Jacques Kallis to retire from Test cricket

Would have rather have him retire from odi cricket and continue with tests.

Please no thami to replace him in the side...:(

Jacques is the greatest performer that my generation of fans have had the pleasure to watch in action. I rate him better than Sachin at test level. His bowling and exceptional ability as a slipper makes him the MVP over the last fifteen years. Cricket has lost a lot of greats recently and I hope the next generation can fill in the gaping void of class.

So, Dravid, VVS, Ponting, Hussey, Tendulkar and now Kallis. Really sad to think of cricket without these great names. As samiullah said, we can only hope that the next generation can take cricket to greater heights. Without getting into any debate as to who the best of the generation was, Kallis`s numbers just blow you away. To have taken close to 500 wickets in all international cricket to go with 10k runs in either form as well as all those catches is pure genius. Another one of his kind cricketer without whom the game will definitely be poorer.

Also, a very gentle mannered performer with hardly any blemishes! A true all-time great.

Yes i can see why you would have this concern. The quota issue remains. However if S Africa want to have 5 bowlers and a spinner in the future, i reckon Ryan McClaren now may finally get deserved run in the test side.

Really sad to hear the news this morning. He was my favorite cricketer since the 90s along with steve waugh. If i ever tried to emulate someone while playing, it was this guy. Critics will keep saying craps about him like they do for everyone else including sachin, lara or ponting, but in a few years he will get his due recognition. Sadly we do not appreciate the value of someone until he is long gone and tend to make glamorize past players instead like they used to be superhumans. Just looking at the stats, a batting average that is better than sachin, lara and ponting while being a frontline allrounder is STAGGERING. Not sure if that is not the definition of superhuman, what is!!

Long live the King Kallis :)

Two more centuries please :)

Really disappointed to wake up to such sad news. Its heart warming to see Kallis is really interested in representing the 2015 world cup for his country, so most probably the only legend of my era who will be playing in that world cup. Kallis has got 199 catches, only behind Rahul, hope Kallis takes at least one more catch and completes the 200 catches as a non keeper. Also he is 8 wickets less than 300 victims, though the number is not really important to rate the legend, i certainly hope he has 8 scalps in the test match and reaches the number. I always wanted my team India to win in SA, but now i don't mind SA winning if Kallis is going to take 8 wickets in the match and score a hundred and sign out on a high. I was not fortunate enough to see Sir Gary Sobbers play but i am fortunate enough to be born in the era of Jack Kallis. Love you Kallis.

He really is one of the greatest all rounders of all time and I'm just glad that I got to see so much of him in action. It's no great surprise though. I think the one thing he has left to achieve is winning a World Tournament, so that's why the World Cup means so much to him. He couldn't have carried on playing Tests and being rested for ODIs and still get in the side, so it's the right decision. Good luck to him.

This is really sad news. I would rather wish to see him in test, interesting. He is one of the legends, and a real asset for SA! If Bevan is remembered as inspiring model for match winning, Kallis will be remembered for a genuine all rounder in the books for future generations.

So this leaves only Chanderpaul to keep going from the classy era of players with other legends now retired.

As if the momentum from arguably the greatest draw in the history of the game wasn't enough, now South Africa have the good send off to play for, expecting a real ass whipping at Durban.

Kallis is one of the finest this game has seen. Being a Sachin fan, I always had fears from this elegant batter of matching maestro's Test match statistics.
I have not seen a complete cricketer like Kallis in my era. Game is now short of a genuine cricketer who can still go strong.

Salute the Legend!!!

Aggression. Determination. Talent. Hardwork.
Kallis has defined everything that South African Cricket has stood for. Hope he gets a well deserved farewell. The best takes a bow.
All the best for the ODIs, Jacques.

Smart move as he wants to play in the 2015 world cup but it's sad to see him leave the test arena. One of the best allrounders ever, played the game with grace and at his best, just a wonderful batsman.

At least we still have the pleasure of watching him in ODIs.

The best cricketer of his generation. Pleasure to have witnessed it all!

Almost hope he bows out with a World Cup winning 100 and 5fer. Assuming England stutter out at the group stages of course.

A bit weird, really. he never seemed to get anywhere near the plaudits the other top players of his era did.

yet his record is second to none of them. I guess he wasn't very aesthetically pleasing and was very unromantic
