Story Bangladesh: From Minnows to Tigers! (End of England tour)

Several months have passed in-game and it’s time to select a team for the World T20 in Sri Lanka.

Bad news hits as I go to the selection screen. Mahmadullah is out for 3 weeks with an injury. But his spot could go to someone who can perhaps stake a claim for further selection in the future. Nafees is also carrying a little tweaked muscle that unfortunately prevents him from playing.

Bangladesh’s domestic season has only just started and there is little form to really look at. I was unimpressed with their T20 performance against Sri Lanka in the series earlier on this year. I also can’t rely too much on their performance last year either. I’m going to have to go with consistency rather than form for this squad.

Openers

Tamim Iqbal
Imrul Kayes

Middle order

Shakib Al Hasan
Shuvagoto Hom
Naeem Islam
Alok Kapali
Aftab Ahmed
Nazimuddin
H Ishaq

Wicketkeepers

Mushfiqur Rahim
B Anjum

Bowlers

Dolar Mahmud
Tareq Aziz
Mashrafe Mortaza
Abdur Razzak

Mortaza and Razzak get recalls simply because overall in their career their stats haven’t been bad at all. Aftab Ahmed and Nazimuddin have performed consistently in domestic competitions over the years and they get recalls to the first team as well. Ishaq and Anjum are the two new guys. Really there as backup but depending on how things go they may or may not get to play in the final eleven.

First match against the ever-strong Australia. Not going to be easy. Second match against South Africa. Could I have gotten a worse group? I doubt. Not going to be easy for me to get past the Group stages but one can wonder.

Pitch report and weather forecast ? World T20, Bangladesh vs. Australia

This is a good pitch for the match today, but if the bowlers put the ball in the right areas there may be something in it for them. There is a particular area just short of a good length off of the right hander?s off stump that the quicker bowlers would be interested in. But anything not pitching in that area, which is not very large to begin with, should sit up nicely to be hit. Up above, a cloudy sky in the afternoon, giving rise to clear skies as the evening wears on. The lights may need to be switched on later but they may not have much of an impact.

Squads

Bangladesh
Tamim Iqbal (Bat)
Imrul Kayes (Bat)
Aftab Ahmed (Bat)
Shakib Al Hasan (CAPT - All)
Shuvagoto Hom (Bat)
Naeem Islam (All)
Alok Kapali (All)
Mushfiqur Rahim (WK)
Mashrafe Mortaza (Bowl)
Dolar Mahmud (Bowl)
Tareq Aziz (Bowl)

Bangladesh?s lineup looks like a distinctly average one on paper. With arguably their best batsman, Mahmadullah, injured, it?s going to be a tough tournament for them.

Watch out for

Mashrafe Mortaza ? He has been absent from the team for some time now but he has to show the selectors that their faith in him is justified.

Tamim Iqbal ? Probably the most talented batsman in the lineup, Bangladesh will rely on him to give them a good start whether they set the target or chase it.

Australia
Phil Hughes (Bat)
Phil Jacques (Bat)
Michael Clarke (CAPT ? Bat)
Mike Hussey (Bat)
Shane Watson (All)
Cameron White (All)
Brad Haddin (WKB)
John Hastings (All)
Clint Mackay (Bowl)
Peter Siddle (Bowl)
Trent Copeland (Bowl)

Australia clearly have the better team but it?s up to them to perform. Looking at this squad though, it?s going to be tough to beat them. Vast experience and great talent. They also have a win behind them, having already beat South Africa in the first match of this group to almost guarantee them a spot in the super eights.

Watch out for

Mike Hussey ? He is capable of so much on his day. Against Bangladesh he will be looking for a great start to his tournament today.

Shane Watson ? With the bat he can be devastating. With the ball he is the most experienced bowler in this side. Australia will be looking to him to score some runs and pick up a few wickets.

