Third Quarter
So both teams come out from the half time break, and both teams will be looking for a good start to the third term. I know it's only the preseason, but the third quarter is known as the Premiership quarter, so the team that gets in-front, should go on to win the match.
The balls bounced down by the umpire, and the Demons get the clearence forward. It's locked in the Demons forward 50, and doesn't leave for a couple of minutes. Good forward pressure from the Demons forwards, locks the ball into their 50. Finally a shot comes out of the back, but it was hurried and only a behind score by Nathan Jones who has been very quiet in this game up to date.
Still after the behind, the Demons put on similar pressure to the Geelong defenders, and they can't get a clean possession out of defence. Nathan Jones has another shot on goal, but it was wayward and went out of bounds on the full, while Brad Miller has a shot of his own, and it was wayward, and just sneaking in for a behind. Some bad kicking their from the Demons, could see them a lot closer on the scoreboard.
Woeful Demons in-front of goal
Some poor shots on goal from the Demons, but their pressure inside their forward 50 was exceptional, and wasn't allowing the Geelong defenders to get the ball outside of the 50. Cale Morton comes running through the pack, and steals a handball from Matthew Scarlett, and found a little bit of space where he got his foot to the ball, and kicks a beautiful goal. After those 3 attempts at goal, the Demons finally break through.
The crowd started to find their voice, very little of them down in the goal square for the Demons, and after the goal was kicked, moves started to get made, Brent Moloney was sent into defence and stood next to Steve Johnson, while Colin Garland who had played on Johnson in the first half, went down forward, and stood at Center Half Forward.
Geelong however wasn't going to lay down, and with Jimmy Bartel receiving the handball from Johnson, and running in a kicking a beautiful goal, it was the second goal for Bartel, and Geelong then extend the margin.
Geelong had all the momentum now, and was playing some good footy, going forward again, and when James Kelly marked just 15 meters out, it looked to be a certain goal for the Cats, but in-accuracy hurt Kelly and he misses from 15 out.
As Geelong started to get more of the footy, the Demons had to move Colin Garland back onto Stevie Johnson, as Johnson started to look more dangerous up in the forward line.
Even though the Cats had more of the ball then the Demons in this first quarter, Geelong was letting themselves down with their accuracy in-front of goal, with Kelly missing from 15 meters out, and nnow having a shot on the run from 40 meters out, Kelly misses again.
James Kelly is starting to get under the radar of the Demons
Shannon Byrnes however grabbed the ball from a pack, and quickly threw the ball onto his boot and kicked a beautiful snap goal.
The Demons had to reduce the margin before the scoreboard got away from them, and with the speed and exceleration of Aaron Davey running into an open goal and kicks his 3rd goal from 30 meters out.
The contest then started to get a bit more tougher and players started to put their head down and playing some hard footy, Jarred Rivers had to come off the ground and one stage of the quarter with a blood rule for putting his head down.
And with the quarter winding down, Brad Green finds the footy right on the boundary line after taking the grab. The siren sounds, and he is on the wrong side for a left footer. But the veteran knows how to kick a goal in the right time, keeping the Demons in the match at the end of the third quarter.
Geelong: 2.2 - 8.4 - 10.10. (70)
Melbourne: 1.5 - 5.5 - 8.7. (55)
Geelong
Goal Kickers: Byrnes -2, Stokes -2, Bartel -2, Johnson -2, Lonergan -1, Mooney -1
Top Possesions: Bartel -23, Johnson -20, Wojcinski -19
Player to Watch: Steve Johnson started to have more of an impact in that quarter. Colin Garland was moved forward by coach Hayden, which made Moloney had to man up the speeester from Geelong, and it was a handful for Moloney, as Johnson started to get more of the footy up in the midfield. Needs to be stopped this quarter for Melbourne to have any chance in winning this match.
Melbourne
Goal Kickers: Davey -3, Morton -1, Sylvia -1, Dunn -1, Johnson -1, Green -1
Top Possesions: Bruce -27, Grimes -27, Green -26
Player to watch: Jack Grimes has been playing mainly at full back if you can call it on Shannon Byrnes, and even though Byrnes has kicked 2 goals for the Cats, you would have to be impressed with the ball winning skills of young Grimes in his second season of footy. 27 possesions with a quarter to go, and has kept Byrnes rather quiet throughout the whole match. Grimes is going to have a big say in wether Melbourne will win this match or not.
