PEPSI CRICKET SHOW---CHAMPIONS TROPHY PREVIEW SHOW
Harsha Bhogle: Welcome to a special edition of the `PEPSI Cricket Show` on STAR SPORTS . The ICC Champions Trophy 2006 is all set to gt underway and teams are in India ready practicing. There are no warm up games and one mistake could cost the sides a place in the semis .
With me are 2 guests Ravi Shastri and David Gower.
Ravi, a very important tournament , is`nt it.
Will the huddle work this time ???
Ravi: A real big event . First real big tournament after 1996 to be held in India. Th timing of the event is crucial . Just 6 months prior to the World Cup in the Carribean , teams will be looking to get the phsychological boost over their oponents .
The pitches in India are very similar to the ones in the West Indies. So, it`ll be a good dress rehearsal. David; This is the only chance for cricket lovers to see all the teams in action together before the world cup. In a sense it is tougher than the world cup since there are no minnows involved and one defeat---you are out.
THE CUP BEFORE THE BIG CUP
Harsha : Your favorites for the tournament Ravi .
Ravi : All the 3 Asian nations will be hard to beat since they`ll all be playing the league games at home.
Australia will be looking to win the event for the first time but beating Sri Lanka at Kandy will be tough, even for the Champs.
I feel, we`ll have an India-Pakistan final.
CAN THEY WIN IT FOR THE FIRST TIME ?
David: I would expect all the 3 subcontinental nations to go through to the semis but Sri Lanka have to beat Australia for that . India and Pakistan have an easier draw of beating the Englishmen and the West Indians.
I don`t expect England to go too far. They are a side who are a bit confused in ODI cricket. West Indies are my dark horses.
They looked good recently against India.
Harsha : We`ll wait and see . It`ll be a fascinating tournament .
Join us for the first match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2006 which is India V England live from Kolkata .
To remind you of the Schedule , we`ll have `Taking Guard` show before the start of the match and `Follow Through` after the game .
TAKING GUARD : Game 1 ; INDIA V ENGLAND , LIVE FROM EDEN GARDENS
Harsha Bhogle : Hello and welcome to the live and exclusive coverage of the ICC Champions Trophy 2006. It is game 1 and it features the hosts, India and a team who look very confused in ODI cricket, England.
It`ll be an uphill task for the Englishmen. They came to India early this year and were thrashed 5-1 in ODIs. But, they now have their full team back and would like to avenge that defeat.
With me are Geoff Boycott and Sunil Gavaskar.
Sunil Gavaskar:India are clearly the favorites for this game. Playing at home is a huge advantage and England at the moment are struggling in ODI cricket.
They do have Harmisson,Anderson,Trescothik and Flintoff back, which will be a huge boost for them.
Kolkata crowd will test them. It`ll be noisy and this being a day nighter , they`d like to bowl first as the dew factor will come into play in the evening.
Geoff Boycott : I agree with Sunny there. India are right up there with the best in ODIs and it`ll be difficult to beat them at home. Having said that, they just lost a series against the Windies ! But they are playing some good ODI cricket. England , on the othe hand have never really settled as a ODI unit due to injuries and as a result have lost 18 out of 21 ODIs which is horrible. My money is firmly on India.
Harsha :Let us now join Ravi Shastri with the Pitch and Weather report.
WEATHER AND PITCH REPORT ---- RAVI SHASTRI
The pitch looks an absolute beauty . It is nice and firm. The ball will come on at a good pace. The pitch will slow down as the game progresses and help th spinners but the dew factor will make the team winning the toss bowl first.
The weather is tyically Indian , hot and sunny . The maximum of around 35 degrees and no chances of rain.
TOSS --------->> Ian Chappel : With me are the 2 captains, Andrew Flintoff and Rahul Dravid. It is Rahul to call .
Heads is the call.
It is tails. Andrew, you`ve won the toss. What have you decided to do ? Flintoff : Looks a good flat pitch. Should do a little at the start and play well for 100 overs . Ian : and your team. Flintoff : We are playing our full team today. Stevie is back and so are Jimmie Anderson and KP.
Ian : Good luck.
Rahul, batting first . Would you have done the same had you won the toss Rahul : We`d have liked to chase but the wicket should remain the same for the 100 overs. The ball does traditionally do a bit in the evening at the Eden. Ian : Your team. Rahul: One big change, Sachin is back . Zaheer is back as well after a good county season.
Their experience will help us.
Ian : Rahul, good luck.
That is the news from the centre. Andrew Flintoff won the toss and has decided to field.
Update : Virendar Sehwag was bowled for 5 by James Anderson. He just struck a boundary of a majestic coverdrive but was cleaned up on the next ball. Anderson also got Sehwag thrice in the ODI series played in India earlier this year.
Irfan Pathan is the new man in , joining Sachin Tendulkar.
England struck back brilliantly through Steve Harmisson after a good 52 run partnership between Irfan Pathan and Sachin Tendulkar who looked solid at the crease . Tendulkar was unlucky to be given out LBW by umpire Bucknor. The ball was missing all the 3 stumps.
Rahul Dravid was the next to go playing a very un-Dravid like stroke and was caught by Flintoff for 5.
THE MASTER WAS LOOKING GOOD TILL HE WAS THERE
IRFAN IS PLAYING A VITAL KNOCK
Irfan Pathan and Yuvraj have batted sensibly from that time to add 20 more runs since Dravid`s loss. Pathan is unbeaten on 42 from 45 balls.
ENGLAND need one wicket at this stage to get on top and Flintoff is urging his boys for that.
I see Pathan hitting a big score, maybe even a century. On the other hand, Harmison is looking very dangerous - so I see a fierce competition between Pathan and Harmison cheese erupting volcanically.
India fight back through Pathan and Yuvraj`s unbeaten Partnership
Yuvraj Singh and Irfan Pathan have brought India back on top in this quarterfinals after India lost Dravid,Tendulkar and Sehwag early.
The duo nudged the ball around for singles and twos and still accumalated runs at a fair clip.
India still have Dhoni,Kaif and Raina to follow.
YUVRAJ AGAIN SHOWS HIS LIKING FOR THE ENGLISH ATTACK
Yuvraj was sensible ,defending when needed and attacking the bad balls.
He has played vital knocks in his career against England and is doing th same, here.
IRFAN CONTINUED THE GOOD WORK : 74*
ENGLISH BOWLING LOOKED SHORT OF DEPTH
Steve Harmisson who has been the pick of the England bowlers so far has bowled out his quota of 10 overs.
The Indians played out Harmisson without him causing any further damage
Flintoff is yet to bowl, sources say that he won`t be bowling due to his injury worries.
INDIA WILL BE AIMING AT 280-300 With Dhoni,Raina and Kaif to follow and these two at the crease , India will be looking to score big in the last 20 overs and give England a huge target.
Irfan Pathan has the chance to get a big hundred for his team but can he get there or will he perish in quest of acceleration.