The toss

Clarke and Shakib stand in the middle. The ground is fairly full and noisy. Shakib tosses and Clarke successfully calls heads. He ponders for just a moment before deciding to put Bangladesh in the middle. He says that they are looking for a win in this match so that they can finish top of the group.

Shakib says that his team is ready for the tournament and they will not be intimidated by Australia. They have been preparing for weeks now and they are ready to put out their best today. He says that he thinks this pitch may have something in it later on, so around 140 or 150 is probably a good score in the first innings.

Play ? World T20, Bangladesh vs. Australia

Hastings opened the bowling. Tamim was cautious to the first ball, moving to the pitch of the ball but missing with his bat. The ball thudded into the pads but only half an appeal from the bowler, who knew that Tamim was hit miles outside the off stump. Tamim again moved well to get to the pitch of the second ball and this one was hit over mid on for the first boundary. He would have had his heart in his mouth after he miscued the last ball of the over. Third man ran across and for a moment it seemed as if he would get to it to make the catch but he could not get there in time and the ball went for another four.

Clint Mackay bowled a great over next, restricting the batsmen to only four singles. The nerves were there for the subcontinent team as Kayes called Tamim for a sharp single off of the first ball of the third over. Taking sharp singles to Aussie fielders is always risky, and Kayes just about managed to get home before the direct hit from backward point took the leg stump clean out of the ground.

Mackay was bowling well and Clarke gave him a third over on the trot. He immediately repaid his captain for the decision, bowling a slow leg cutter that pitched on middle and held its line to trap Kayes in front. Kayes went through his shot way too early and he was gone to a simple LBW decision.

Ahmed walked out and immediately got off the mark with a nice looking shot through backward point that third man ran across to intercept. He kept the batsmen down to one. Tamim was happy to have the strike and he looked like he was enjoying himself as he hit the next ball for yet another four. This one went so quickly to the extra cover boundary that the fielders hardly had time to move.

Hastings troubled Ahmed with a ball that hit that troublesome area outside the off stump. This ball came back into him off the pitch and hit him in front. Ahmed was clearly disappointed when the umpire gave him out after thinking about it for a long time. Replays and Hawkeye showed that the ball had hit him outside the off stump and would have gone on to miss the stumps entirely. Ahmed had every right to be disappointed but he had to go.

Shakib strode out to a great reception from the fans. Obviously the locals in this crowd were supporting Bangladesh and they let themselves be heard. They had more reason to cheer when Hastings strayed down the leg side with his last ball of the over and Shakib easily clipped it away to the square leg fence. They grew deathly quiet when Siddle got him to hit one high into the air. Long on ran across and judged it well to take a great catch.

Tamim entered the 40s but he could not carry on as he was bowled by a well disguised slower ball from Siddle in the 12th over with the score on 70. Watson produced a beauty to trap Islam in front in the next over. Another easy LBW decision for the umpire.

Kapali struggled against the potent Aussie attack and he ended up edging to Haddin for only 2. Just a few balls later Hom went for a big heave and was caught at deep midwicket. Nobody was staying in the middle for long and the run rate was falling fast.

They lost two more wickets trying to up their run rate, Watson taking both of them in his last over. By the end of the 20, Bangladesh had struggled to reach 100 and Australia were clearly on top.

Apart from Tamim no one contributed with the bat which is probably the main reason why you struggled to reach 100. If only one person had managed to stick around for a period of time you could have 20 or 30 more runs scored. That would have been a pretty hard ask against Australia though I suppose, and the only other decent batsman (as far as I know) is Shakib.

Hopefully your bowlers can do better. I've found in games as Bangladesh that their bowlers always do well but are let down by the batsmen.

I appreciate the commitment of yours towards your story, the updates are written so well that they arouse the readers interest, even though it's without graphics.
Keep up the good work, dude.:thumbs

Typical again. Tamim fires and rest all do nothing. Watson is such a fantastic player. Wasn't Kapali batting a bit too low?

