People not rating Virat Kohli in the same category as Root, Williamson and Smith is beyond me.
I will start with the limited overs format where I think Virat Kohli is best in the world. The knock that Smith played yesterday was amazing but people often forget that Virat Kohli has been playing knocks like this since 2012. I wouldn't even put Steve Smith, Joe Root and Kane Williamson in the same category as Virat Kohli when it comes to limited overs format. The only two players who deserves the top category in the limited overs format right now is Kohli and AB and because Kohli is so consistent, I think he is even better than AB.
Now coming to the longer format, If someone told me that Kohli is not in the same category as the other 3 last year, I would have agreed. However, looking at it right now, I think he definitely deserves a place in that category. He didn't have a double century even in first class games before this year and now he has 2 this year. That inning that he played against England in the second inning in Vizag is one of the best inning I have seen recently. It was a pitch where every single batsmen struggled to score runs from both sides and he scored 81 with a strike rate of 74. Again, I am not saying he is the best in the world in the longer format of the game. In fact, he is behind Steve Smith, Joe Root and Kane Williamson in this format but to say he is not even in the same category as them is just silly.
It's also funny when people bring up that England series whenever Virat Kohli's name is mentioned. Somehow failing in one series means you are not a great player. Joe Root averages in 17 in New Zealand and averages 27 in Australia. Williamson averages 21 in South Africa, 30 in England and 35 in India. Steve Smith average 34 in UAE. So, those series are never mentioned when these players are debated. However, as soon as Virat Kohli's name comes up, the first thing people do is bring up that series in England. It's about how you come back from the failure that shows the greatness of the player.
