An Australian has already done it - google Belinda Clark.

In the mens it will be an Indian or Sri Lankan playing against Bangladesh or Zimbabwe on one of those highways they usually produce for those average boosting series.

Brendon McCullum will do it, on one of those flat pitches in NZ with ridiculously small boundaries. He's made a massive OD score in domestic cricket, and is due one in an ODi, my bets would be placed with McCullum.

McCullum only just scored his first century against real opposition the other night. McCullum is a hack if ever there was one.

I have a feeling a big hitter isn't going to cross this mark.

It will probably be like that Duminy innings in CL of 99 from 52 balls.......

Herschelle Gibbs could do it....... Or someone like a Duminy, provided they came in at 3....

To score a double requires exceptional concentration and fitness. I dont think Tendulkar will be able to do it.
A few years ago I would have bet on either of the Aussie openers, viz Haydos or Gilly to do so.

Of the current lot,McCullum looks like th best so far. Though Virender Sehwag is not far behind.

I have a feeling that as we see even more T20 cricket, a ODI 200 might be scored VERY fast, and be over by 30 overs. Someone could just go nuts. Most of the really big ODI scores to date arent wild scoring affairs- they are measured innings that almost made 50 overs. I can see Gayle or Sehwag just having a day out and scoring 200 in really quick time.

Difficult Choice. But I remember Shahid Afridi mentioning once in an interview that it is his dream that he wants to score double century in One day Cricket.

Let him get to 50 first. Even that's doubtful. Heck, even 20 is doubtful...

Precisely the point. It usually has to be a measured innings to score nearly 200. You have to be incredibly lucky to play in T20 mode and last till you score 200. You also have to consider that after 20 overs as the ball gets older and softer it might be a little more difficult to slog away. And you begin to get tired as well.

Bottom line is, IMO it has to be someone who can score fast and relatively risk free at the same time. People who have a large number of shots like Ponting and Tendulkar. Maybe Duminy has a chance. But I don't see Sehwag, Gayle or McCullum lasting that long. The way they play, it takes them a ot of luck to get past 50. How much luck would they need to reach 200.

Did anyone actually see Coventry's 194? What sort of player is he? To get that close he must have played well, and from reports he is a measured batsman, not a slogger.

I'm really surprised that someone hasnt gotten the 200 yet, with so many weak teams that have ODI status- Ireland, Kenya, Zim, Bangladesh, Scotland, Namibia. Even the USA in the champ league a few years back!

He was dropped a few times from memory.

Its not that easy. You have 300 balls to face by 11 Batsmen and asking one of them to make 200 from those. Even if playing against weak teams, no one batsmen will be allowed make a whole lot of runs because his partner will be doing good too. In both the 194 innings by Coventry and Anwar no other batsmen in their team made more than 40 runs, most got out for under 20. In Sachin's 175, only Raina was the high scorer. So 200 would only be possible when a single batsmen does a bulk of the scoring for his team...so that means others would have to get out quickly. That says there's a higher probability of a batsmen scoring 200 when his team faces quality bowling, he just has to play better than the best that day. Also the probability rises if his team bats first, as there is no pressure.

Although with all the T20 hundreds, it feels like an ODI 200 is just around the corner, I don`t see it as something which would be done frequently or easily. Even in test match cricket, it is not in every game that we see a double hundred. Even on flat wickets, getting to scores of 150+ are tough as they do take great powers of concentration.

Write the name of players you think have the potential to hit 200 in Odi

For me,
Sehwag
Dilshan
Sachin
only these.... and Hayden but he;s retired.