I think he might have been trying to strengthen his batting lineup with Mahmudullah out injured. Long batting lineups when playing as Bangladesh are one of the only ways to avoid getting wasted.

Bangladesh had scored a very low total but if they could pick up some wickets early on then the pressure would be on Australia. They had no hope of restricting such a great batting lineup and the only way to win would be to bowl them out.

They started well enough, Mahmud bowling an outswinger to Jaques the first ball he faced. Jacques pushed at it and the ball took the edge. First slip stuck out his hand and snatched it out of the air. 1 for 1.

In the fourth over Aziz got the ball to pitch on that tricky area and the ball just did enough to fly off of the edge of Clarke’s bat. Rahim took an excellent low catch diving forward and Bangladesh celebrated. 19 for 2 but the fall of the wicket brought Mike Hussey to the crease.

Aziz almost had Hussey out first ball but the edge flew between the two slips and down to the boundary for four. The two men in the cordon looked at each other, seemingly wondering why the other man had not gone for the catch. But Hussey did not care. He was underway.

Australia did not need to do anything risky and they stuck to that plan. But in the 10th over Hughes suddenly unleashed on Shakib, pulling out a sweep shot that went for four before hitting the next two balls back over the bowler’s head and out to the mid on boundary.

Bangladesh had a tough task to try to balance an aggressive field that would save singles and take wickets but also trying to protect the boundaries as well. Hughes did not care. He pushed the fielders and created chances for twos as they succumbed to the pressure. His fifty loomed and he got there with a vicious cover drive all along the ground. By that time Australia only needed 19 more and they got there a few overs later, Hussey hitting the winning runs. An easy win for the stronger team.

Shakib says after the match that they did not bat well at all and that was something that needed to be addressed before the next match. He did not think the bowling was all that bad but there was still room for improvement. He congratulates Australia for being the better team and says that they have another tough match up ahead against South Africa but whoever wins that match would go forward.

Michael Clarke is happy to win and go through to the super eights top of the group. He says that it was a brilliant all-round performance and he thinks that his team has what it takes to go all the way in the tournament.

Man of the match is Phil Hughes, who is just happy to be batting and scoring runs for his country. Having runs behind him will be key to carrying his form into the harder stages of the competition and if he continues going like he did in this match then the other teams should watch out.

Easy win! Bangladesh should have made over six runs per over but you really don't know how the conditions were. Iqbal scored quickly but all of sudden, the pair failed.

This next match is an all-important one for both teams. Whoever wins this advances. Whoever loses goes home. Simple as that.

Pitch report and weather forecast ? World T20, Bangladesh vs. South Africa

This pitch has some big scores in it. Nothing in it at all for the bowlers and they really would have to produce something special for them to surprise the batsmen. What might give them some joy is the cloud cover and the humidity up above. The ball may swing for a few more overs than usual but as soon as the white ball loses its shine, that?s going to be it.

Squads

Bangladesh
Tamim Iqbal (Bat)
Imrul Kayes (Bat)
Naeem Islam (All)
Shakib Al Hasan (CAPT - All)
Aftab Ahmed (Bat)
Nazimuddin (Bat)
Shuvagoto Hom (Bat)
Mushfiqur Rahim (WK)
Tareq Aziz (Bowl)
Dolar Mahmud (Bowl)
Abdur Razzak (Bowl)

Bangladesh have decided to go without Alok Kapali and Mashrafe Mortaza for this match. Kapali struggled badly in the last game and his form earlier this year was not that great, so his spot goes to Nazimuddin. That leaves them without a bowling option, though. Mortaza loses his spot, perhaps unfairly, to Razzak. A specialist slow bowler may be able to restrict better on this pitch than a faster bowler, so Mortaza has to be sacrificed.

Watch out for

Naeem Islam ? He has been fairly consistent without being too flashy. Today may just be his day to step up and make his presence in this team felt.

