Can anyone stop New South Wales?
​

Four years. That's how long it is since New South Wales failed to win a World Championship match. In that time, they have dispensed with some of the biggest teams in the world. This year, they have no choice but to maintain that 100% record, as the slightest slip will knock them out of the tournament. In their way, the two other teams who have made the most appearances at the World Championship - Yorkshire and Transvaal - as well as a West Indian team short on match form but rich on talent. And we're back in Yorkshire again.

Team News

Yorkshire

It's been some time, but Yorkshire are back on top of the English game. They still have some of their biggest names: Tom Taylor, David Denton, Wilfred Rhodes, George Hirst and, of course, Schofield Haigh. They will be looking to atone for an embarrassing third place in 1903, but to better it they will have to get past a reasonably strong Transvaal team before likely meeting New South Wales in the final.

New South Wales

They have firmly established themselves as one of the greatest teams of all time. Not only that, but they keep producing young players; the latest off the production line is a youthful Charlie Macartney. He should strengthen that familiar batting line-up alongside the likes of Duff, Trumper, Noble and Mackay. However, there is a changing of the guard underway, and the departure of Syd Gregory, temporary or otherwise, may be a catalyst for change.

Transvaal

Transvaal are returning for the third consecutive year (although the absence of a Currie Cup competition this past winter means that a fourth is out of the question for the time being) and look stronger than ever. Their emerging star is Aubrey Faulkner, and he should combine with the likes of White, Hathorne, Schwarz and Sinclair to mount a genuine challenge for the title.

West Indians

The West Indians have not enjoyed a bountiful tour of England thus far, but there are signs of genuine talent in their ranks. All the same, it seems unlikely that this group of Barbadians, Guianians and Trinidadians will be able to properly mix it with the Nobles and Trumpers of this world when they face New South Wales in the first round. Whatever this result, the exposure can only be good for West Indian cricket.

Context
It's unquestionably an era of transition, but Yorkshire and New South Wales retain their big names.

Watch out for
Jim Mackay, Charlie Macartney and Aubrey Faulkner are a trio of talented young players.

Prediction
