he was trapped plumb LBW to Mark Gillespie a ball later. This brought Silva to the crease who stayed just the one ball. Playing a full blooded drive which caught the edge and flew into McCullum's gloves. Dilshan came in and made his intent known by hitting a straight four off the hattrick ball. Dilshan took just singles to give Jayawardene a chance to get his 50. The skipper didn't dissapoint hitting 54* and bringing up his fifty in 31 balls. Jayawardene hit the very next ball to the boundary topping off a very fine win for Sri Lanka.

Nice and easy for SL there! I was expecting more of a match but never mind :( Nice story btw! No hanging around with the matches which is good! KUTGW! :)

Thanks tonka. I really am hoping for bigger scores in the super 8's. but at least the games have still had excitement and upsets :)

Not a bad match, I played 6 overs of a match on the PS2 late last night - Aus was making 62 from 6 overs! This game is made for 20/20!

Anyways, can't wait for some challenging Super 8's:p

South Africa vs Bangladesh @ Newlands, Cape Town

Just posting the scorecard for the last match from the group stages, and what a game it was. The best game of the tournament so far and it meant that the hosts are knocked out at the first round. Facing a tough young Bangladeshi side they posted a good score on a bouncy track. Bosman top scoring with 76. But good knocks from Razzaq (40*), Iqbal (33) and Rasel (31*) meant that Bangladesh got home with just 1 wicket left. The hosts who were held as high favorites for this tournament have been knocked out. This could mean crowds could suffer from now on, but with the games being very close and enjoyable it is still expected that there will be almost full capacity for the rest of the tournament. For Bangladesh it means they go into the super 8's unbeaten and full of confidence.

--------------------------

Ok just give you guys an idea of what will be happening in this story. I will get the tables and super 8 groups sorted out soon and then continue with the rest of the tournament. After the tournament is finished I will be moving on to a English Cricket story, featuring the domestic scene in 2008 using ICC02 and all the English international cricket from 2008. I am hoping just to keep stories going in this 1 thread and having links on the 1st post to all that I have done. I will soon add the links of matches posted so far in the tournament on the 1st post.

Cheers for reading and posting,
Trev

1 mistake is in the India games played box, says they only played 1 game, just thought i'd let ya know.

Very good story mate, Bangladesh have to be one of the favourites after performing so well in the groups. 2 big surprises to see England and South Africa go home so early. Pakistan also performed very well, as did Sri Lanka. It's going to be a very interesting super 8 stage.
