Yeah.I too noticed it being played when the crowd was silent.We have it in New Zealand too, but it's used mostly in Rugby and League games. They basically blow it in rugby when the home crowd has gone real quite, and use it to get the crowd to start cheering and thus hopefully inspiring the home team. In the Waikato games over here we have people ringing cowbells.
It was used all the time in the football World Cup in Switzerland
