Season 2009

So it's upon us. And this year I'm going to have to really push it if I'm going to stick out as anything more than just above average.

Winter nets went okay but I didn't feel very in touch with the bat and felt like I'd really lost it batting form wise. My bowling felt much better than last season and seemed to have more of the others stuggling to cope with it. So now we've moved outside and we had our first outdoors net session. My bowling felt wrong but it always seems to be abit rubbish in outdoor nets anyway. When I stepped into bat I still didn't feel in touch with my batting and was starting to worry I had really lost my skill in that department. So moving on to this wednesday and our first match....

Wednesday 29/04/09- East Ardsley U-17's Vs Gildersome U-17's

So the first game of the season and I was bricking it. I though I was going to really bugger it up with the bat and I had alot of pressure on my shoulders to score. Their captain won the toss and put us in to bat. We made 16 odd in our opening partnership before one of them top edged and hook and got caught out bringing me in. I started off defending and what not playing myself in for the first few balls. I ended up hitting two 4's on the pull along with a pulled 6 from a very thick top edge. I also hit a beauty of a six straight down the ground. It was awesome. Beautiful technique and I barely even hit it to be honest but it just saled over the boundary. A few singles and a two got me to 24 before being bowled out trying to smash a straight one rather stupidly. To be honest it's a good job I'm left handed and they bowled a load down leg. While at the crease I doubled the run rate and my attacking play wore off on the captain who hit his first ever six!!! We finnished up on 83/8 from our 20 overs me top scoring and 12 being the second top score. Then onto the bowling. I and the captain where the only two you could even think of to bowl and he threw me the ball first. First ball got into my stride perfectly and delivered an absolute peacher on his feet taking out his middle stump which was awesome. It wasn't as good after that. I didn't bowl bad but it could have been better. I bowled my first three before being taken off. The middle overs where absolute shite really so when I came in to bowl the second to last over with them only needing 3 to win I knew we had no chance. I almost had two wickets in that over. One that just went over the stumps and the other was just a little too wide of the fielder. They got the final run 4 balls in to end the game my figures being 3.4-0-14-1. Although I didn't have the best figures I was the best bowler to be honest. I felt let down by the rest of the team to be honest as I was the only one that played well really. I was happy from a personal point of view though.

The second net session brought more **** net bowling as usual but my batting was deffinately in and I was playing my shots comfortably and was playing drives beautifully. Next game tommorow for the Sunday team hopefully I can do just aswell with the bat and the ball in this game.

Sunday 03/05/09- East Ardsley ST Vs Altofts ST

We played our first Sunday Team game this weekend with a heavily under strength squad as both the captain and a second teamer where called up to play for the 1stXI in a cup game. we ended up with 4 2ndXI players and basically no decent junior players. luckily their team had also taken a hit as their 1stXI where struggling nevermind their sunday team. They won the toss and elected to bat first. Our opener took a wicket with the first ball of the game(similar to mine on wednesday ) and the other opener did well bowling 5 over spells each taking us to 30 overs left. I came on second change bowling a 6 over spell of highly acurate bowling. Most balls were in the perfect area with only a few balls drifting into a bad spot. I ended the spell with figures of 6-2-18-3. I can't complain with any of the three wickets as they where all bowled middle or off. The first was bowled middle stump the second off stump and the third was a little Aussie kid that I got a little aggressive with and hit in the hand( he had an ouch session after that). I got rid of the kid in my final over which was nice as he was starting to get on my tits. We ended up getting them down to only one wicket left with that partnership lasting the last 16 or so overs. We bowled absolute rubbish as our bowlers bowled way too short in this spell. I got a bit ticked off when one of the other U-17's players, who I had been bowling in tandom with, came on to bowl a further 2 overs ontop of his 5. He bowled short all game and I though as I had been the best in terms of line and length I should have been brought on again. They finnished up on 155/9 from their 40 overs with their top scorer getting a rubbish 75(he wasn't great tbh).

So after lunch our turn to bat. I was due to bat 3,4,5 depending upon the circumstances. In the end I did come in a 5 but had my least favourite kind of bowler on. The junior that tries to bowl spin but just plobs in there. one of their seniors was bowling first and my batting partner said he was struggling to play him because he came from behind the umpire. I found him absolutely fine to play hitting an ondrive for a single the first ball he bowled to me. Then the over against the dobber bowler. I swept him for a 4 with one ball, hooked him for a four with another and hit him for a four with a sweetly played ondrive. My shots without runs had been fine and quite nice. Then the worst ball they can bowl. The ball thats a bit short and loops a bit slowly making you two minds about what shot to play. I ended up playing a strange backfoot sort of defensive and completely missed the ball after smacking him for 12 in the over. As it got down in the end we needed 4 runs to win from the last 3 overs. The person who I was batting with a fellow U-17, who had oppened the batting ended up getting bowled out after lasting so long and getting to 98. Only he could do that. In some ways I was glad he didn't get a 100 because he's already overated by the club as it is but was annoyed that we hadn't won. The problem with him is I don't rate him at all. His technique is rubbish and he plays naff shots. Also as soon as you up the pace ever so slightly he just falls apart.

