Defensive Shot Flys For Four

Does this happen to anyone? About 90-95% of nicks off my fast bowler go flying for four.

The batsman is clearly defending the ball. Any ideas?

By the way, you guys are so helpful!

It seems to be a massive oversight. Relying on LBWs, bowled, and caught by a fielder to get a wicket is worrying.

In real life, line and length, more often than not, force a nick to the keeper or the slips. Why bother with line and length if it does no good?

I’m lucky I chose a leg-spinner. It is way more fun. Growing up as an Aussie watching Warney rip through the opposition made me love leg-spin forever.

yh i agree ive always loved leg spin and even off spin more than pace bowling.Only difference mate is im british born and grew up watching warney rip threw us!my first ever ashes series was 93 so i got to see him in his prime and will never forget the ball to gatting i think it was.class act and to be fair that was some aussie side.the only thing i struggle a bit with is setting the right fields for spinners.

I find it hard setting the field too. Keeper drops it, or slip drops it, or they cut between the keeper and 3rd slip. And the batsman always finds a way to work it to deep point for a single.

Good old Warnie. My favourite cricketer of all time. Geez, he gave you guys a hard time. He always seemed to be even more brutal in Ashes series.

Our team now is a disgrace. I feel embarrassed as an Aussie to follow our team.

Bring Warnie back!

yeah i also think there remains an issue with outfield catches as the ball always seems to land just short or beyond the nearest fielder.yh i bet you wish warney was still there, would probably still give batsmen nightmares! One thing i will say is having a fielder in place for the bat/pad is very effective

I get knocks quite a bit. Just returned to my test v new Zealand and my two wickets so far were a chip to mid wicket off spin and a nick off a leg cutter to third slip

hi mate yeah im getting nicks and taking closer catches but not much happening further out nearer the boundary.it may not be that much of an issue its just something im noticing right now

You aren't getting catches off nicks out near the boundary ?

im seeing catches taken at point/cover and square leg/midwicket occasionally but it has been a long time since i saw a catch further out than that.yesterday i had an instance where the ball was inches away from the fielder but the catching mini game never showed and i missed the chance.i prefer to play on manual fielding but sometimes infuriates me as does semi but i do switch between the two depending on what time of night im playing etc(lazyness basically haha). If you have any field placement tips bro id be most grateful especially when using spinners

I'm not sure what format you are looking for field placements for spinners but bowling as Ali in my current test; I'm building pressure by bowling arm balls with a field that consists of one slip (usually third), point, cover, deep mid-off, straight on, mid-on, mid-wicket, deep forward square leg and deep backward square leg. I won't take a wicket but I haven't conceded a run in about 4 overs and hopefully the confidence loss for the batsmen will let Anderson strike at the other end. Sorry I can't be of more help for wickets![DOUBLEPOST=1532204102][/DOUBLEPOST]Of course i concede a run with the very next delivery...

And then a wicket Nicholls 48 (105) b Anderson c Broad at cover point

many thanks mate every little helps and yes i was asking for tests mainly so will give those fielding positions a go

For my leggie, I have the following field almost always:

Backward Square Leg
3rd Slip
Gully
Deep Mid Off
Deep Point
Short Mid-Wicket
Deep Mid On
Deep Square Leg
Short Cover

I’ve found that by giving the batsman the opportunity to be aggressive and try to hit over the field, that I more often than not draw an edge. I may go for a few, but I take wickets.

I rarely see any nicks go through 1st or 2nd slip. 3rd Slip seems to be perfect for me. Bowl 4-5 good length leggies at normal speed, then I bowl the last one quicker than the rest.

I have to be very accurate, though, or they’ll take a single off every ball to Deep Point or Deep Square Leg.
