ive always loved cricket and wanted to take it up 'one day'; ive just always been less than confident in my ability, im certainly never going to be ian botham

at 19 ive played bits of cricket in school and in an abruptly ended after school club; i was certainly not a stand out individual

in hindsight i always thought i should have played with a left hand bat to be more solid in defence; as a right hander i just hit everything down to fine leg:laugh - i also worry because im a shocking fielder; big, slow, cant catch

so now i think im about ready to get out there and play cricket but where do i stand; how good do they want you to be before you join a local club (is that like asking how long is a piece of string)

It's always good when people want to start playing cricket :), Many clubs will have multiple teams meaning the best players will play for the 1sts and the not as good players will play in a much lower team say the 3rd or 4th XI. If you just contact a club tell them your ability and cricket history they should welcome with you open arms.

Cricket at club level ranges from competitive to casual. Do not let lack of confidence in your ability hinder you. Cricket helps build character and most clubs would be happy for you to join. The more cricketers the merrier!

You may not have confidence but you have passion. Thats far more important that confidence. Why you ask? Because you bleed yourself dry with passion. Look at collingwood today? And then look at KP. See the difference between passion and confidence.

Exactly what Karnog said. I was just like you when i started cricket, i wasnt confident within my ability but i had passion as well and decided to have a go. And most likely your teammates will support you all the way, and will give you the confidence to play your best cricket.

i had a dream the other night; ashley giles was bowling at my local (ploughed) field - i asked for some tips and he told me to go find out for myself

randomz, but i didnt want to start a new thread

also thanks for all your encouragement; now its more a matter of a finding a club, my local village club are more an exhibition/charity side whereas there is a more bonafide club in a nearby local suburb; i guess ill have to ring around
