PNG managed to secure a good finish in the end, 26 runs coming off the last 2 overs thanks to their tail-end batters. They lived on the start provided by Ura and Vala and a sudden middle-order choke by the spinners put the innings in jeopardy. Engelbrecht starred with 4 wickets for just 18 while Roelof was extremely economical for just 12 runs in his spell for a wicket. PNG made the best of a bad situation and got at least a decent score for the start they had.

And the icing on the cake after Barresi's fifty- Engelbrecht and Timm VD Gugten finish things off in style for the Netherlands, not delaying the process, and getting there in the 19th over. PNG had the Dutch trapped by the 8th over but Barresi played a beautiful knock to steady the chase, and the likes of VD Merwe, Gugten and especially bowling hero Engelbrecht, who stars with the bat as well, help Netherlands cruise to the Final. Vanua and Kamea's valiant efforts end in vain for the Barramundis. And the finalists are set as the Dutch join the Hong Kong's men in red in the Grand Finale.

:ned: Netherlands won by 3 wickets (10 balls remaining)

(MOTM: Sybrand Engelbrecht)

1705083189266.png

There was no doubt about the MOTM, which was the man of the hour, 4 wickets, 1 catch, 1 run out and a finishing knock of 20* (14)- Engelbrecht was everywhere today in helping the Netherlands clinch this game and advance to the Final.

Engelbrecht <3, lower order saved us, quality knock from Barresi.

It's Time for the Final boys...

Hong Kong :hkg:

(Dubai International Stadium, Dubai)

Similar conditions, but in front of the huge Dubai Crowd to play for the trophy- @ShamiLoverGlipGlops and @Aravind. , I need your lineups for this Final Showdown. One last hurdle for glory.

Stat update will be done by today, hopefully before the Final.

Not going to disturb the winning combination. Lets go HK

Right after Van Beek and Klaasen removed 2 more of the Hong Kong batting, The economical show in the middle-overs from Roelof VDM and Engelbrecht completely slowed the Hong Kong innings down and brought the run rate to just 8. And with a bit of acceleration in that last over to get the game back on track, skipper Babar Hayat reaches his fifty, off just 35 balls, including 3 fours and 3 sixes. And Logan van Beek finishes things off at the death as Netherlands grab 3 more wickets and restrict the death-over run flow, and Hong Kong have been halted to 143/9. Babar lead from the front, played a brilliant fifty at a good pace, but had to go immediately at the start of the death from where he would have looked to accelerate. Nizakat Khan played a good supporting knock throughout, but the failure of the rest of the batting meant this is all Hong Kong could get. All bowlers except Gugten finished with decent figures as Van Beek got 3, Klaasen and de Leede got a couple and VD Merwe with a solitary wicket.

And finally, after two long overs he reaches the fifty-mark, a brilliant innings off 39 balls with 8 boundaries. And his partner de Leede has scored fantastically on the other end in these overs to get himself to 48* as well, and that means the Dutch need only 4 runs for victory now, with as many overs left. De Leede on strike, can he get his fifty and the winning runs??

FINAL_2.png

1705248742844.png

The man, Bas de Leede, has DONE IT! With a boundary off the first ball of the over he gets to his half-century and also wins the game for the Netherlands! And they are the champions of the Desert T20 Challenge! The Dutch lost both openers for cheap scores but that didn't stop them from having a good powerplay. Then Ackermann and de Leede took things into their own hands and they have stitched a partnership of 101*, as both score brilliant fifties, and have carried the Dutch to victory in the grandest of Finals. Only Nasrulla Rana of the Hong Kong bowlers could manage a wicket as the rest were hopeless against this strong willed Dutch batting that handled the chase in fine style. And now the Dutch are officially the winners of this competition, after 5 games, in their sixth encounter, they have won where it mattered the most and will reap the reward.

:ned: Netherlands won by 8 wickets (23 balls remaining)

(MOTM: Bas de Leede)

1705248986319.png

And the man of the day, the man of the moment, it's none other than Bas de Leede again! Let's not forget he scalped 2 important wickets in the first innings for just 12 runs off his 2, and he followed that up with a brilliant knock of 52* including hitting the winning boundary to take Netherlands home. And he is truly the man of the match and one who delivered with both bat and ball when it mattered the most

1705249219004.png

And the Netherlands lift the Desert T20 trophy in style! The entire team performed so well throughout the tournament, and managed to win almost every game leading upto the final. Hong Kong fought brilliantly despite their terrible start to the tournament to fight back into the Finals, but they were outclassed in all departments today by the Men in Orange.

@Aravind. @ShamiLoverGlipGlops

And that is to wrap up the tournament, thanks everyone for being part of my first league on Planet Cricket, and it was a great success.

