New Zealand A v England XI - 4 day match - at Hagley Oval - 1991/2

Pitch:
27 - The wicket looks green and the groundsman reports problems in the preparation.
Just how these problems will affect the pace and bounce of the pitch remains to be seen but the chances are the bowlers will get considerable assistance late in the match.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: 6 - Green Wicket

Day 1 Weather: 4 - Cloudy, some sunny intervals

Injuries: R.A.Smith - Stomach Bug (miss 1 match) - D.R.Pringle - Septic Toe (miss 1 match)

Drawn

Man of the Match:
G.E.Bradburn

New Zealand A managed to draw a dull match which was ruined by rain after some good batting by allrounder Grant Bradburn on the final day.
Graeme Hick managed his highest score of a difficult tour with 74 before being unluckily run out and Martin Bicknell again bowled well but the match lacked outstanding individual performances.

Getting back into this, here are is the 1st innings report from the 5th and final Test between New Zealand and England at Napier.

Napier 2.jpg

New Zealand v England - 5th Test - at Napier - 1991/2

Pitch:
103 - This looks a good batting wicket and the batsmen should prosper for at least the first 3 days.
Thereafter the bowlers should begin to get some assistance, with the spinners expected to benefit most.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: 2 - Good Batting Wicket

Day 1 Weather: 2 - Hot and Sunny

Injuries: G.A.Hick - Thigh Strain (miss 1 match), K.R.Rutherford - Ankle Injury (miss 1 match), W.Watson - Hamstring Strain (miss 1 match)

New Zealand won the Toss and batted first on a Good Batting Wicket but were in early trouble after seamer Phil DeFreitas dismissed the openers cheaply.
New Zealand captain Martin Crowe then scored an excellent 192 to set up a big total as the England attack struggled with the flat pitch.
The home side were eventually all out at Lunch on Day 2 for 441 after Chris Lewis ran through to tail to finish with 4 wickets.

New Zealand v England - 5th Test - at Napier - 1991/2

England struggled in their reply to New Zealand's big first innings total and were in real danger of being asked to follow on before being rescued by Derek Pringle and Phil DeFreitas.
Both Pringle and DeFreitas posted half centuries to pass the follow on target and ease the pressure but in the end England still trailed by 139 about halfway through Day 3.
Allrounder Chris Cairns bowled well for the home side to take 4 wickets and offspinners Dipak Patel and Shane Thomson also bowled well to keep their team ahead.

New Zealand v England - 5th Test - at Napier - 1991/2

The New Zealand top order batted well to keep their side ahead eventually setting up a declaration halfway through Day 4 with a lead of 424.
England left arm spinner Phil Tufnell was the only bowler to trouble the New Zealand batsmen and he finished with 4 wickets to partially make up for a poor 1st innings performance.
England now need to score 425 to win or bat 130 overs to achieve a Draw to win the series, while New Zealand require 10 wickets to level the series at 1-1.

NEW ZEALAND TEST TOUR ASSESSMENT

Vastly disappointing to not see the series out. Don't think we bowled well enough throughout. Highlighted by the fact that only Chris Lewis (and the one test from Syd) produced a bowling average under 35.

While we had no debutants, we have seen a huge chunk of our batting order secured by players who should take us through most of the 90's. Robin Smith has secured the number 3/4 spot as he now averages over 50 in Tests. Meanwhile Mike Atherton & Nasser both made two big hundreds and have put their hands up to secure top 5 berths and if Jack Russell can keep batting like he has on this tour then there is a case to try and push him up to six.

Love those stats, Hick still struggling to come to terms with Test cricket and not deserving a spot yet after an ordinary tour.
Watkin had a tough tour but was still one of the more consistently threatening bowlers on some flat pitches, worth persisting with.

New Zealand A v England XI - 50 over match - at Hamilton - 1991/2

Pitch:
4 - Normal

Weather: 5 - Cloudy

Injuries: P.A.J.DeFreitas - Septic Toe (miss 1 match), P.C.R.Tufnell - Breach of Discipline In Team Hotel, Fined by Management (miss 1 match).

New Zealand A won by 98 runs

Man of the Match:
D.J.Nash

A breach of discipline by Phil Tufnell which resulted in a fine and a 1 game suspension seemed to unsettle the England XI as they suffered a heavy defeat to New Zealand A in a 50 over game at Hamilton.
Was Tufnell smoking drugs in the toilet? Sounds about right for Tuffers but we will never know.
The poor performance in this game, England's defeat in the 5th Test and Tuffers indiscretion has lead some in the media to suggest England's tour is beginning to fall apart.
Of the cricket played the outstanding performance was undoubtedly the fast medium bowling of New Zealand A bowler Dion Nash who set up an easy win with 5 wickets in an unbroken 8 over spell.
