Third Quarter

So both teams come out from the half time break, and both teams will be looking for a good start to the third term. I know it's only the preseason, but the third quarter is known as the Premiership quarter, so the team that gets in-front, should go on to win the match.
The balls bounced down by the umpire, and the Demons get the clearence forward. It's locked in the Demons forward 50, and doesn't leave for a couple of minutes. Good forward pressure from the Demons forwards, locks the ball into their 50. Finally a shot comes out of the back, but it was hurried and only a behind score by Nathan Jones who has been very quiet in this game up to date.
Still after the behind, the Demons put on similar pressure to the Geelong defenders, and they can't get a clean possession out of defence. Nathan Jones has another shot on goal, but it was wayward and went out of bounds on the full, while Brad Miller has a shot of his own, and it was wayward, and just sneaking in for a behind. Some bad kicking their from the Demons, could see them a lot closer on the scoreboard.

157387.jpg

Woeful Demons in-front of goal

Some poor shots on goal from the Demons, but their pressure inside their forward 50 was exceptional, and wasn't allowing the Geelong defenders to get the ball outside of the 50. Cale Morton comes running through the pack, and steals a handball from Matthew Scarlett, and found a little bit of space where he got his foot to the ball, and kicks a beautiful goal. After those 3 attempts at goal, the Demons finally break through.
The crowd started to find their voice, very little of them down in the goal square for the Demons, and after the goal was kicked, moves started to get made, Brent Moloney was sent into defence and stood next to Steve Johnson, while Colin Garland who had played on Johnson in the first half, went down forward, and stood at Center Half Forward.

Geelong however wasn't going to lay down, and with Jimmy Bartel receiving the handball from Johnson, and running in a kicking a beautiful goal, it was the second goal for Bartel, and Geelong then extend the margin.
Geelong had all the momentum now, and was playing some good footy, going forward again, and when James Kelly marked just 15 meters out, it looked to be a certain goal for the Cats, but in-accuracy hurt Kelly and he misses from 15 out.
As Geelong started to get more of the footy, the Demons had to move Colin Garland back onto Stevie Johnson, as Johnson started to look more dangerous up in the forward line.
Even though the Cats had more of the ball then the Demons in this first quarter, Geelong was letting themselves down with their accuracy in-front of goal, with Kelly missing from 15 meters out, and nnow having a shot on the run from 40 meters out, Kelly misses again.

180639.jpg

James Kelly is starting to get under the radar of the Demons

Shannon Byrnes however grabbed the ball from a pack, and quickly threw the ball onto his boot and kicked a beautiful snap goal.
The Demons had to reduce the margin before the scoreboard got away from them, and with the speed and exceleration of Aaron Davey running into an open goal and kicks his 3rd goal from 30 meters out.
The contest then started to get a bit more tougher and players started to put their head down and playing some hard footy, Jarred Rivers had to come off the ground and one stage of the quarter with a blood rule for putting his head down.
And with the quarter winding down, Brad Green finds the footy right on the boundary line after taking the grab. The siren sounds, and he is on the wrong side for a left footer. But the veteran knows how to kick a goal in the right time, keeping the Demons in the match at the end of the third quarter.

Geelong: 2.2 - 8.4 - 10.10. (70)
Melbourne: 1.5 - 5.5 - 8.7. (55)

Geelong
Goal Kickers: Byrnes -2, Stokes -2, Bartel -2, Johnson -2, Lonergan -1, Mooney -1
Top Possesions: Bartel -23, Johnson -20, Wojcinski -19

Player to Watch: Steve Johnson started to have more of an impact in that quarter. Colin Garland was moved forward by coach Hayden, which made Moloney had to man up the speeester from Geelong, and it was a handful for Moloney, as Johnson started to get more of the footy up in the midfield. Needs to be stopped this quarter for Melbourne to have any chance in winning this match.