We were one of the pre tournament favourites and glad we won it by showing our potential as a team. Bas de Leede watta show man. Almost everyone contributed for this successful campaign.
Thank you @Viper. for this great league, I hope there are many more to come from your end.
@ShamiLoverGlipGlops managed Hong Hong fabulously, great effort in taking Hong Hong to the finals in beating some very good sides.

Well played Netherlands. Our bowlers did not perform well in the finals but I am happy with the result seeing we lost our first 2 in a row. Great team, great tournament and great opponents.

Thank you @Viper. for this league. Love leagues based on Associates. Great job done!

Put your hands together if you're the Man of the Tournament- Bas de Leede, with 9 wickets and 143 runs, and a match-winning fifty in the final as well as the final-winning boundary, is the true and only candidate for this. As he is known for, he performed like a genuine all-rounder, tremendous with both bat and ball.

Oman's season started off in the best way, as they managed to defend their score in a thriller against UAE to give them a great start to the tourney, as batter Aqib Ilyas also top scored with a 64(39) in that game. But both the team and the player's performance only went downhill as they lost 3 matches on the trot and missed out on semi-final contention, while Ilyas also managed just 13 runs in the 3 games that came after. They were thrashed by Scotland and PNG for miserable scores, while they fought back much harder against Hong Kong to still fight out for a semi-final spot but ultimately lost it to another poor batting show, despite a good bowling fight-back. None of their batters were consistent, while among the bowlers, Sufyan Mehmood had a good day in the first game but only Bilal managed to consistently get wickets. A very bad campaign for the batsmen as for some reason they missed their star opener Jatinder Singh in their squad, and they didn't return the best results overall in the end.

7. Namibia :nam: @Neptune

Position:
4th Place, 2 pts (Group A)
Highest Runs :bat: : Gerhard Erasmus (99 runs in 4 innings, @ 24.75 @ 81.15)
Highest Wickets :bwl: : Ben Shikongo (7 wickets in 4 innings, @ 9.29 @ 6.5)

Namibia was another side which started off in a very favourable way that was a good win against Hong Kong to assert their dominance as one of the superior teams. Shikongo was brilliant with the ball and Baard and the batsmen batted well. But it all crashed from there, seeing them collapse in a chase against Nepal, then get outclassed by the Netherlands and then the UAE to ultimately finish last and out of contention completely for the semis, an upset considering their position in the associates hierarchy. The batters failed to maintain consistency, Davin's quick starts weren't enough and it ended with Erasmus anchoring for them to get them out of a deep situation twice in two games. Erasmus also starred with the ball with 6 wickets, but the rest were simply not consistent enough to help Namibia achieve up to their expectations.

6. Nepal :nep: @Disharies

Position:
3rd place, 2 pts (Group A)
Highest Runs :bat: : Kushal Malla (100 runs in 4 innings, @ 33.33 @ 97.09)
Highest Wickets :bwl: : Abinash Bohara (10 wickets in 4 innings, @ 8 @ 5.71)

Nepal started off losing to the eventual champions Netherlands but came back strong to beat the Namibians in a collapse that saw Abinash Bohara star with 4 wickets, who eventually finished the top wicket taker for Nepal with 10. But a shock-loss against Hong Kong where they were absolutely outplayed by a Shahid Wasif masterclass derailed their confidence as they also went on to lose to Scotland by a mere 2 runs which shut down their semi-final hopes and paved the way for Hong Kong to go in. Paudel and Malla did decently among the batters while Airee had a freak-cameo in the first game, while the bowlers were their bigger strength as Bohara and Karan the pace duo picked 18 wickets together under an economy of 6. They were so close to qualifying but they choked badly in their last game against Scotland in a low run chase which they ultimately should have won.

5. Scotland :sco: @Till Valhalla

Position:
3rd place, 4 pts (Group B)
Highest Runs :bat: : Brandon McMullen (110 runs in 4 innings, @ 27.5, @ 90.16)
Highest Wickets :bwl: : Safyaan Sharif (10 wickets in 4 innings, @ 9.6 @ 4.13)

Scotland started off their season in a disappointing manner as they gave away a game they should have won against PNG, who chased their total down with a wicket to spare despite their fighting performance with the ball. They hit back hard against Oman to thrash them by 57 runs which saw Sharif and co put on probably the best bowling performance of the tournament nearly bowling Oman out for a miniscule total. The confidence boost however couldn't help them overcome UAE to whom they lost badly by 40 runs, and a thrilling comeback win over Nepal by just 2 runs in their last game defending a low score followed that up and that summed up their roller-coaster of a season. Sadly in a group with 2 teams with 6 points, they couldn't finish high enough to qualify for the semi-finals. Cross and McMullen were their main men with the bat while the bowling was consistent overall with Sharif leading the pack with 10.

