I've been having trouble with my DVD drive for some time now, but have now pretty definitively worked out that while it plays DVDs fine, and writes to any medium, it will not read CDs. Windows just tells me that the drive is empty. Is this a software issue, or is the drive dead? Any assistance at all please? Laptop is an HP dv6000 and drive is a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-851S.

Cheers. :)

some time this happens to me, maybe the Drive is dirty or bad CD.
DVD Drive dirty.
I once had a Dvd Drive and i can play movies, etc.
but when it come to Burn cd and sometime burn Dvd, it doesn't read and just say it's blank.
When I change the DVD drive it started working.

than I also had some Cd/Dvd i burn data on, and when i put it in any Drive it doesn't work, mean the CD/DVD is faulty.

Well i have over 5 pc that i can try my CD/DVD.
maybe if you try it in some else drive and if it works it would be your Cd/DVd drive problem.

I personally don't think it have anything to Do with Vista and XP, maybe i can be wrong.

But according to my experience this maybe the Problem which i wrote above.

Even i have the same problem sometimes my drive doesnt read my DVD's which i read in the past.
I dont know why and yesterday the drive tray refused to come out for long, so i got irritated and just banged it and ITS working perfectly now!!:clap:cheers

Cheers for all the help. westindies2007, it looks like the drive is indeed dead, but I was unsure because it reads DVDs fine. Might try a system restore at some point anyway because my laptop is starting to slow down a bit now and if that works - great.

I had the same problem, and i think it was the same drive. I was able to read DVD's without a problem, but CD's just couldn't be read. There were regular problems while writing as well.

Since my laptop was under warranty, i got it replaced. I think it was a dead drive more than anything else.

Almost certainly you need a new drive, it certainly wont be software. Might be worth running a drive cleaner cd in it. Even though its a laptop it should be possible to replace the drive quite easily.

Cleaning might help read a few CD's, but, most probably it is a weak lens, and will cause problems in the future as well.