Melbourne
Goal Kickers: Davey -3, Morton -1, Sylvia -1, Dunn -1, Johnson -1, Green -1
Top Possesions: Bruce -27, Grimes -27, Green -26

Player to watch: Jack Grimes has been playing mainly at full back if you can call it on Shannon Byrnes, and even though Byrnes has kicked 2 goals for the Cats, you would have to be impressed with the ball winning skills of young Grimes in his second season of footy. 27 possesions with a quarter to go, and has kept Byrnes rather quiet throughout the whole match. Grimes is going to have a big say in wether Melbourne will win this match or not.

Last Quarter

So this was it, this was the start of the last quarter, and even though this is a NAB Cup contest, it was still an exciting finish to a game, with a team like Melbourne who finished 16th last season playing against Geelong, the team that won the Premiership last season.
So the quarter got under way, and the Demons get the clearance and head forward. A beautiful mark from Colin Sylvia right in-front of goal and here is the chance to kick the first goal of the quarter and the chance to put the Demons just 9 points down. Sylvia kicks it beautifully and goes straight through the middle of the big sticks, the Demons kick the first of the quarter, and are now only 9 points behind the Cats.
With the goal, the Demons would now have their backs up and now have some momentum with the last goal of the third quarter and the first goal of the last quarter. However, a big hit on star defender, Jack Grimes, from Corey Enright, saw the play held up and the stretcher to be taken out. Not a good sign here for the Demons, and the youngster Jack Grimes.

201768.jpg

Bad news for Youngster Jack Grimes coming off the ground with concussion

Jack Grimes came off the ground on the stretcher which looked like he was concussed and may not return to the field anytime soon, let's hope it's nothing too serious for the youngster.
After the big hit on Jack Grimes, things started to heat up a little, and both teams were going hard at the football. A great passage of play and pressure from both sides, this game was certainly on now. Although Geelong somehow found a way forward, and Tom Lonergan who started in defence, found himself in the forward line and found himself kicking a goal which gave a little bit of breathing space for the Cats and a crucial goal at this stage of the game.
Jimmy Bartel who has had a good game so far has got under the radar from the Demons again and has snuck forward and taken a good grab just 20 meters out. Bartel kicks his third goal, defeintly not known as a forward, but has gotten under the Demons radar this afternoon.

With the Cats just starting to get a hold of the Demons, the Demons kick forward and veteran, Cam Bruce takes a solid mark. He need's a cool head here, but can't connect with the ball well, and a behind only, the Demons really needed that one. With that miss from Bruce, Geelong rebounded from defence and went into their forward 50, without the Demons even touching the football, and Steve Johnson may have sealed the match with a beautiful snap around the body that bounced through the goals, that could be the match!!
However the Demons wouldn't give up that easily, and won the clearance and another good mark from Cam Bruce inside the forward 50. But another terrible kick from the veteran, another behind for the Demons, they should have been 2 goals closer to the Cats and we should have a closer game then we have now.
The kick out from the Cats was also gonna be under pressure, and it sure was when the ball was punched down and kicked back into the 50 for the Demons when their new recruit, Joel MacDonald took the mark right on the paint. It would have to take his best effort to kick a goal from here, but he hooked it and another behind only.

201104.jpg

Joel MacDonald is dissapointed with his goal kicking in this last term

The Demons were attacking, but they were running out of time here, and another turnover from the kick in resulted in Brad Green, the best kick in the Melbourne team, running into an goal, but was under a lot of pressure, and another behind from the boot of Brad Green, the Demons with their 4th consecutive behind in this quarter.
Surprisingly, the Demons had a good story on their hands with Jack Grimes who was knocked out and taken off the ground earlier in the quarter on a stretcher, came back onto the field with about 5 minutes to go, which you would think is a stupid idea, but you know now that the Demons are desperate to beat the Cats and know they have a chance, bringing their best player of the day back onto the field after just 15 minutes ago he had been knocked out. Interesting decision from the Demons, but maybe the right one.
However, the Cats went forward while Grimes was coming back onto the field, and a long ball was sent into the forward line, and a solid grab was taken by Corey Enright in the 5 meter square. A certain goal and this was the end of the game, with Enright kicking the goal, Geelong by 30 points and that was the sealer. Well that was the end of the scoring, but bad news for the Demons, with Joel MacDonald comes limping off the ground with what seems to be a pretty bad knee injury.
And their goes the siren for the end of the contest, a win to the Cats, but a very competitive effort from the Demons.

