I am sure everyone must be aware of what happened with Mr Jenkins on 5th July 09 at Wales during a cricket match. If not then you should see here.

Many times we can see that a batsman hits a straight drive strongly and it just passes very close to the umpires. Accidents can take place anytime and I think they should also have some protections or at least helmets.

"Umpires should wear helmets and should retire when they are near 60" - Asad Rauf (ICC Umpire , Pakistan)

To be honest, no I dont think so, these are freak accidents, if your gonna have the umpires wearing them why not have all the players wearing them aswell incase they get hit in the head? As much as I am sorry to hear that Jenko got hit in the head and passed away (R.I.P) it was a freak accident and probably happens to 1 in a million.

Sorry to bring it back into the world terms but we are so health and saftey aware soon people will be wearing knee and elbow pads with arm braces in case we go out just in case we fall over while walking.

EDIT:

This sums it up for me really,

BBC said:
Swansea Cricket Club chairman Steve Davies has not seen a similar incident in decades of playing cricket.

It's a freak accident.

Yes they should wear helmets....They can wear helmets which construction people wear or like Bikers covering their face as well....This way bowlers can escape bowling no balls and batsmen can get away with edges and LBWs and Umpires can be safe at the end of the day :banana2:banana2:banana2:banana2

make it optional , or design a very padded hat/cap which will at least soften the blow

Till time we have Dhoni, UV!, Yusuf, Gayle, Gibbs, Brendon. Let's make the umpires feel safe and secure on ground :D

They should wear helmets because these days batsman are ruthless hitters of the ball and the intensity of fielding and throwing is at a new level

They should not wear helmet if they will wear helmet will they will be able to move their head for noball, lbw, out, notout, how they will see wearing helmet its helmet not cap:p i dont think they shoud wear helmet yaa they can wear caps hard caps used in old days by cricketers

To the knowitalls who're saying "It was a freak accident", what's the problem with them having protection ? Prevention is better than hoping something doesn't happen. It's not like the umpires wearing some sort of protection can do anything bad to the game.

They should wear one in T20 matches as the pace and intensity at which the game is played, the pitch is not a safe place for an umpire to be without any protection.

Freak accidents happen and if we did something after every single one that happened.. we probably would be going around in bubbles as to make sure we dont fall over while we walk..

The fact it hit him on the back of the head is what seriously killed him.. and no offence to the poor lad but if the ball is still in play he should probably be looking or keeping an eye on where the ball is.

No helmets required for Umpires on field. Only protection required off field if they have any stamina left.

Don't be silly ofcourse they don't need helmets it was just a tragic accident.
