Allianz European Championship - A thrilling finale goes to the very last ball

Interesting statistics:
  • Despite only containing one ICC Full Member nation so far, no less than 20 of the 26 teams who have so far competed in the Nagico and Allianz Championships have included players with Test experience. The only ones not to are: Bermuda, Canada, Netherlands, Scotland, St Maarten, St Vincent. None of those six teams has won a knock-out match.
  • An England win in the final would move England to #3 in the (incomplete) World Rankings, and Italy to #4. An Italian win would move Italy to #2, and England to #5. A tie would put Italy at #3 and England at #5. Only an Italian win can stop Scotland moving to #2 on their own.
  • If Italy win the final, it is possible that both they and Trinidad will have won their regional championship despite no batsman scoring a 100 or bowler taking a five-wicket haul.
  • England go into the final with the highest run-scorer (Joe Root, 271) and wicket-taker (Harry Gurney, 13). Italy, however, can claim the best batting average (Brendon Diamanti, 157.00) and bowling average (Dinidu Marage, 11.00).

Un-freaking believable! Vettori and Diamanti are absolute legends. 53 off the last 3, that too in cricsim. WOW! :clap

Can't forget Hughes' contribution. He's the one that put us in a position where we could go on an all out attack in the final overs.

There's no way we should let this freakish performance go to waste. Time for our bowlers to step up and knock out 'em Poms.

He tried another cover-drive, but was completely done by the cutter.

One ball left. Six runs needed. Can James Tredwell be a hero after a horrific innings?

And that's it! A thrilling last-ball finish means that Italy are the Allianz European Champions!

Congratulations to them, congratulations to @VC the slogger, and commiserations to @EARAgAV.

Both of these sides, along with Denmark, Germany, Northern Ireland and Scotland have qualified for the World Cup.

What a thriller between two evenly balanced teams!
But, in the end Italy's bowling led them to victory

We hope you will be joining us in the coming matches

Amazing stuff from Italy! We may have the likes of Vettori, Hughes, Di Venuto in our lineup, but to stay unbeaten throughout a tournament featuring stronger sides on paper is a very special effort.

Gotta feel bad for England as they can't win 50-over big tournament finals against any team, not even Italy. Well, so long until we meet again in hell the World Cup.

The index has now been updated for the last time. Thanks to @joejoe018 @El Loco @EARAgAV @Prathik84 @VC the slogger @Neer. @sathishsky @Mr Nokkaya @Aggz and @toby123 for helping to make this an enjoyable season.

Hopefully you'll be able to reprise your teams in the World Cup a little later on, and in the next European Championship if (and hopefully when) I manage to get them going - and hopefully you might even have discovered a new favourite player from an obscure European nation.

Nice to see Italy upsetting the odds. And Denmark qualifying for the World cup haha the fairy tale continues.