Geelong: 2.2 - 8.4 - 10.10 - 14.11 - (95)
Melbourne: 1.5 - 5.5 - 8.7 - 9.11 - (65)

Geelong
Goal Kickers: Bartel -3, Johnson -3, Byrnes -2, Longergan -2, Stokes -2, Enright -1, Mooney -1
Top Possesions: Bartel -30, Ablett -29, Wojcinski -28, Johnson -26

Melbourne
Goal Kickers: Davey -3, Sylvia -2, Green -1, Johnson -1, Morton -1, Dunn -1
Top Possesions: Bruce -37, Grimes -31, Green -31, Garland -29

Venue: Skilled Stadium (25,364)

Injuries: Demons: Joel MacDonald - Left knee (6 weeks)

Melbourne certainly didn't shame themselves. Good to see Grimes getting amongst it for 31 touches. The future looks bright for the Dees.

Monday, March 10th
Etihad Stadium

So it was the Western Bulldogs and the Carlton Blues fighting it out in this year's NAB Cup competition, and it was the Western Bulldogs, who many have tipped for the Flag in 2010, that got the chocolates, and fairly comfortably against the Blues, winning. Bulldogs: 17.22.124 to the Blues: 4.8.32.

6 goals from the star recruit Full Forward for the Bulldogs in Barry Hall, in a star studded performance to lead his side into some silerware. Brad Johnson, the veteran also contributed well with the big guy up in the forward line, with himself kicking 3 goals, while young forward, Christian Howard kicked 2 goals as did Robert Murphy. The Bulldogs had targuably their best side on the park, apart from the youngster, Howard who made his debut.

Carlton on the other hand played well in the NAB Cup competition, but when things got tough and serious, they couldn't find the tank to go with the Bulldogs. The Blues couldn't find a multiple goal scorer, with Chris Yarran, Jeff Garlett, Kade Simpson and Ryan Houlihan all kicking the single goal for the Blues. Chris Judd was kept quiet, only having the 13 possessions, and the Blues had 3 debutants, Levi Casboult, Marcus Davies and Robert Warknock played his first game for the club.

Hawthorn who have some new recruits to their team, while the Demons who had a good NAB Cup competition, taking it up to the Cats who are the bench mark of the competition.

Hawthorn have added some talent to their 2010 team list. Joshua Gibson from the Kangaroos has come into the side to bolster the Hawks defence, and with Trent Croad in the side, that back line is starting to look settled. Shaun Burgoyne comes to the side with some talent coming across from Port Adelaide after his brother reteired at the end of last season. And young Jarryd Morton comes into the side to bolster the speed of the midfield for the Hawks, and i would like to see the young players to get some more game time and bring out what they've got.

First Quarter

So here we go, the first match of the 2010 season for these 2 teams gets underway, and going by last year's results, the odds are all looking towards a Hawthorn victory here this afternoon. So the quarter got underway, and it wasn't too long until the first score was on the board, and it came through a behind for the Demons.
The Demons are looking good in the first period of this first quarter, their pressure on the Hawthorn defenders have been arguably the best they have seen it for the past few years, no one could get a clean possession out on the ground at the moment.

With the ball just going up and down the field at the moment, and no team scoring any goals within the first 10 minutes, it has been some great hard football from both teams, however, things look brink for the Demons with Jack Watts limping off the ground with what looks to be a ankle injury, we will have to keep an eye on Watts and his injury, but it doesn't look too serious for now.
With Watts now coming off the ground, the Hawks got the spread forward, and Clinton Young waltzes in and kicks the first goal of the game, 10 minutes into the first quarter.

184040.jpg

A very good goal from Clinton Young who had struggles over the past year with some niggling injuries, but it's good to see the defender back in action and scoring the first goal of the match. However, a quick reply from the Demons went they went forward, and it was their live wire, Aaron Davey that kicked their first goal of the season with a splended run inside the forward 50 and straightning up and slotting a goal.
So in quick concession, without a goal in the first 10 minutes of the quarter, 2 quick goals have been scored, and when the Hawks went forward, and their star forward, Buddy Franklin took a good grab against Colin Garland, the third concecutive goal was kicked in concession. The Hawks leading now by 5 points, it's goal for goal and we have a wonderful contest on our hands here.
The Hawks were 5 points in front in a see-sawing contest, but when Jordan Lewis scored a long goal from 47 meters out, it was the first time a team scored consecutive goals for the teams, and it was the Hawks who got the early break.

