So BCCI contract list was out couple of days ago. So Sachin and Sehwag missed out on the contract but that wasn't a surprise because they have been out of the team for some time now. However, the surprise was Zaheer not getting a central contract. Most of the Indians fans are expecting Zaheer to be part of the next test series of India in South Africa based on his good start in the Indian domestic season. This looks tough now if we are to believe this contract list. Zaheer Khan is still the most skillful fast bowler in India and he is needed in the next 15 months to accompany our young fast bowlers. The new fast bowlers that are coming in such as Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shami Ahmed, Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron and Mohit Sharma are all very talented but they still need an experience bowler with them. Zaheer Khan provides that experience and I think he still has couple of years left in him. If Zaheer won't be in that tour to South Africa, that bowling attack looks really thin on experience. I mean if Zaheer is not on the team than the bowling attack is likely to be:

Ishant Sharma
Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Shami Ahmed
Umesh Yadav
Varun Aaron/Mohit Sharma?

Looking at this attack, the most experienced bowler is Ishant Sharma. This is a bit scary because Ishant Sharma is in a horrible form. Now if we look at the next most experience bowler, it is Umesh Yadav with 9 tests. So even though these guys have shown talent, they are short on experience. When you are touring the toughest place in the next 15 months, I think it is better to have your most experienced bowler with you.

Our fast bowler situation is in a state of flux that it was when Zaheer, Nehra etc made their debut. Very inexperienced but they did serve well for a while through the decade. Zaheer was supported by the fast bowlers who would come and go like Irfan, Balaji, Munaf, etc etc etc. We will be lucky to have 1 fast bowler to build around for the next 5-6 years, maybe it will be Shami.