Next game is ment to be tommorow but if the weather doesn't improve no chance we will be playing. Hopefully we do on sunday though. Will kept you posted on future games and net sessions.

quite a few games since then so I'll just put down my performances that I can remember:

EAUCC U-17's Vs Hanging Heaton U-17's
Bat:run out on 4
Ball: 4 overs for no wickets and a fair few runs, should of had a plum lb though.

EAUCC U-17's Vs Hunslet Nelson U-17's
Bat:34no in the last 7 overs.
Ball: no wickets again but didn't go for many.

EAUCC U-17's Vs Adwalton U-17's
Bat:37no chasing down 52, 19 runs scored by the rest of the team with extras being the 2nd top scorer.
Ball: 4 overs with 3-17

EAUCC U-17's Vs Carlton U-17's-Cup match
Bat:5. Being a Cup game we though we'd go proper T20 style so I got caught hitting one through off that should have been hit down leg.
Ball: like a bad of crap no wickets and went for 22 off my 4 overs. Although we only had 8 players so can't be too disapointed. We somehow managed to pull off a victory and go through to round 2.

EAUCC U-17's Vs Morley U-17's
Bat: 20. Considering the opposition where one of the strongest in the league I can't complain. Top score again.
Ball: Another night of crap making it two in a row. Off the 2 overs I bowled before I was taken off(not 100% sure on the definate reason why) I was hit for 20 and hurt my ankle a little.

We really are a bag of rubbish. One league victory and one Cup victory with me having somewhat of a monopoly on the runs with 119 with an average of 39.6/7(depending which way you round it).

Sunday Team haven't batted well at all with my highest score being about 12. Bowled this past week with figures of 3-2-2-2. In the two games I've bowled for that team I have been very effective. The first game was with a stand in captain so that's why I bowled 6. Finaly given my chance. Got senior training tonight so will give you an update on how well it went and hopefully I might get a 2ndXI call up. If it's for the cup game on sunday I'm screwed as It's my birthday and I'm doing something with my family so can't play.

A little update regarding last nights senior nets(on a thursday because of games on tuesday):

With my bowling suddenly going off the boil I decided to bowl some of my left arm chinamen instead. Bowled the 2ndXI captain with one that turned from outside off onto his off stump. Apart from that it was fairly poor as I cannot control it as well as I turn it so alot of the balls that pitched on middle-outside leg just turned a fair way down legside. Started to get annoyed as I hadn't been told to go pad up even though I had turned up pretty early. Finally got a chance and made the most of it. We had two asian lads who where friends of one of our players. They come down to nets to get a bit more practice I think. Both of them probably bowl 80+mph and had a majority of the rest of the seniors unable to play them all night with ball beating bat more often than not. The quicker of the two bowled slower with his first ball which I coverdrove into the net. Thats the only time he bowled slow to me. They where bowling at the same pace as to the rest of the batsmen who had bated so far(and even quicker at one point). Despite being 15 and the youngest, least experienced there I played them very well playing good shots and hitting my shots. The only times I struggled was when they bowled it a bit short as the bounce was very uneven with the ball either keeping low one second and bouncing up the next. After completing my net session(which included a massive 6 off a spinner) I felt pretty good about myself. A majority of the others said I'd batted very well and will have caught the attention of "them over there"(The 1st and 2ndXI captains and one of the more experienced players bowling to a keeper). A few of them where saying why I wasn't getting picked for the seconds If I could play bowlers like that when others couldn't. I am starting to get a little annoyed as I feel I'm going to have to do something huge to get into the 2nd's. Now my aim is to knuckle down and get a good innings for the sunday team.

some more updates:

EAUCC U-17's Vs Ossett U-17's
Bowling:Had an abysmal start yet again with the ball but my last 2 overs where much better. Picked up 1 wicket for 20odd.

Batting: Came in with about 5 overs left and hit a quick fire 10 as we needed about 10 an over at that point. we managed to win with 2 balls to spare.

EAUCC ST Vs Old Sharlston ST

Bat: came in with about 8-9 overs left in a decent position. played a nice cover drive second ball but it went straight to the fielder. Bowler was a complete arse and I hit an aweful 4 with a toe bunged legside hoick. He started bowling a little extra and got me out with a ball that he took a little run up off but bowled quickly lobbed it up for an easy catch. We finnished on 205 from 40 overs.