Abdur Razzak ? Bangladesh might have just made an excellent decision by playing him in this match. He is a talented bowler and he would take some of the pressure off of the other slower bowlers in this lineup.

South Africa
Brett Pelser (Bat)
Hashim Amla (Bat)
AB de Villiers (Bat)
Graeme Smith (CAPT ? Bat)
JP Duminy (Bat)
Dane Vilas (WK)
David Weise (All)
Ryan McLaren (All)
Shaun de Kock (Bowl)
Friedel de Wet (Bowl)
Ruan Pieterson (Bowl)

South Africa only decided to go with one proper spinner in their side. That may prove to be a bad thing. Their seam attack is top notch, but with only one spinner it might just be a lot of the same thing for the Bangladeshi batsmen.

Watch out for

Hashim Amla ? He top scored in the loss against Australia and he is going to be looking to make another big impact on this match against comparatively weaker opposition.

Ryan McLaren ? South Africa are going to be looking to him to lead the bowling attack and make early inroads into the Bangladesh batting order.

The toss

Shakib tosses again and Smith calls heads, which proves to be correct as the coin lands. Smith has no hesitation in putting Bangladesh into bat, saying that this is a must-win match and they would be more comfortable knowing their total instead of having to set a target. He reckons that his side are going to be fired up for a victory after losing to Australia and if they played some good cricket then his team will move on to the super eights.

Shakib says that the batting was ordinary in the last game but they have had their team meeting and had several lengthy net sessions. He is confident that the batting today will be more up to the standards expected and that the team can set a competitive total. When asked a possible score, he shakes his head and says that whatever they reach after 20 overs would hopefully be enough to defend.

Play ? World T20, Bangladesh vs. South Africa

Tamim showed his intent from the start, swinging at a wide one outside the off stump. He had little timing in the shot but was able to run a single as the ball dribbled down to third man. Kayes was better with his timing, getting two from his first ball, but he was out the next ball trying a cheeky ramp shot over the slips. The ball was not short enough for it and it took the bottom edge to knock the bails off. Kayes was clearly angry with himself as he walked off and he had good reason to be.

Tamim got Bangladesh?s first boundary with a well played shot. He angled the bat and guided the ball between the second slip and the third man patrolling the boundary. At the other end it was much the same as in the last match, though. McLaren bowled a good slower ball that had Islam caught in the crease, not knowing whether to get forward or not. The ball hit the pads and he was out LBW.

Tamim just kept going, however. He was not about to let what happened 22 yards away bother him. He took de Wet on and got the maximum reward as he cut one for a flat six over point. The troubles continued at the other end, though, as Pieterson struck in his first over. The ball was not the best one he would ever bowl. It was very wide, but Shakib followed it and could only edge it to the single slip.

In the next over, Tamim pushed at one and got it into the onside. Ahmed called him for the single but really it was suicidal, especially to AB de Villiers standing at midwicket. He was onto the ball in a flash and took the smallest moment to aim before firing a throw at the striker?s end. Ahmed dived and it took a lot of deliberation by the third umpire before the decision was ruled out. Ahmed was silly to even call for the single in the first place.

Nazimuddin came to the crease and for a moment it looked like Tamim had actually found a partner who was willing to stick around with him. Things settled for a couple of overs until Tamim himself was out, hitting it straight to Graeme Smith standing at midwicket. He went for 38 with the score on 60.

Nazimuddin was just starting to look good when he was out LBW to de Weise. Up to then, he was the only other batsman to reach double figures. And the wickets did not stop tumbling there either. Three more fell before the 20 overs, and Bangladesh were again staring a big defeat in the face.

End of Bangladesh innings ? 103/9(20), Iqbal 38(27), McLaren 3-15(4)

So, Mclaren lived to the hype. I cannot see Bangladesh proceeding to next stage unless some miraculous spells come from their bowlers now. Batting continued to be ordinary, infact less than ordinary this time. :(

Poor performance from Bangladesh batsman's. Bangladesh bowlers will need to do something really special to win the match for their side.

