Cricket Australia has confirmed it is exploring the possibility of trialling day-night Test cricket matches.

CA chief executive James Sutherland said the idea was being considered in order to "meet consumer demand" and "satisfy, if not fuel" interest in the game.

"We are tossing it around and working out the fundamentals," Sutherland told The Australian.

Interesting article.

Personally I am a bit of a "pursit". Not the biggest fan of Twenty20 and test matches should be played in the day. I believe, yes it is important to attract new fans but we should be trying to get the actual fans to the cricket first.

You can't have day night test matches since you won't be able to see the red lights and the last time I checked you weren't allowed to use the flood lights not that they make any difference. Don't know what they're think to be honest.

Well they said they (as in Cricket Australia) could try out different colour balls.

Pink balls?:p

A pink ball has actually been made and it is going to be tested in one dayers in England in the future: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/7092114.stm

I suppose what they are saying is when someone comes home from school or work and switches on the TV the cricket will be on and it wont have been going for very long, so they will be interested in watching it.

Its not a very good idea in my opinion. Tests have been played 11.00am-6.00pm for centuries, they dont need to change it now.

The charm of Test cricket is that it's played in daylight.

Besides, since the format of Test cricket is 3 sessions, I don't think it'll work out properly in terms of time management and I disagree with the concept of splitting up the sessions between daylight and artificial lights.

Then bring in the whole dew and twilight factor? Defiantly don't let this happen.

Most of the time, days finish early coz they give the batsmen light anyway.

Yes, unless you want to start well past dark (around 8 or 9 pm) and then it would go on to midnight or past midnight which is not feasible.

Personally the only thing I think that should be fixed is the fact that we have to miss play due to bad light. We should try and avoid delays as much as possible. However, I think that day-night tests are a stupid idea, let ODI and T20 have their nighttime fun and keep tests the way that they are.

The good thing about this is it will attract much bigger crowds. I think that's the main reason crowds are down all over the world. Because people are working, kids are going to school, so they can't go and watch the cricket. Hence the poor tv ratings and crowds. Good idea, but just have to figure out this read ball.

Man how many people watch Day Night ODIs?

Ans: Makes no diffrence the same in Day game.

Too much tradition would be broken to do this. First having night matches and then the ball could would need to be changed.