The Hawks are now 11 points in front of the Demons and maybe this is the start they needed to keep the loosing streak for the Demons going. However in saying that, Daniel Bell runs through the middle of the ground, handballs off to Cam Bruce, who handballs back to Bell, and Bell runs to 53 meters out and steers through a WONDERFUL goal, the Demon fans are on their feet, and now it's the Hawks by 5 points, what a wonderful first quarter we have so far witnessed.

Hawthorn
Goal Scorers: Lewis -1, Young -1, Franklin -1
Top Possesion: Brown -8, Franklin -7, Gibson -7, Burgoyne -7

Player to Watch: Joshua Gibson: The recruit from North Melbourne has shown some good signs in this first quarter. Gibson has been playing on the Centre Half Forward, Matthew Bate, while Gibson has run riot in the first term, 7 possessions, Matthew Bate has struggled only having the 3 touches, and more importantly, hasn't troubled on the scoreboard. Gibson has only kicked the footy the 1 time, and the rest of his touches have been handballs, but the ability to get the ball out of the contest, Gibson looks comfortable in defence for the Hawks

melbourne_demons__71939.gif

Melbourne

Goal Scorers: Davey -1, Bell -1
Top Possesions: Green -8, Bruce -7, Garland -7, Bennell -7

Player to watch: Jamie Bennell: Bennell has been good in the midfield. One of these young Demons that have big aspects for the 2010 season. Bennell used the football well in that first quarter having 5 kicks and the 2 handballs. Bennell also with his pressure on the Hawthorn forward line, with Bennell helping out in defence as much as possible, has also had the 3 rebounds from 50, he has been very good in this first quarter.

Second Quarter

After a very entertaining and tight first quarter, the second quarter get's underway, with both teams looking to get on top and be ahead at the half time break. It was the Hawks however that scored first, through their tall Center Half Forward in Jarryd Roughead. Roughead scored his first goal of the match, out marking Jared Rivers in a one on one contest which resulted in the goal, and put the Hawks 12 points in front.
Such the dominance of Cameron Bruce, the Hawks had to put their best player to try and shut Bruce down, Luke Hodge, stood side by side with Bruce after the Roughead goal, and everybody knew we were in for a great one on one contest.

201081.jpg
Luke Hodge try's to break through the Demons attack

The Melbourne forward line had been exellent in the NAB Cup competition, however, Campbell Brown has been right on top of the Melbourne attack this afternoon. Brown is playing on Aaron Davey who is the Demons live wire up forward, but Brown, is keeping the backline together for the Hawks, stopping every forward thray that the Demons put out there.
And for that reason, the Demons are trying to exploid the Hawks defence by taking long range shots at goal, and are missing every opportunity going forward. Very in-accurate in front of goals are the Demons and they will be ruing their missed opportunities.
Hawthorn were quick on the rebound, and moved the ball fluently into their forward line were their tall timber, Lance Franklin took the mark and kicked his second goal of the match, that's the story of the match so far, the Demons wasteful in front of goal, the Hawks accurate.

201174.jpg

Campbell Brown is unstoppable in defence

The Demons once again moved the ball forward, but this time found the way through the Hawks defence, where Campbell Brown was a little too careless in a marking contest against Cale Morton who got the free kick for in the back. Morton slots home the goal, and the Demons edge slightly closer to the Hawks.
The Demons again get the clearance out of the center and head forward, the Demons are playing some great football here, and with Rohan Bail running into the 50 and kicking his first goal of his career, the Demons with their second consecutive goal, which puts them just 5 points down. The Demons faithful are alight.
And when Cameron Bruce scores a goal for the Demons with just 3 minutes remaining in the quarter, it is the Demons third consecutive goal, and now for the first time of the match, the Demons have hit the front by a solid point. The Demons fan's are on their feet here, loving what there seeing from their boys.
However, the Hawks weren't done with just yet, and needed something to go into the half time break, and when their Captain Sam Mitchell scored his first goal, the Hawks steady the trait and put themselves 7 points back in front, at the half time break. What a exciting 2nd term that was, and let's hope the 2nd half will be just like the first.