No! I really wanted to see Bangladesh do something good in this tournament. Well, it is only about Tamim Iqbal and not Bangladesh.

About the only thing that Bangladesh had in their favour was that South Africa had not won their first match in the tournament either. But that really would not stop them from chasing such a low total with some overs to spare.

They chose to open the bowling with Razzak. Pelser did not quite care who was bowling and threw his bat at the second ball, getting it through point for a four. That seemed to set the tone for South Africa but Bangladesh were good in the field and they threw themselves around, preventing singles and saving boundaries.

Aziz was the bowler they targeted most. To be truthful, he was not at his best and he seemed to be bowling more slowly than usual. He bowled two overs for 18 runs, not terrible by T20 standards, but the next most expensive bowler after him had also bowled 2 overs but for 9 runs. Bangladesh did not have another real bowler in their lineup to take his place.

They decided to have Tamim bowl the 2 overs instead. He actually was not that bad, only going for 11 runs from his 2-over spell. The South African openers had not been troubled yet, though. The run rate required after 12 overs had gone up to 5.7 per over, but with wickets in hand that would be no problem.

Dolar Mahmud finally got the first wicket. Amla went LBW to a good slower ball that would have hit middle and leg. He went for 19 off of 34 balls, but it perhaps was what South Africa needed as it brought AB de Villiers to the crease. AB was a man capable of scoring quickly when necessary.

mahmudcelebrates.jpg

Mahmud celebrates the wicket of Amla

Razzak came back to get Pelser LBW off of the first ball of a new spell. He really gave the ball a good rip and it just turned enough to beat the outside edge and rap Pelser on the back foot. He went for 42 with 8 fours and the rest in singles.

The bowlers and the fielders gave the new batsmen absolutely nothing to work with and with 5 overs to go the required rate had jumped to 7.2 per over. Still nothing that South Africa would not be able to handle, everyone thought.

AB proved just that when he smashed Islam for two fours in the 17th over to swing things back South Africa?s way. Anyone who was hoping for a Bangladesh upset was starting to lose that hope quickly. Those hopes went right out of the ground when Smith hit a well-timed six over long on in Shakib?s next over. Shakib had his revenge, though, getting Smith LBW two balls later.

The field seemed to change with every ball and Bangladesh really did well, cutting off the boundaries and keeping the batsmen to singles only. South Africa just about kept themselves in it so that by the last over they needed only 9 runs. Nothing that was unusual in T20 cricket but anything could happen. Shakib was the man entrusted with the ball and everyone in the ground looked on and waited with anticipation.

He took his time in setting his field. The boundaries were well covered. Long off, long on, deep midwicket, third man, deep point. The rest of the fielders were all saving the single. Backward point, extra cover, mid on, fine leg. Once he was satisfied, he came in to bowl.

The first ball went to the left of the fine leg for a single. 8 from 5.

AB played the second ball square on the leg side. Deep midwicket ran in to intercept it and threw the return back as quickly as he could to limit the batsmen to just one. 7 from 4.

_47784850_hasan_afp766.jpg

Shakib encourages his fielders

The third ball was swept well but could not beat the short fine leg. The batsmen did not risk the single. 7 from 3. On the South Africa bench, nobody wanted to take their eyes off of the action. More than a few people looked nervous. The Bangladesh coaching staff also looked on with their breath held.

Shakib?s fourth ball was well struck but only out to deep midwicket, who fielded well and restricted them to a single. 6 from 2 but more importantly, one hit away from a victory.

AB marked his guard again. He took a moment to look at the field carefully before settling into his stance. Shakib bowled. AB swung and connected, but the ball went straight up. It went out to long off, who ran in hard thinking that the catch could be taken. When it was clear that the ball would fall before him, he slowed down and got it on the bounce before throwing to Shakib at the non-striker's end. 5 from 1.

