No. But the net total spending after signing the replacement shouldn't surpass 90 crores mark.

Eg. Let's assume Gujarat have spent entire 90 crores in the auction.

Scenario 1: Jason Roy needs to be replaced and his base price was 2 crores. Here the franchise can sign any other player with no restrictions since the spending budget won't exceed the maximum limit of 90 crores.

Scenario 2: If Jason Roy's base price was 75 lakhs and had Gujarat hypothetically bought him for 1 crore at the auction. Then when a replacement player needs to have a base price of 1 crore or below. If they sign a 2 cr base price replacement instead then they exceed the 90 crore spending budget.

Having Steve Smith as the replacement might be a smart choice. He'd bring some stability to a middle order that's lacking a reliable accumulator and as a captaincy asset. Also allows Wade to open, who gets quick runs in the powerplay.

To be brutally honest, Eoin Morgan doesn't deserve an IPL contract. He hasn't done well ever in the history of IPL even after 7 years of experience. So how can we expect him to play?

I remember me as an Indian fan being absolutely worried every time he played against us but the fact is, the same form was never really carried into the IPL.

His record in Asia, in T20is and IPL, isn't great.

But overall, he's batted 4 (which is regarded to be the most difficult position to bat in T20s) more than any other player in internationals only Maxwell has a better strike rate in that position. Only Maxwell scores boundaries as often and only Maxwell and Yuvraj who scores sixes more often. (20+ innings v test playing nations)

His strike rate does drop off more than any others in Asia apart from Samuels.

He doesn't bat four much anymore, but even at 5 there's only Nabi, Pollard, Buttler that scores boundaries more often and Miller and Duminy with better strike rates. I imagine Nabi has done that a lot against weaker sides (Ireland).

I'm glad we've turned this thread into the Eoin Morgan thread. :D

The fact is that the owners hardly give a damn about the statistics part when they bid on a player. The first thing they look at is the requirement of the team and that should go in sync with what the team motto, their culture, their vision and their approach is. Then they look at the impact the player can have in the role that they require to be filled. Finally they look at the IPL numbers, only then they pick a player. The fact is majority of times, the franchise does have a player who does the job as effectively as Morgan can do and infact they've done it better as far as IPL is concerned. India doesn't have any shortage of stock as far as the batters are concerned. So this saves them an Overseas spot plus they are better insured about the performance part. Eoin Morgan has an average of 22 & a SR of 122 in IPL while he manages to hit a six every 18th delivery he faces. He scores a boundary once in every 7th delivery. He has only 5 scores in excess of 50 in the 83 matches he played. I am sorry but these numbers are below par for an International quality player.

Scores of 50 don't matter when you bat in the middle order.

There were also a dozen of other things I mentioned in my post than just talking about 50+ scores. When you could get a local player who can do the same thing then why would you use up a spot for an Overseas player? The fact still prevails that he has under performed.

Look I didn't say at all that he should be retained or picked up again. I was merely pointing out that he has a compelling and perhaps underrated T20i record. I acknowledged he's been poor overall in the IPL.

I think KKR have got, in Shreyas, a great replacement as captain and middle order batter and there are probably better options for Gujarat too. Although, I'd pick Morgan over some of them batting options.

Aaron Finch looks more likely to be replacing Jason Roy. He looks to be the only player who can be as destructive as someone like Jason Roy is.

Fun-fact: Gujarat Lions is the only team to have retained Aaron Finch in IPL

Finch has been the part for the following teams

Kochi Tuskers Kerala- 2011
Delhi Daredevils- 2012
Pune Warriors India- 2013
Sunrisers Hyderabad- 2014
Mumbai Indians- 2015
Gujarat Lions- 2016 & 2017
Kings XI Punjab- 2018
Royal Challengers Bangalore- 2020

He opted out in 2019 IPL due to the upcoming World Cup while he went unsold in 2021.

I'd like to see them pick Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Can double up as a keeper and is an attacking option at the top as well.
I don't think they would prefer to go for such a wild pick. I mean I really like the way he plays but he hasn't played much against top ranked sides and neither he has played much in the T20 leagues around the world.
