They had to select Hardik, to accommodate him and his ego someone had to be sacrificed. India losing another trophy. Also what has Hardik done to be the VC?

To add what has Axar done this wc to get a place in the squad? We already have Jadeja and Kulcha.

Jadeja is the one I would have dropped. It doesn’t help that he’s being used to plug holes at random times in CSK but he’s never been a great T20I player anyways and with his injury record it’s time we started conserving him for the other two formats. Axar’s been the only DC bowler that has maintained a semblance of economy in this run fest of a tournament, would back him for that despite his meagre batting returns.

Chahal is another selection I’m befuddled with. He’s been proven to be found wanting against quality batters internationally time and again despite his great IPL returns. Is this a sign of a spin heavy attack? Not liking that we’ve got no batting depth in the lower order but I suppose it’s impossible to add to that given the usual suspects have all been lacklustre and the impact player rule has negated the need for it.

I guess other players he might be considered alongside have additional strings to their bow (keeping/medium pace) or act as like-for-like replacements for other players. Although I'd have picked him. The bowling looks like it might depend a lot on Bumrah and Kuldeep.

Rinku is the one bloke I would trust to be a middle order hitter who can be aggressive from ball one. There’s no other player in the selection pool that can do what he does and he’s done nothing wrong internationally to merit a drop. If the logic for Hardik is that he can’t be dropped on the basis of his role being indispensable and IPL form not mattering then why does Rinku get the axing?

Our white ball bowling has been poor for a while now in T20Is unfortunately. None of the recent U19 prospects have panned out well and that’s hurting us big time. The closest to a success story has been Arshdeep and he’s got his own issues.

What would be your XI

Think I posted mine a few pages ago with the caveat of certain players being undroppable.

Rohit
Kohli
/Jaiswal
SKY
Pant/Samson
Hardik
Rinku
Jadeja/Axar
Kuldeep
Bumrah
Siraj
Arshdeep/Natarajan

I’m not really surprised with the squad selection in all fairness, it has all the peak Dravid energy of conservatism. I’m not sure if there’s anything political about them either.

Why is Siraj in the team?

Who would you have picked?

TLDR: impact sub is having exactly the side-effect everyone predicted by not highlighting Indian all rounders.

I think, the squad, and what I imagine the XI to be, seems like it could have been picked 12 months ago it's so predictable. If Rohit and Kohli are available then they're going to get picked. I can't see them being dropped or moved on from. I'm not sure if the selectors/BCCI/coach whoever has the power/balls/desire to do so. That's two slots in the top 3 taken up.

I think they need two bowlers in the top 7 which leaves 5 batting spots, one which has to be a keeper. So you're left with 4 batting places.

SKY is obviously the GOAT.

That leaves one spot. Assume it'll be Jaiswal to open, unless they went with Kohli which would leave room in the middle order, then there would be room for Rinku, but they've picked Samson. He can keep and could potentially bat anywhere in the top 6 so it kind of makes sense in that regard. Also if they aren't 100% sure on Pant's fitness.

Seen a lot of people saying Axar and Hardik shouldn't be there, so did some diving. In the IPL there's five players who have faced and bowled 100 balls or more in the last two seasons (2023 and this one so far). Three are in the squad and the other two are Krunal and Shahbaz Ahmed.

There's absolutely no pressure on Hardik (Nitish Reddy maybe? Dube hasn't bowled) and not a great deal on the Jadeja or Axar. In my own little quick rankings those three came out on top anyway.

I reduced to 75 balls and there's nine Indian players with Abhishek, Harpreet Brar, Kuldeep and Ashwin entering that list of 'all rounders'.

Did the same for the last two seasons of The Hundred (which is shorter in duration and number of balls) and there's 11 English players at the 75 mark. That doesn't include Stokes, Jacks, Woakes, Rehan, Jordan, Dawson; plus Hartley, Archer, Rashid and Mark Wood who could probably match or exceed someone like Kuldeep with the bat given how many balls they'd be likely to face.

I still would've picked Rinku, ahead of Dube or Samson, but I get why they might see them as better fits given the make up of the squad.

Edit - The Hundred does only allow three overseas players which would mean domestic players get more opportunities.

India have gone with too many spinners in the squad. Rinku Singh should have been a shoo-in over Chahal or Jadeja. 4 spinners are not needed. From my ideal squad for them, I can see they have a batter less.

England should have picked Rehan Ahmed over Tom Hartley. What's the point of grooming and developing the youngster and playing him in bilaterals and not giving him the chance here? Sure he will be a backup. But he is a better option than Hartley. He is the one for the future.

Don't understand why England are still sticking with Chris Jordan. I'd pick any of Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton, Luke Wood or even John Turner over him. He has been poor for too long. Woakes was good against Windies.

South Africa should have picked Burger over Baartman, but I can understand why they'd want a death bowler specialist. Ferreira should have been around somewhere- very utility cricketer with 4D potential. Don't know why Fortuin (a 3rd pure spinner) was needed in the squad. Ferreira, Stubbs and Markram as part time options in addition to Shamsi and Maharaj would have sufficed.

Squad and new kit revealed.

Overall happy with the squad, no Bavuma and VD Dussen. Going to be interesting to see who opens the batting with QDK not finding form during the IPL.

My XI
  1. Ryan Rickelton
  2. Reeza Hendricks
  3. Aiden Markram
  4. Heinrich Klaasen
  5. David Miller
  6. Tristan Stubbs
  7. Marco Jansen
  8. KG Rabada
  9. Gerald Coetzee
  10. Anrich Nortje
  11. Tabraiz Shamsi
Keshav Maharaj is economical as ever, but he's not a wicket taker IMHO
Why would Quinton de Kock not start? It's between Rickelton and Hendricks for 1 spot imo.

Funniest part is that she’s a massive Kohli fan seeing some of her tweets. Can’t argue with Twitter stand though.

She’s targeting Rohit only. Kohli has an ICC World Cup trophy with 2011 WC. Rohit was not picked for 2011 WC and he considers it a ‘final frontier’ in his career.

Typical bcci bull crap let's jaiswal ahead of Gill

Siraj has been trash for RCB this year

Who would you have picked?
Avesh/ Natarajan

Siraj isn't a T20 bowler/limited overs bowler. Agree ,he was above par during the 50 over World Cup, but this has befuddled me. Can't bowl at the start, can't bowl at the end.

Our team doesn't look any different than the ones that played in earlier editions. Expecting another Semi/Final loss unless someone drastically chokes.

Rohit does have a T20 WC title to his name from 2007.

Can’t argue with Natarajan’s odd omission.

I think Siraj’s okay with the white ball but he’s been poor in this IPL. Difficult to judge anyone on the basis of the IPL given how weird it is.

I do have faith in Hardik being better in the WC if he regains confidence, he’s someone capable of rising to meet expectations when fit and confident. Something is bothering him in the IPL and it wouldn’t surprise me if the MI family isn’t as harmonious as it is portrayed to be. Having said that, it doesn’t matter if there’s no alternative to him if he performs like he’s doing in the IPL now. You’d be forced into dropping him regardless.

It’s weird that there haven’t been a lot of true all rounders, they’re the demographic I expected to see get hit the least by the impact sub. I assume teams are opting to play an overseas player for that role if they don’t have a very good domestic option.

India seems to have better on the typical slow nature of wickets in the Caribbean. This side would have been good for a 50 over CT or something, but they lack power makers, which, as we have seen, have become essential in today's environment.