A single hit would win the match for South Africa. A single, slightly less well-timed hit would tie the match. Where would Duminy aim for? Fine leg seemed like a good option. The leg side boundary was relatively short, but it was well-protected by a couple of Bangladesh's best fielders. But for Duminy to hit it there he would have to do well. Shakib would pitch the ball well wide of off stump with fine leg in the circle and that was clear to all.

Shakib himself had a word with his vice captain, Aziz. They seemed to decide that Duminy would probably look straight for the boundary. Mahmud came into the circle from the third man boundary. A dangerous tactic, having both third man and fine leg up. The man in the circle at cover dropped back so that there was now a deep extra cover as well as a deep backward point.

Finally the field was set as Bangladesh wanted it. Shakib came in to bowl. It was pitched on a good length outside of off stump, slightly spinning in. Duminy came onto the front foot and swung from the hip. It went out to the left of long on, who ran across well and got there quickly to collect. The return came back to Shakib with the batsmen only having run a single.

There was the briefest moment of silence in the entire ground as everyone came to the realization that what they saw had really just happened. Then everyone exploded all at once. Everyone ran to Shakib, who was ecstatic. The South Africans looked crestfallen. Graeme Smith even looked a little angry.

It took some time to set things up for the post-match ceremony as everyone just seemed to be working in a state of shock. Eventually things were ready and after the introductions, Graeme Smith was invited to come up.

He said that a score of 103 should definitely be gettable no matter who the opposition is. But credit had to go to the Bangladesh fielding in particular. The bowlers were looking to contain and not really take wickets, and they bowled to their field settings well. He was extremely disappointed to not be going on to the next stage of the tournament but clearly if they did not know how to go about chasing 100-odd then they really did not belong in the next stage anyway.

Graeme Smith was not a happy man

Shakib came up to be interviewed next. He was all smiles and clearly his voice was full of excitement. He was asked to comment on winning first of all and he said that when they set such a low target nobody really believed that they could defend it, but they stuck to the basics and it paid off in the end for them. Their batting needed to improve a lot if they were to make things easier for them in the next stage though.

He was then asked about his final over. He replied by saying that 9 runs is easy to get in T20 cricket but he had to make sure that he did not bowl any bad balls and he trusted his fielders to do their job. That was all there was to it, really. He is congratulated on the win and wished good luck for the next stage.

Tamim is the man of the match. He says that he is enjoying his batting recently but he wants to go on and make bigger scores. With more time in the middle that will come and he hopes to keep contributing big to the team in the super eights.

What a win! Honestly I played the match and I STILL don?t believe it. But I?m in the super eights and hopefully I can get the batting right so I make a stronger showing there too. T20 in ICC10 is so-so with their simulations. Only a few guys can really keep batting for a while and it seems like Bangladesh doesn?t really have a lot of those guys.

Also, do the pictures add more to the story? It will take me longer to update with pictures since I have to find them and upload them elsewhere (can never trust if a pic will go missing on an external site) but if it really adds a lot then I'll do it for each update. Not going to be easy as time progresses and I end up with all computer-generated players but...we'll address that when the time comes I guess.

Pictures as good as those are definitely worth it. Still, without a lot of luck, it must take ages to find such good pictures. I would say, spend a short time looking for pictures every update - say half an hour. If you find any good ones that seem appropriate, well and good. If not, we'll do without. And if you find good pictures that might be used down the track, hang on to them. If the picture's good enough, you might even consider tailoring the story to fit it in!

A great update, and what a match! I saw you had scored 103 and thought that he's never going to win but much kudos to you for actually pulling it off. I always felt that T20 in ICC was pretty good, except for a lack of sixes at time. Much better than CC at least.

The pictures do add to the story, but again, don't spend too much time looking. In my story I spent hardly any time, but then again I normally had only one in each update.