Ball: Bowled 4-1-0-18. Bowled alright but let it slip. We managed to win by a fair margin with them needing 30 odd to win off the last over which was completed in the pouring rain. Their scorer tried to claim there was one over left but no one was having it. Top of the league with the sundays. Desperately need some runs for them now to push into the 2nd team.

EAUCC U-17's Vs Gomersal U-17's
Ball:Finally managed to get my form back with the ball bowling 4 overs, 1 wicket for 10 runs. I was beating the bat on a large number of occasions. The finnished on 130. We got off to a good start with the opening captain getting 50 for the 2 week on the bounce. Came in at 3 and started hitting the runs quickly finnishing on a quick fire 42 before being bowled, but it was pouring it down again and was getting dark. Didn't see the ball that well but was still a bad shot. got down to needing 3 runs from 2 overs. 2nd to last was under some rather dubious circumstances. There player "slipped" and fell over with their umpire saying something about it being unfit to bowl on. We where having none of it. also gave an appalling run out when our batsmen was easily in. We managed to win with 1 ball to spare.

May be in trouble after this match though. When I got out the ball was behind me so I hit it back to the bowler but it came out hard, which wasn't my intentions. Their umpire had a go saying if I wanted to play by MCC rules that would be 5 penalty runs so I had a go at a slightly lower tone which he was having a go about. He was a complete arse tbh. He gave two no-balls one to me and one to the person who came on at my end after me. My first ball he gave one and called it a no ball. He said something about me being left arm over. I thought nothing of it at the time but when he gave it and we questioned it he said it was because we hadn't told him we where bowling left arm over/ right arm over repsectively. I cannot find a ruling that states this, he should have used some common scence and it was also against the spirit of the game. If he reports me then we can report him for being so biased and using some rather underhand tactics as it seemed.

I'll let you know how I get on from here on out and if I do get reported and any action is taken against me. But all I can say is if he reports me then we can report him. Just to clarify has anyone ever heard of this rule?

I've heard that you need to inform the umpire, but not that it would be a no-ball if you didn't. If you changed ends without informing the umpire, then maybe.

From experience I have always been asked whether or not I was bowling left arm over. Looking at the rules for a no ball it says if you change which side your coming from e.g. start coming around when you where bowling over, and don't tell the umpire then it's a no ball. Doesn't even mention not telling the umpire what you're going to bowl and from which side. It's against the spirit of the game aswell.

According to our chairman they can give a no-ball if you don't tell the umpire what you're bowling. Still at U-17's level it's a little against the spirit of the game and considering almost all umpires ask you what you're going to bowl it's very harsh. He was an absolute prick anyways, as our normal coach(who couldn't make the game) was saying that both him and his son are like that.

Anways our teams overseas player has finally arrived and me and a friend have been talking to him a fair bit. Wilden Cornwall, plays for Leeward Islands in the West Indies. After another net session yesterday he talked to us about what he had seen us do. He told me that with the right guidance I could make it to the top level which is great to hear as that is my main ambition in life. He has offered me and a friend coaching sessions for ?20 which where to start today but it looks like I won't be able to do it today, as i haven't been left any money to pay him and I'm going to have to pick up my younger brothers, unless my mum texts me back and sorts something out. Eitherway anything that could potentially improve my game and also help to take a step towards making it I will do as I would do whatever it takes to achieve my ambition. Hopefully my mum will get one of my other elder siblings to pick them up or just pick them up herself, she's already worked later once this week.

Again Wilden called one of the first team players on wednesday and told him of a left hander who had great talent and who he thought had a lot of potential, aka me. This is doing my confidence a world of good as all I have ever wanted is just for someone to say whether they think I am good enough to play at the highest level. Luckily my dad and grandad are paying for Wilden to give me the coaching sessions as a birthday present. I think I'm buying a new bat off of said first team player. A new slazenger, the grey one for ?60, but if I can sell a Woodworm satelite for more than ?40 I will get that off of it. It's an elite pro. seems alright anybody think it's worth it? Also said first teamer said he will try and get me games with the second team. The future could be looking up for me.:D

Couple more results for ya:

EAUCC ST Vs Darton ST

Was feeling the effects of the night before's drinking session, and could barely run. Then fielding at square leg I dived down for the ball and landed awkwardly.......twice. My elbow was in quite some pain but on the inside not out. I didn't bowl as I didn't want to damage it. Couldn't throw well either tbh it hurt every time I did. When we went off for lunch the pain subsided and felt alright. Went in to bat no.4 after no.3 got a duck. faced out a few only to play on for a duck. Was a slowish bowler and their keeper was stood up. Went to cut it but edged it down and it bounced onto the stumps. Was very annoyed tbh. We lost by about 9 runs in the end.