4. Papua New Guinea :png: @Neo 7

Position:
Semi Finalists, 2nd place, 6 pts (Group B)
Highest Runs :bat: : Tony Ura (116 runs in 5 innings, @ 23.2 @ 158.9)
Highest Wickets :bwl: : Norman Vanua (13 wickets in 5 innings, @ 8.31 @ 4.44)

PNG started off their tournament with pretty much the most tensing win they could expect as they managed to brush off Scotland by a wicket. But UAE absolutely thrashed them next game by 10 wickets leaving their confidence in the mud, but they beautifully recovered with two consecutive wins after that against Netherlands, the eventual champions and Oman, which rocketed them into Semi Final contention. Vanua was the star with the ball as he managed to grab 2 MOTMs in 2 games, as he and Soper were the fearsome pace duo with 23 wickets between them. Tony Ura was the aggressive batsman of the competition, striking at nearly 160 in a league where the average score was about 110. Their dream run only had to end as the Dutch took revenge for their group game loss in the Semi Finals knocking the Barramundis out from a position, they were by no means, favorites for. An overall satisfying finish for them.

3. United Arab Emirates :uae: @pillowprocter

Position:
Semi Finalists, 1st place, 6 pts (Group B)
Highest Runs :bat: : Muhammad Waseem (163 runs in 5 innings, @ 54.33 @ 148.18)
Highest Wickets :bwl: : Junaid Siddique (10 wickets in 5 innings, @ 11.9 @ 5.95) & Zahoor Khan (10 wickets in 5 innings, @ 14.1 @ 7.05)

UAE had a heartbreak to start their tournament as they fell short of Oman's score by just 4 runs despite Waseem's all-round show. They however only got better from there as the inclusion of Mustafa, among many other things, worked wonders for them as they went 3 in 3 which included two 10-wicket and 9-wicket wins. Clearly their openers were the backbone of their batting as Waseem and Usman Khan made over 300 runs combined in the competition, while up till the Semis, the pace duo of Zahoor and Siddique who finish with almost identical figures carried their bowling while the spinners kept the runs down. However things went wrong in the worst possible time in the semis as their gem of a pace unit failed and they eventually lost to Hong Kong in a chase where their openers also couldn't contribute as well as they did throughout, despite Meiyappan and the spinners' efforts with the ball.

2. Hong Kong :hkg: @ShamiLoverGlipGlops

Position:
Runners-up, 2nd place, 4 pts (Group A)
Highest Runs :bat: : Babar Hayat (144 runs in 6 innings, @ 24 @ 135.85)
Highest Wickets :bwl: : Nizakat Khan (10 wickets in 6 innings, @ 10.5 @ 5.25)

Hong Kong were the overperformers for sure, being in no means favorites from the start- lacking key players in Aizaz Khan, Haroon Arshad and the likes and going with an inexperienced junior side. Things didn't start off the best way as they lost against Namibia in the opener, and a very close defeat followed against eventual champions Netherlands to put their playoffs chances in jeopardy. But the inclusion of Shahid Wasif worked its magic as the man produced a masterclass down the order to win them an impossible game against Nepal, and that followed up by a win over Oman due to the confidence boost meant Hong Kong now qualified to the semi-finals as the second team from Group A despite only 2 wins in 4 games. Their batting was overall inconsistent, lead by captain Babar while the bowling worked wonders with Ghazanfar's short spells of terror and Ehsan and Nizakat's economical show. The semi-final against UAE was also a brilliant all-round performance which saw them make the final out of nowhere, but the Dutch batting seemed to really want to do the 2-0 over them in the final as their bowling crumbled and they missed out on the title. A true punch-above-their-weights season, to say the least.

1. Netherlands :ned: @Aravind.

Position:
Champions, 1st place, 6 pts (Group A)
Highest Runs :bat: : Colin Ackermann (160 runs in 6 innings, @ 32 @ 113.48)
Highest Wickets :bwl: : Bas de Leede (9 wickets in 6 innings, @ 11.89 @ 7.64) & Sybrand Engelbrecht (9 wickets in 6 innings, @ 11.78 & 4.64)

Probable favourites at the start, eventually the champions. Netherlands were the complete package. They began their season with a win against Nepal, then managed to just edge over their eventual finals opponents Hong Kong in the second game in a match that truly showcased their clutch with both bat and ball. A 3rd win followed as the heroics of Van der Gugten helped them thrash Namibia and book the first spot in the Semi-Finals. Only one bad day in their entire campaign was against PNG where the bowlers were ineffective and the top-order failed entirely. They avenged their defeat to PNG in the semis to enter the finals, where they again showcased their performance under pressure to overcome Hong Kong and do a double over them. De Leede was the all-round star with 9 wickets and 143 runs and the match-winning show in the final alongside Ackermann, while all the bowlers picked at least 5 wickets. They did not play star paceman Paul van Meekeren for a single game, while T20 specialist Glover, statistically the best bowler of the team was out of the squad entirely, yet they backed their decisions with performance and now they own the trophy.

Congrats to the champions and also Hong Kong for an incredible underdog run. Our batting just didnt click, 7th place is shambolic for a team with our quality
