Can any South African fan explain the history of the hooter (horn) that goes off in games?

Yeah I too was very curious to know about that.Whenever its been played, the crowd's volume goes up.

We have it in New Zealand too, but it's used mostly in Rugby and League games. They basically blow it in rugby when the home crowd has gone real quite, and use it to get the crowd to start cheering and thus hopefully inspiring the home team. In the Waikato games over here we have people ringing cowbells.
Yeah.I too noticed it being played when the crowd was silent.
It really seems to cheer up the crowds.

I hate it. Not sure how it got started though. I don't remember it being at the local pro 20 games.

As far as I know it got to South Africa after the Rugby World cup in France. They played it often during the rugby world cup which South Africa won and since then it's been used to liven up crowds. It's a tune on the French Horn by the way.

Well from what I know in the super 14 the stadium horn indicates when the time is up..So at the end of the half and at the end of the game.. Maybe thats how it comes into the T20?

Yesterday's match showed danny morrison talking to the DJ who plays the music during 4s/6s

The same DJ also plays the horn. But its not actually a horn. Its a pre-recording which is played when he presses some button.

where can i get this sound? i would like to put it as a ringtone for my phone?

Oh I hate that sound. Initially they were playing it once or twice during the match to keep the suprise factor. Now it seems to be playing every alternate over. As if the IPL officials want to keep the noise going even if the half the stadium is empty.
