In conjunction with WCC, the Commonwealth Games Federation will organize a cricket tournament at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
This will be the first time cricket is played at a Commonwealth Games. It will also be the first time T20 cricket is recognized as an official third cricket format.
2002 COMMONWEALTH GAMES
The 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester featured an 8-team cricket tournament conducted at the Commonwealth Games for the first time ever.
Tournament matches were played in a newly debuted 20-over format, and had 'T20I' status, completely separate from the 50-over ODIs.
The qualifying route to the tournament however, was still the World ODI Rankings as there was no rankings system in place for T20I cricket at the time.
As per the rankings, teams from the Top-8 Commonwealth nations took part in the tournament. England as hosts, received a direct entry regardless of their rank.
Vanuatu defeated Niue in the tournament final, as a result of which, the former won gold and the latter won silver for cricket.
South Africa defeated Canada in a 3rd-place playoff to secure bronze. Niue's Talaititama Holo was adjudged Player of the Tournament.
