Don Bradman Cricket 17 First Impressions Thread

Enjoying it so far.

Started a test as England v Zimbabwe (selected random opponent) who won the toss and decided to bowl first, I started well with the first wicket going down at 47 but then collapsed to 142 all out, the 2nd wicket was given caught behind, I'd kind of got myself in a mess trying to play a shot so didn't really know what had happened but on the replay it looked like I'd missed the ball so wish I'd reviewed it now, also managed to get a LBW decision overturned where I'd moved across the crease quite a bit, was nowhere near hitting the ball but was 95% certain it was going down leg side, during the review it showed a hotspot replay 4 times even though it was 100% clear I was nowhere near the ball then just cut to the umpire overturning his decision without showing ball tracking which was the only thing that really mattered in this case, so far that's been the only thing that's disappointed me, just a bit immersion breaking.

Struggled at first with bowling then got the breakthrough with Zimbabwe on 37, a nice edge caught in the slips, 2nd wicket was lbw with them on 51 then I started struggling again and looked like the game was going to get away from me before making it 91-3 (I'm English and it's always been runs - wickets for me so deal with it ;) ) was a bit of a lucky wicket, a poor ball that was slightly wide of leg hit the batsman on the inside of his thigh before hitting the stumps.

I'm not sure if it's finally clicked with me yet or if it's down to the middle order not being great, but I've now got them 139-7 and have just bowled a double wicket maiden so am into the tail (their number 4 is still there though on 43).

The pacing seems good (apart from the number of wickets that have gone down, still about 2 hours left on day one) this is my first match so I've not played any limited over games, England got their 142 from 35.5 overs and Zimbabwe are currently going at 4.02 an over which I'm happy with, can be a bit immersion breaking when teams are going at 10+ an over in test matches.

I've not had chance to sort any teams out yet as I couldn't be bothered waiting for the update to download so set it going in the background while I was playing so that'll be the next thing I do once this test is over.

The realism in these games just gets more and more incredible. :lol

:lol Think it's more down to my bad reactions, I'm getting a bit too old for this now.

I'm blaming the left handers anyway, now I've learnt the mechanics I'm fine with right handed batsmen facing right handed bowlers, just get in a right mess with left handers, also a bit heavy handed so was pushing L3 in a lot when trying to sort my feet out which was causing the batman to leave the ball and get out LBW, switched leave to X so not getting that problem anymore.

Great game so far :).
Dont know why people are complaining about Graphics because they are better then DBC14.
I haven't touched Career mode yet because Cricket Academy is not working so I can't replace all the teams :(.

Have to wait till Christmas day to even install it...

Hopefully though all the teams will be there ready to play with by the time that Christmas rolls around

You can go for a women's career mode till everything gets updated!

Okay so I've done a little playing around with the academy and stadium creator and played a nice 20 20 between Australia and England at Cardiff. Overall I'm definitely happy with the game. Here is a list of likes/loves, suggested improvements and bugs.

Likes/loves

- The game looks great. Anyone worried about the graphics shouldn't. Sure, you are at the mercy of the creators of the faces but generally they are very good and the lighting is lovely
- When you play in a stadium that has been made well, like Swalec Stadium, Cardiff, it is just a joy. I've actually been to that stadium so it's lovely to see it recreated
- Fielding is a lot smoother
- Added statistics are nice
- Much easier to move fielders in the field menu (but not select them)
- Nice that there are now home and away crowds that react and are coloured accordingly
- Amazing that I could just download the Australian team and there they are all kitted out with proper bats and everything. Too easy!
- Got some nice nicks when bowling, felt on top, but then the AI took the game away from me. Really felt a difference bowling to a confident Hales, who knotched up about 90 off 60, than an earlier struggling Root who plodded to 15 off 25
- Minimised bowling hud is much nicer
- Love the mini menu to make small adjustments to the field
- Fast reflex catching is great fun
- Seems to be a greater range of shot placement.
- Precision shot for quick singles is lovely (unfortunately the AI batting doesn't really use it, see below)
- Tap backs when fielding are great and often necessary!
- Much to my joy, the swing is a lot more realistic now and decreases as the ball gets older. No more remote control swing!

Suggested improvements

- AI batting is overly cautious when running. Barely any 2s, largely singles and fours and sixes. I found, on the other hand that if you hit and run at a fielder you were generally safe. I will add the caveat that this was 20 20 with tiny boundaries but I definitely ran a lot more 2s and 3s...even one 4 than the CPU did.
- Found a super fieldsman I believe. Moeen Ali bowling off spin took three wickets with a gully that caught everything, including a middled, perfectly timed cutshot that he dived for. From memory we had a super fieldsman at short cover in DBC14 and also the bowler
- Related to this, the diving of both the fieldsmen and batsmen is a bit too superman for my liking
- As mentioned before, I think the field editor needs work. It's easy to move players but not to select them. Also there are so many (147 to be precise) preset fields that it's very hard to go through them.
- The little mini menu where you can move the fielders has options from very attacking to very defensive but none of them have more than 2 fielders outside the infield so for limited overs cricket they are pretty much useless outside the powerplay.
- Some slightly unrealistic 162 km/h effort balls with default sliders :D
- This MAY already be in the game, but can you have adboards that aren't rotating?
- Some definite lag when batting in the Close Batsman camera. I'm on an original (non pro) PS4. Luckily I normally use Far Batsman but I wanted to test it out and to be honest it was unplayable as you need split second reflexes and just a tiny lag kills you.
- Lots of shots have batsmen backing away.
- I think the run rate and required run rate would be nice to have pop up in the UI from time to time. I actually needed to search a bit to find them.

Bugs

- I'll call this a bug. In the 20 20 game England never set a field with more than two guys in the outfield, even when I looked like I was chasing down their total comfortably and Finchy was knocking them around the park. Maybe this is related to the mini menu only showing fields with two outfielders max?
- Had three crashes on the PS4 on the stadium editor so I gave up

This sounds good - probably need to have someone try this in a Test, but do the AI captains use their different types of bowlers at different times in the innings accordingly? Even a quick simulate would probably show it. I'd noticed that the ball was swinging and seaming a lot more nicely in the demo anyway. Looking forward to playing it. Hope some of these minor criticisms can get ironed out before January.

have they sorted out the simulation part yet? ie. in DB14, if you sim the other team's innings, the bottom 3 will usually score 100's.

Follow Langeveldt's Fantasy League thread, he's doing AI vs AI matches (assuming simulation works the same way). :)

Search using Casper for England and Aus, Fissionmailed for BBL, SA and NZ. The highest rated ones are the right teams. For Zimbabwe, search Friedlele7. Although the names do not show up, you can still search.
Anyone knows who has the best India team?