Hawthorn: 3.4, 6.8: 44
Melbourne: 2.5, 5.7: 37

Hawthorn
Goal Scorers: Franklin -2, Lewis -1, Mitchell -1, Roughead -1, Young -1
Top Possessions: Brown -18, Osborne -16, Franklin -14, Guerra -11

Player to Watch: Campbell Brown: Campbell Brown has been the general in defence, ecspecially in that second term. Brown, who is playing on the dangerous Aaron Davey, has not only kept the star Demon quiet, but has picked up the most possessions on the ground with 18. 10 possessions in that second quarter, and with 7 marks, again, the most on the ground. Brown has also had 3 rebounds from 50, with his hard, displine style of play, he'll be one to watch come the rest of the match.

Melbourne
Goal Scorers: Bell -1, Morton -1, Bail -1, Bruce -1, Davey -1
Top Possessions: Bruce -22, Jones -17, Green -13, Bennell -12

Player to Watch: Cameron Bruce: Cameron Bruce is just getting better with age. Bruce has been outstanding in the first half, 22 possessions, with 14 touches in that second quarter, 11 of them being kicks, and taking 9 marks, the most for the Demons by a long way. Also kicking that goal mid way through the second quarter, he has been outstanding. 5 inside 50's just shows how important Bruce has been.

Third Quarter

Both teams come out from the rooms after the half time break. What a wonderful first half we just witnessed, is the second half going to be just as entertaining? Well it's only time before we find out. The Demons fought back well in that second term, nearing the end, kicking 3 goals, until the Hawks put themselves with a little bit of breathing space with a goal just seconds before the half time siren, however, it was the Demons that got started the third quarter, a certain goal was to be scored from Cale Morton taking a mark just 10 meters out, but somehow the youngster sprayed the shot in front and failed to register, kicking a behind only. Brent Guerra took the kick out and goes long with the ball, the ball hits the ground, and a wonderful pick up from Brad Miller sees him, run into the open goal and score a goal, from a turnover from the behind, the Demons hit the board first, and now scores are level here.

179058.jpg

Brad Miller pumps the air after kicking the opening goal

The Demons are the first on the board in the third quarter. Hawthorn wins the ball out of the center and heads forward, the ball runs out of bounds and it'll be a throw in just 30 meters out from the Hawks goals. Both ruckmen miss the football, and Jarryd Roughead runs behind the pack and picks the ball up and kicks a quick foot on ball, with the ball sailing through the goals, Hawthorn get the quick reply, and Roughead kicks his 2nd goal. Hawks by 6 points.
The third term, started where the first half left off. The game is goal for goal at the moment, with neither team getting the break away. As the trend has told for the whole match, Melbourne runs forward and get's the ball to the bald youngster, Nathan Jones runs in a kicks a wonderful goal, it sure is goal for goal here, and the short crowd here is witnessing a wonderful match of football. Scores level once again.
Lance Franklin, the Hawthorn goal kicking machine has had a lot of trouble trying to get the ball through the big sticks this afternoon. In-accuracy has hurt the big tall forward. Franklin will need to get his kicking boot on for the rest of the afternoon if Hawthorn are any chance at winning this match.

204726.jpg

Buddy Franklin is ruing his set shots on goal being in-accurate

And with the in-accuracy of the power Hawthorn forward, the Demons get under the guard, and Brad Miller runs into the goal and kicks his second goal of the match, becoming the first multiple goal scorer for the Demons, and with that goal, it put's the Demons in front for the first time this afternoon, and you should hear the Demon fan's, they are going insane.
But just like the second term, it was the Hawks with the last laugh coming towards the end of the quarter, with their power forward i was just talking about, Buddy Franklin kicks the goal with the quick reply, and with his 3rd goal of the match, but the margin back to the Hawks way into the three quarter time break and this sets up hopefully a wonderful last term. Both team's have been oustanding this afternoon with their pressure and sheer running through the middle of the ground, but it'll come down to the fittest team going into the last quarter, and being the first match of the season, it'll be interesting to see how many players pull up with cramp towards the half way mark of the quarter.

