The bowling is very similar to Ashes/DBC 17 and not like DBC 14. IMO the biggest improvement in this iteration has been on the batting side of things and addition of Scenario mode. Plus you have more customization options and more variety in edges.

You can always alter the slider setting for the same. The default slider setting for playing late is set to 100 and you can try changing it to 80 or lower instead of tweaking the Max Speed setting (pace increase).
Ironically in the odis the AI often puts fields with only 2 men on the boundary even though you could be 180/2 and scoring at will. The logic to select the right AI fields, and field sets in general, is something that needs work. It's better than Ashes Cricket but still needs a lot of improvement.
