Hayden dropped from one-day squads

Matthew Hayden is clinging to his international career after being told he is not in Australia's limited-overs plans. Hayden, who had an awful Test summer of 149 runs at 16.55, was omitted as the selectors looked to players who could be part of the World Twenty20 in England in June and the 2011 World Cup

A step in the right direction?

I was expecting this, Hayden once told that he may retire from limited overs to prolong his test carrer. Its a good move considering his form atm. I would like to see Warner or Hughes get the place. Most likely it will be Warner :)

Hard to make what this means for his test career, bit harsh since the forms of games are different but if anything the ODI is where we do need to start looking to the WC. Also this could be the selectors giving Hayden time to find form in FC.

Wasn't too shocked to see this coming. Has been in some dreadful form of late. Too bad he didn't go on with his knock yesterday, he was looking pretty good. Well this might be a good thing for him though, gets him back to NSW and play some test matches with them, see if he can regain some form.

There really is no downside to this move. The only one I can think of is that it might make the crowds smaller, but when you start picking a squad based on that you're on a slippery slope.

The guy is 37, he is batting poorly and doesn't offer too much in the field now. He won't be playing in the next world cup - all he would be doing in stopping a younger guy from getting a spot. You can argue it would have been a good place to try and get him some form ahead of South Africa and the Ashes, but so is playing for Queensland. Sounds harsh I guess, the guy's been a great player, but everyone has to go sometime.

This would have been an even easier choice if Watson had been fit, as he and Shaun Marsh look like a good opening pair for the future. I guess they'll promote Hopes in the meantime, since he looks all at sea against spin - make sure he's making the quicks.

Im Shattered, but the selecters excuse makes sense. Go Marsh.

Do You think Hayden will be playing in the Big Bash over the coming weeks?

If Australia fails, he will probably be back. He made a comeback already a couple of times.

Coz Im going to the WA Vs Queensland 20/20 game next week. I would love to see my greatest ever hero there.

Firstly, I didn't realise Matthew Hayden played for NSW. I also didn't realise that NSW played Test matches. Although there has been an argument that playing for NSW results in playing Test matches, but I tend to think that is a bit of an exaggeration.

If he stays in the Test squad I would be puzzled. Wouldn't you drop him from tests and put in the solid Jaques and keep playing Hayden in One Dayers where he can hit out or get out?

Feelin Blue? added 0 Minutes and 54 Seconds later...

I tend to use the argument that the NSW team could play in Tests, and win :)

He gets dropped from the ODI's after being awarded ODI cricketer of the year at the Allan Border last year. He hasn't played a ODI since he recieved the award either. Better yet, he would've won the Allan Border medal last year if it wasn't for the media's love affair with Brett Lee.

Looks like the end for one of the finest cricketers that Australia has ever produced. :(

I think if Hayden would of been picked he would have performed very well. ODI is very different to tests, I think this is a mistake.

Yeah, I also recognised that irony, but I think it probably shows that the selectors are keen on retaining him in Tests. They don't want him to have a swansong in the ODI series, they want him to go play for Queensland, get his first class game in order. In hindsight, it probably wouldn't have hurt if he had done this instead of going to India, after such a long injury lay off.

I think it's because of all the hype in the media and the pressure that's on the selectors after South Africa walked all over Australia. Opens up new a light, but darkens on a great player.
