What a start to the test for South Africa. They have scored a mammoth total. But is it only the pitch that is helping the batsmen? They started off yesterday slow but good. They then raised the run rate slowly. Gibbs and Boucher really took on the bowlers and Gibbs played the innings of his life.
First batsman to go was Shaun Pollock. He tried a risky second run and came off second in a race between the ball. He played well and quick but will be disappointed not to get more runs
Then Hall went first ball! Great catch by Gilchrist as Hall tried to drive the ball that was spinning the other way for Cullen
Gibbs continued his brilliance and smashed a brilliant unbeaten score and smashed as quickly as he could.
Ntini came in and played a wonderful cameo. But most importantly he gave Gibbs most of the strike. Some good boundaries also cam from Ntini and now he just has to perform with the ball.
The scorecard looks like this at the end of the innings and the bowling figures
Can South Africa strike early or can Australia return the favour? Stay tuned for more action from The Wanderers.
End of innings interview with Ricky Ponting
Geoff Boycott had achat withRicky Pontingat the end of the innings.
GB: Hi Ricky how are you?
RP: Hi mate I?m good.
GB: So how do things look for Australia in this match?
RP: Not too bad. If we can build a good partnership up front we could get a challenging score.
GB: What are your comments on Dennis Lillee?s interview?
RP: Dennis can say what he wants. He was a great player but I think he should keep his nose out of our business.
GB: Why didn?t you bowl Warne so much?
RP: I didn?t want to tire him and wear him down.
GB: Thanks Ricky and enjoy your day?
RP: Thanks mate.
GB: Can Australia match South Africa?s score? Find out after the break.
Wow! Major problems for Australia. Ntini simply ripped through the top, middle and lower order to put South Africa in a sure to win position. Not 1 of the Australians looked good exept Ponting. The left handers all played down the wrong line and all got bowled.
First to go was Langer bowled Ntini. He totally miss judged the ball and bang went his leg stump!
Soon after Hayden also lost his leg stump and Australia were in trouble. This time Pollock did the damage.
Michael Clarke and Ponting had to steady the ship and were looking good until Clarke tried a shot of the back foot that didn?t pay off and he was caught
Martyn didn?t last long when he came in. Another back foot shot and another wicket for Ntini. Brilliant catch by Smith.
Katich played a horrible shot and was also bowled by Ntini. Ntini was on fire
Pollock grabbed his second of the day. It was the huge important wicket of Ponting. Ponting was really looking solid and looked to cause trouble for South Africa. But 1 ball Pollock bowled fuller than the other and Ponting tried to play it to the leg side of his back foot.
Johan van der Wath got his first wicket in test match cricket by bowling the dangerous Gilchrist for a duck! Same shot as all the left handers played and also same result
Cullen looked good on debut but a big nick to 3rd slip Jacques Kallis saw him back in the pavilion. Ntini got his five wickets.
Bracken was Ntini?s sixth and last victim. Also caught of a great catch by the gully. Another duck for Australia.
Last man to go was by means of a run out. Shane Warne tried a quick single but ended of second best against the mid off fielder. He got the 3rd highest score.
The sorrow scorecard of Australia and the bowling figures of South Africa
South Africa have enforced the follow on and Australia have to get a huge opening partnership to come anywhere close to simply draw this test.