027695-hawthorn-hawks-logo.jpg
Hawthorn
Goal Scorers: Franklin -3, Roughead -2, Lewis -1, Mitchell -1, Young -1
Top Possessions: Osborne -28, Brown -23, Franklin -20, Young -19

Player to Watch: Michael Osborne: Michael Osborne has gotten under everyone's guard at this point of the match. 28 possessions, with 12 touches in that third quarter, he has been good. 4 inside 50's, and 5 clearences, Osborne has been one of the more accurate players in this Hawthorn side this afternoon. He'll be looking to have a big last quarter to try and get his side over the line.

melbourne_demons__71939.gif
Melbourne
Goal Scorers: Miller -2, Bell -1, Morton -1, Bail -1, Jones -1, Bruce -1, Davey
Top Possessions: Bruce -31, Jones -26, Garland -20, Green 16

Player to watch: Brad Miller: Brad Miller has been rather quiet this afternoon, but some good quality balls into the forward line from the Melbourne midfield, into Miller who took the most of his oppourtinuties, and kicked 2 important goals to keep his side in the atch in that third quarter. Miller has only had the 10 touches this afternoon, but he is one of those players that doesn't need a lot of the footy to have an impact. A few more goals from Miller will be needed if Melbourne are going to win this contest in the last term.

Fourth Quarter

So the fourth quarter is about to get under way with this contest going to be a close finish. A great story for the Demons, is that youngster, Jack Watts looks to be starting this last quarter on the field after coming off the ground early in the first time with what seemed to be a ankle injury. So good news for Melbourne, Jack Watts is starting on the field in this last quarter.
It was only a minute into the last quarter before we saw the first goal kicked, it was Brad Miller that scored his 3rd goal of the match, and with that goal, it saw the Demons get ahead by 3 point's, could this be the perfect start the Demons were hoping for, an upset win against a quality opposition?

201092.jpg

Brad Miller contests with Joshua Gibson

So the Demons are ahead by 3 points, and just like the rest of the match, the rest of the match has been goal for goal, and this time was no exception, with the unlikely, Trent Croad coming from the full back line, to bring his opponent Brad Miller up the ground, Croad, got the ball from a handpass from Jordan Lewis, and shooted for goal from 55 out. Croad just reached the line, but it was a goal, and now the Hawks have gone back out in front.
So the Hawks have hit the front again, but the Demons would be very disappointed with Aaron Davey, who is one of the Demons best players and their main forward for the season, he has been very disappointing, with only just the 5 possessions and a goal to his name, the Demons would be hoping Davey could have a big last term.
The rest of the last quarter was some good hard football. Both teams obviously wanted to win this match, so no one wanted to get a quick goal away, it was 4 points the difference with just 7 minutes remaining, with the Hawks in front. A quick behind from the Demons saw the difference cut back to 3 points with just 4 minutes remaning.

182859.jpg

Aaron Davey has been quiet for the Demons

So we just minutes remaining, could any side get the break away goal, yes they could and it was the Hawks through their running power machine, Clint Young who marched through the 50 meter arch, and slotted home a wonderful goal to put the Hawks 9 points in front. Is that the sealer of the game? it's going to be very hard for the Demons to get back from here, they will need to kick 2 quick goals to even get back in front.
And then with just under a minute remaining, the Demons head forward, and it is their veteran, Cameron Bruce who did the magic, kicking a goal after taking the mark and quickly going back and kicking the goal, the Demons are back to 3 points down with just 30 seconds remaining on the close, the Demons need a quick clearance and a quick snap at goal to win it here, the Hawks have put everybody behind the ball.
The ball was again tangled up in the midfield and the 30 seconds ran out of time, and the siren goes, Hawthorn win by 3 points, every body looks spent, and the Demons players look shattered all over the ground, scattered on the field. What a wonderful contest we witnessed this afternoon.
