NSW strong favourites for third title
​

Last year, New South Wales were so utterly dominant, and defeated Yorkshire so comprehensively, that their second World Title wasn't in doubt for a second. They may not have had the tournament's star man - Philadelphian all-rounder John Lester - but the form of Victor Trumper was more than enough to hammer opponents into submission. At first glance, they seem likely to do the same this year.

Middlesex

Competing in their first World Championship, Middlesex will be putting forward a strong challenge to reigning champions New South Wales. With the mystery spin of all-rounder "Bosie" Bosanquet, not to mention the talents of Albert Trott and Plum Warner, an in-tune Middlesex team could be a challenging proposition. They may only be second favourites, but they're not out of touch.

New South Wales

Holders of two titles already, it seems pretty likely that New South Wales will add a third to their trophy cabinet. Astonishingly, they've actually got stronger since the previous tournament; Tibby Cotter and Albert Bowden look to be strong additions to an already strong team. Add that to the returning class of Victor Trumper and Monty Noble, they look as close to unbeatable as any team ever has.

Transvaal

With South Africa back in the cricketing fold after the Boer War, Transvaal are here to play in their first World Championship tournament. They have numerous Test players in their side, none of higher class than Frank Mitchell, Reggie Schwarz and Gordon White. Rumours are, their wrist-spinners have been learning the Bosie's "Bosie", a leg-break which spins the wrong way somehow, and have started using it to great effects.

Context
New South Wales look invincible; Transvaal do not. Middlesex are one of a leading pack of county teams.
