Teams
In September, the Asian Confederation of Nations confirmed the participation of ten Full Member ASCON nations for the third edition of the ASCON Asia Cup. Defending champions India will not be participating following their withdrawal from ASCON.
At the time of the group draw, China were the best-ranked Asian team according to the World ODI Rankings, being ranked 15th in the world.
Outside of India, all nations that took part in the 2001 Asia Cup will be participating in this year's edition. In addition Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kazakhstan and Palestine will be making their Asia Cup debut.

Draw
For the first time in ASCON history a proper draw was hosted for the group stage and was held at the Shaanxi Great Hall in Xi'an, China on September 3rd. The ten ASCON full members were divided into two pots of 5 depending on their position within the World ODI Rankings. China as the host nation was automatically given position A1 while Palestine, who had yet to play in a WCC recognized ODI and thusly wasn't on the World ODI Rankings was automatically given position B5. Drawing started with pot 1 with the first two teams drawn being given positions A2 and A3 with the remaining teams being assigned positions B1 and B2. The first two teams drawn from pot 2 were given positions A4 and A5 while the remaining two teams were given positions B3 and B4.

TOURNAMENT RULES
These were the rules set in place by the Asian Confederation of Nations for the Asian Cup.
Upgrades
Squads
Each participating member nation was required to name a 15-player squad at the start of the tournament.
No upgrades could've been spent to improve players mid-tournament; upgrades need to be made during squad announcement.
Lineups
Playing XIs were required to contain at least one capable wicket-keeper (
//) and six bowling (//) options.
Format
The ten participants were split into two groups of five where they played each nation in their group - once.
Top-two nations from Group A and Group B will advance to the semi-finals with the winners of each game playing the final.
Knockouts of Asian Cup 2002 are scheduled to be played in three of the four venues hosting the tournament.
Points System
Points were awarded using the following system during the group stage:
Win: 3 points / Tie: 2 points / N/R: 1 point / Loss: 0 points
Player Injuries
Injuries were randomly simulated to give this league somewhat of a realistic edge.
Players that play without a rest were more likely to get injured.
Following were the types of injuries:
Degree 1
* Can play with a 25% ratings decrease; 50% chance of developing a Degree 2 injury
- Heals fully after a one-game rest
Degree 2
* Can play with a 50% ratings decrease; 75% chance of developing a Degree 3 injury
- Heals fully after a two-game rest
Degree 3
* Out for one game; instantly made unavailable
- Can play one game early with a 50% ratings decrease upon return. Heals fully after a two-game rest.
Degree 4
* Out for two to three games; instantly made unavailable
- Can play one game early with a 25% ratings decrease upon return. Heals fully after a three-game rest