EAUCC U17's Vs Gildersome U17's
Ball: Didn't bowl well again partially due to the ball being wet. went for 20 odd runs from my 3 overs before being taken off. Fielded like a sack of crap tbh. dropped two and misfielded a few. They got to 103 for 6 I think from their 20.
Bat: 27 no. hitting the winning runs. 3 overs left and we needed 12 to win with just our no.2 out. hit the runs off the first three balls finnishing 3 runs behind the captain in a lot less time. I must have a strike rate of nearly 200 tbh. We're on a bit of a role at the moment which is good as we've got the next round of the cup on tuesday against Mirfield, who are unbeaten so far this year in all competitions.

So got a text on thursday night from 2nd team captain asking me to play saturday aswell as sunday to which I said yes. My first games back for the 2nd team, a year since the last time I played for them.

EAUCC 2ndXI Vs Adwalton 1stXI
We won(i think) the toss and had a bat first. Openers went quickly for few runs. the middle order held it together with a set of cousins, Dave and Tom Chester both scoring 40 and a fellow U-17 scoring 30 I came in with 150+ runs on the board for 6. Only 8 overs left and managed to get a quickfire 23no getting us to a defendable total of 208-7 from 50 overs. We bowled okay to start with but it went down hill from there. We bowled too many balls that had too much width, allowing their batsmen to slog too many balls. With 5-6 overs to go they needed about 10 runs to win with 8 wickets down. Unfortunately we bowled one of them out but the umpire gave a no-ball that was just about on the line tbh. They leveled the scores with 3 to go and Tom Chester managed to bowl a maiden for the bowled that could have got the wicket to be hit for 4 to win them the game. The massive cheer from the sideline suggested they had just won a cup final when they had beaten a 2nd team. Bloody well done.

EAUCC 2ndXI Vs Wakefield Thornes 2ndXI
they won the toss and elected to bat in a 40 overs cup match. Their openers put on a big score until we final managed to get a wicket them having score 150+ for the oppening partnership. they got to 238-5 from their 40 a good total in a 40 over game. We did horrible in reply being bowled all out for 86, me getting a golden duck clean bowled. Will make the league game against them in a couple of weeks all the more interesting.

had a few games since the last so I'll only do a quick recap of them as I can't remember very well.

East Ardsley U-17's Vs Mirfield U-17's-Cup

Batted okay but ended up playing a straight one straight back to the bowler for a caught and bowled for about 5-6. Bowled poor aswell only bowling a handfull of even half decent balls. The inconsistency in my bowling really showing. They managed to win comfortably in the end.

East Ardsley U-17's Vs Hanging Heaton U-17's

Again bowled awful and got hit around then got out for about 7. Once again they won comfortably.

East Ardsley U-17's Vs Hunslet Nelson U-17's
We batted first and did alright getting to 108 from the 20 overs. I however was dismissed for a duck bowled leg stump. Worst of all their coach who was umpring is a coach of one of the league sides and performing well could have gotten me a name mention to the U-17's coach. Anways bowled 2 good overs to start and took a wicket with the first ball of my third. got hit around a bit for the rest of the over and got taken off as per.

East Ardsley 2ndXI Vs Wakefield Thornes 2ndXI

After not playing the week before was picked again for this week, thanks to some persuasion from one of the guys involved with selection(one of about 3-4 people who are actually in my camp). They won the toss again and batted once again. We bowled alot better restraining them to 150-160 odd or something. We did fairly well in the end our no.4 got a 50 and everyone before chipped in a bit. I came in at 5 and they brought the spinners on. Had an absolute nightmare as I struggle against spinners. However I stuck in for a while and stayed there for an important partnership before being bowled for 18. We won with plenty of overs left.

East Ardsley U-17's Vs Adwalton U-17's
We bowled first and I managed to get off to great start bowling a maiden with my first over and the 2nd over of the game. My second wasn't as good going for 11 but I should have had a wicket tbh. Came on and bowled the last over bowling it in a perfect spot giving no runs. Was moving away from the right hander aswell. Gave the big hitting captain a single to get him off strike and bowled the other batsmen with a yorker, the 2nd in 2 weeks. It's seems the leg-stump yorker is my wicket ball. last ball put it in the spot I was but the movement meant they edged it through slips and it went for 4. 3-1-16-1 isn't too bad consider recent weeks. managed to get 25 no as we happily won in the end.

Picked again for this weekend hopefully I can get another good result for the 2ndXI.
