Story Australia in 2009 - The Ashes and Beyond (ICC 2006)

Lord's 1st Test

Day 4 - Australia battle to save test
England continued to apply pressure on the 4th day as they had Australia at 102-4 before tea. Michael and David Hussey then produced a 120 run partnership before the younger Hussey was out in the last over of the day. But with only a 155 run lead, and the Lord's pitch beginning to show signs of uneven bounce, building that lead is going to be hard work on day 5. The Aussies will need Gilchrist and then the tail to stick around long enough so Hussey can get them to safety.

Australia 416 and 236 for 5 (M Hussey 91no, D Hussey 56, Panesar 2-83) lead England 497 by 155 runs.

Nice work mate. Has been very tight match so far.

KUTGW :thumbs

Thanks for the encouragement mate. You are motivating me to keep going with this!

Day 5 - First blood to England
Australia's goal to build a competitive lead was shattered on the first morning as the wicket of Gilchrist for 20 began a collapse. As wickets fell at the other end, the pressure was too much and Michael Hussey fell 2 short of his century. The pitch was a bit uneven and slowish, but Strauss and Cook hammered the bowling and ended proceedings with an hour to spare. All in all, a very impressive performance by England, batting in the first innings and bowling in the second. The Aussies will have some soul searching to do before Old Trafford.

Ponting searching for answers as Strauss and Cook take England towards victory.

Atherton's Match Preview
Bad news in the England camp as captain Michael Vaughan has aggravated an old back injury during fielding drills. It is not known yet the full extent of the injury. Alastair Cook takes over as captain, and 21 year old Adam Wilkes will replace Vaughan.

Vaughan: "I'm obviously very disappointed. I've been working very hard on my fitness since I first had this problem last winter. I didn't do enough to keep my back warm during our last training session, and that was probably the catalyst. But looking on the bright side, we are up 1-0 and this is still strong side at home. Some of the other senior players will have to take more responsibility for their batting."

Botham's Pitch Report
Looks to be a good test match pitch. There will be just enough in it to keep the seamers interested, but this is a batting track. Panesar should come into play on the 4th and 5th day bowling into the rough on what is going to be a turning pitch. It's sunny out here in the middle right now, but the weather man tells us that rain and heavy clouds are expected on days 2 through 4. One never knows with the flaky Manchester weather, but let's hope the weather doesn't thwart what should be a great contest.

Day 1 - Openers put England on top
Stand-in captain Cook won a crucial toss at Old Trafford, and as expected chose to bat. Cook and Strauss frustrated the Australian bowlers, particularly Tait who went for almost 100 runs on the first day. Their opening partnership was finally ended near tea, after putting on 172. After Cook perished, Strauss carried on to his 15th test hundred. But he was soon dismissed by a beautiful inswinger from Bracken. Lee then got the crucial wicket of Pietersen (fishing outside off stump), but England steadied itself into a position of strength by the end of the day. If Bell and Read stick around for the first hour tomorrow, it could turn out to be a huge score for the home side.

England 308 for 4 (Strauss 103, Cook 89, Bracken 2-88) lead by 308 runs.

Day 2 - Middle order pushes on despite weather
Friday was an absolutely horrible day for cricket. About 35 overs were lost due to rain, but that didn't stop England from further strengthening their position. Chris Read continued his remarkable form with his second ton in as many innings. Flintoff pulvarised the attack in the last session, hitting a quick fire 55 from 77 balls. How will the Aussies respond to this already huge total when it is their turn to bat?

England 514 for 6 (Read 104, Flintoff 55no, Bracken 3-150) lead by 514 runs.

Day 3 - Jaques and Ponting dig in

Heavy overnight rain meant that play on the 3rd day did not commence until late in the afternoon. After Tait cleaned up the tail, Australia came out to bat in very cloudy conditions The pitch also was green and the ball seamed all over the place. Hayden went early, but Jaques moved to his half century and Ponting remained there with him. Still a long way to go for Australia to draw the match, but it appears the rain will mean that a result is unlikely barring a batting collapse.

England 542 lead Australia 106 for 1 (Jaques 58no, Ponting 32no) by 436 runs.

Day 4 - Cautious Australia continue fightback
Australia took a very careful approach to their 1st innings, with the knowledge that a draw could be their only positive result. Jaques and Ponting worked hard, but both failed to push on to a hundred. Even the in-form Hodge played the swinging ball very carefully. Hopefully he will look to play some shots on the 5th day as the Aussies look to get well past the follow-on.

England 542 lead Australia 273 for 4 (Jaques 82, Ponting 64, Flintoff 1-14) by 269 runs.

Monty Panesar shows his frustration as Hodge is dropped at short leg on the 5th morning.

Day 5 - David Hussey stars in draw
David Hussey made his maiden test hundred, and then carried on unbeaten as Australia batted through most of the 5th day at Manchester. A draw was always inevitable given the terrible weather over the last 4 days.

Read really is in top notch form for England.

Hodge is batting nicely and a great innings by David Hussey!
But you need a win, lets get these Aussies the ashes in Englands backyard!

Cant wait till the next update! Great story!

High scoring game, shame no one won it. D. Hussey was great in the second innings.

Whoah, what a player! Personally I would have declared earlier, to give the bowlers more of a workout.

Great player profile edition :)

I would have, but my bowlers seem to suck regardless of what I do. :D

Dont worry, my bowlers suck too.

Tait, Warne and McGrath are going good, I played Inness in the ODI's. He got hit for a bit in some games but took wickets. Once I was getting smashed and brang on Hayden, put it to V defensive and he picked up 3/27.. Getting Lara for 136 or something :D
